He was late.
Paladin Balen cursed under his breath. The conspicuous lack of music made his stomach twist. King Zavrius should have been playing that damned lute-harp by now. Running in full armor through a forest at night, Balen would be lucky if he didn’t catch his foot on a root, fall, and break his neck. That would be his luck, dying, stupidly, just before he claimed the most prestigious role in Cres Stros. He needed to focus on the uneven path before him. But how could he?
King Zavrius, and everyone else, was waiting.
Balen’s foot slipped in the mulch. He staggered forward in the dark, only righting himself by some miracle. He resolved to push the king from his mind. Always easier in theory. He failed.
Focus. You show up smeared in mud, and Zavrius will be offended.
And Zavrius knew how to hold a grudge.

I adored the world building, the way their magic worked. The mysterious, ancient creatures and their harvested arcana was a haunting, mystical backdrop to a story filled with danger and magic. The characters were well-known and expressed, and I adored our struggling protagonist.
The love story? Absolutely choice. Their interactions, the building up, and that heady bit of spice has me swooning for them. It was a well-done miasma of yearning vs duty, passion and restraint. And my favorite part of it was that the misunderstanding wasn't some ridiculous nonsense, you know? This wasn't the forbidden love of 'woe is me, he'll never love me, blah blah.' This miscommunication was secrets and a past they had to overcome. I think that it gave Balen and Zavrius a lot of depth, made me connect to their story much deeper.
(And I just lived Lance and Mallet SO much. I want to have them as friends in real life, not gonna lie.)
A really lovely read, truly adored it, definitely recommend!!

I read the second book in this series first, but enjoyed this one every bit as much. Haddon is a creative world builder and writes characters who draw you in quickly and keep you reading.
The ONLY reason I have this as four stars is that the editing still needs some work. A few inconsistencies pulled me out of the story. That said, I'm following this author's work and am looking forward to his next publications.
For the negatives – Zavrius is obviously a ridiculous name, which made it a little hard to believe in him as a person. The names (& other made up words) in general are sort of a vague video game fantasy mishmash, which I found to be a barrier to immersion, since I was always aware of the author trying to invent names behind the scenes. My other main complaint was that Balen didn't really seem to understand what his job entailed – if he's been training for this all his life, he should have a better understanding of what the core job duties are and how he fits into the military hierarchy. He starts off seeming implausibly incompetent, and then suddenly gets a lot better when the plot needs him to win.
On the whole, however, I did enjoy the book. The little bits of world building are pretty interesting, I would like to know more about the empire and the gedrok. The characters all had pretty distinct personalities and the dialogue was pretty good. I think the romance is quite successful. The main characters are exes, and I thought the author did a good job of showing that even at the beginning, when they aren't getting along, they both still have feelings for each other. Some parts of the plot felt very standard and expected, but there was also a surprise or two that I didn't see coming.
All in all, I enjoyed the book. I think if i could give half stars I might give it 3.5.
Overall this book focuses heavily on court politics which is handled very well. I enjoyed trying to figure out what was happening alongside the MC. There is definitely romance, but it is not at the forefront all of the time, and you will be shouting at the MC's to TALK TO EACHOTHER. Overall the "steam" level is lower like a 3 out of 5. The main focus is on the world, how the characters interact, and what their ultimate goals are.
Shoutout to Lance & Mallet- anytime they appeared I was cracking up- they were a much needed comic relief!

I loved the story and it leaves me wanting for more, even though it didn't keep me at the edge of my seat from start till end, it's storyline is worked out thoroughly and entertaining. Very wholesome.
Seth Haddons Schreib- und Erzählstil haben mich für ihn eingenommen und ich werde die Augen offen halten für kommende Neuerscheinungen.
