- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2015Not only is the story a good one, but Shirley Hughes' wonderful drawings are the star. My preschool granddaughters picked up on the wonderfu thing she does in her heavily people-populated pages - she places important characters in the background so that you can trace their movements to the climax of the story. You might not realize it the first time through - I didn't - but my five year old granddaughter did. "She's on another page," and so she was. there's a whole bunch to look at and though the book is a classic, it looks really fresh.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2024Dave & his sister are way nicer than me. I would've handled that girl to get digger back differently. And don't get me started on the old lady!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2018This is absolutely my favorite children's book. I never forgot when the librarian in 2nd grade read it to us, and afterwards in my heart my favorite book was "David and Dog." Now that I'm a mom, obtaining this book has been top priority, so when Amazon offered it I was thrilled! I wondered what the difference between the original UK version and the US version would be, but since it was the original text I thought that was cool enough to go ahead and purchase it. Though I *love* reading this version to my kids, and they ask for it specifically, I do wish : 1. That I had the US version. There are several places where I just have to replace the word; it gets cumbersome reading the unfamiliar terminology. (eg, "pushchair" for "stroller" is ok, but I have to put in "flashlight" for "torch"). 2. This would be offered in hardcover. With the use it is getting, softcover is easier to wrinkle and easier to just lose on the bookshelf. GET THIS BOOK; but please offer David and Dog too!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2015Lovely illustrations, but it's the story that truly makes the book outstanding. Ms. Hughes takes a common misfortune - a child losing a cherished toy - and turns it into an exceptional story of family love. I found this book at a library years ago and read it to my children. I couldn't forget this wonderful little book and sought out a copy to own. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2015Dogger is a sweet tale about a little boys's love and attachment to a beloved stuffed dog. He loses Dogger then finds him in an unusual setting. It looks like he'll lose Dogger again but his big sister saves the day. It truly is a lovely story about a young boys's affection towards a stuffed animal and his sister who sacrifices something of her own to help her brother. My children loved this story when they were young. It's the perfect gift for 4-6 year olds.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2021My daughter, now a new mom, loved this book. Her little sister had a special toy, Fozzie Bear, that she loved. My older daughter had her seal and bear that she loved. I bought it for her young son. It is a classic and Shirley Hughes is such a talented artist. All of her books are recommended by Children's Librarians for artwork for childen.
