The Red Feather: A Christian Native American Historical Novel (Beneath the Blackberry Moon Book 1) Kindle Edition
Amidst the clash of weapons, two lives intertwine in a battle for love, faith, and survival.
On the American frontier of 1813, Adela McGirth understands the land her father claimed really belongs to the Creeks, so it comes as no surprise when their warriors storm the region to take it back. Their unrelenting attack ends in flames and plunges her into captivity. As Adela adjusts to life in the village, her determination to escape and save her ailing mother remains unwavering, as does her faith in Christ.
Creek warrior Totka Hadjo, eager to prove his worth, finds himself torn between his people's expectations and the emotions Adela awakens within him. Drawn to her against all reason, he begins questioning the beliefs that have guided his life until now. As danger looms in the form of soldiers hot on his trail, he faces a heart-rending decision. Should he hold fast to love, or let free her in the hope she'll return to him?
Alert from the author: I don't prefer prescriptive romance, so I don't write it. The Red Feather contains strong romantic elements but is not a romance in the genre's traditional sense. The characters' love story continues into books 2 and 3 of the series.
The Red Featheris part one of the addictive Beneath the Blackberry Moon trilogy of Christian women’s historical fiction. It delves into the depths of courage, compassion, and the unyielding power of faith. If you like sweeping sagas, strong women of faith, and romantic overtones, then you’ll adore April W Gardner’s moving 3-book journey of heart and spirit.

From the Author
Chock full of history and romance, the Beneath the Blackberry Moon is an enthralling Christian historical fiction series that has earned rave reviews from readers who enjoyed books like The Wood's Edge by Lori Benton and The Frontiersman's Daughter by Laura Frantz. And movies such as The Last of the Mohicans and Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves. This series will appeal to readers who enjoy deep and meaningful spiritual messages, enemies-to-lovers stories, Native American history and culture, interracial relationships, and Christ-centered plots.
Please note this book contains intense battle scenes that might not be appropriate for young teens.
Also note that this is a 3-part story and must be read together.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2016THIS IS THE BOOK I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!! I may be a little biased. I have loved historical fiction which featured Native Americans as main characters since I was a little girl and ever since then I have sought after a book where the hero was a full blooded Indian and in which the heroine left her culture to live with him while still retaining her faith in Christ. I always told myself that there had to be a book like this out there and when I realized that this was that book, I was hooked from the start.
But even putting aside my bias, this is a really good novel. Totka, though not yet a Christian, is an amazing hero who does whatever he can to care for his family and the woman he loves. Adela is nearly his equal as a heroine, as she is fierce in her protection of her family and firm in her faith in Christ even if it might cost her Totka.
There were moments when the text could have been clearer. Often, Adela would refer to "him" and it would be unclear whether she meant Totka or Nokose or even someone else for a few more sentences. Oddly though, this made the story seem more authentic to the time period so I did not mind it overly much.
I highly recommend it to those who love Historical fiction, especially who love stories with Native Americans.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2016I'll be reviewing Part 1 and Part 2 since I read them both, as the story does not end in part 1.
PART 1- Reads more of a love story (which is the genre I was looking for). If you are an avid romance reader, you will Iike this book because it focuses on the 2 main characters and their courtship and romance. It is very sweet, addicting, will keep you reading!! Their love is one of those loves that you gush over, but has its angst and problems to work though as well. This book does touch on Native American history, which I actually thought was very interesting and informative and gave me appreciation for the original inhabiters of our land. It wasnt too long-winded and didnt feel like solely a historical novel....Having said that....
In PART 2, it definitely read more as a historical novel. It was not near as good as the first book! All I wanted was to find out "what happens with Totka & Adela??"(the 2 main characters) But they are only together a couple of times in Part 2, which irked me to no end! I found myself skimming through alot of the book, just searching for when they'd meet up again! I wanted THEIR story to continue! i didnt want to delve into other relationships! This book focuses more on Totka's past(specifically with an old love), and Native American history- which I did find interesting and informative, but again I just skimmed through alot of it because I am just interested in the love story! I will say, that I was happy that it wrapped up Totka and Adelas story enough to have me satisfied. I was worried I would have to wade through yet another long-winded historical novel to have their story concluded!! I did NOT want to do that! So I will say I'm atleast satisfied enough to end it at Part 2. Was it the most romantic ending ever? No- because I dont think the author intended this to be the final conclusion of their story but having read reviews of PART 3, it sounds like theirs is just a background story in that book, so I was hoping things would wrap up in part 2, and glad they did.. enough.
So, in short, if you love historical novels, you will love this series. If you love the romance and love story- you may find yourself starting to get frustrated with how slowly the love story progresses in Part 2. SO overall, PART 1 I give 5 stars, PART 2, I give 3 stars, making an average of 4 stars for the 2 part story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2023Totka and Adela? Can they...mostly she, be able to stop hating, enough to see what her true feelings are? Only time will tell.
One thing that you did get wrong however is: The Creator is not Jesus. True he was a Co-Creator.
His Father, Jehovah is the Creator! Jesus always said he could do nothing of his own initiative but to do what his Father asked.
I hate what the white people did to all Indians! It is greed that drove them to do their best to enialate the Indians.
They should have learned to live with the Indians, they should have learned how to care for the earth.
But No, they wanted everything, so they took and took until nothing was left for the Indians who were there hundreds of years before the whites became greedy. They even try destroying any race except the white.
God is not partial so why is man? I am married 48 years to a Cherokee Indian, not full blood but I wish he were.
I'm looking forward to book 2, I am hoping that Adela realizes her love for Totka and agrees to becoming his wife.
Have tissues with you because you will need them if you have a heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2023It is impossible to be untouched by this author's writing. Every thought is believable. Every interaction is intense. The scenes are graphic. Even inanimate objects have life and emotion.
This book is not for the feignt of heart: The characters are stoic yet sensitive. Conflict is heartfelt and spiritually imperative.
It was hard to live tangible life while immersed in this novel. I am hesitant to dive in again right away, but the beauty and possibilities pull at me.
Thanking you in advance for the entire journey!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2023How can I put into words my review? This book was so well written. The love story, while not without angst and also left unfinished, was beautiful. This was my first time reading this author, and I was enthralled to say the least. This book left me with the same feeling of satisfaction I got from reading the Blue Amaryllis by Sonia De Leon. Both of these books have moved to the top of my favorites list. Thank you, Mrs. Gardner for a lovely story. God has given you a wonderful gift. Thank you for sharing it with others!
