A Seed Is Sleepy (Nature Books) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 1,415 ratings

Award-winning artist Sylvia Long and author Dianna Hutts Aston have teamed up again to create this gorgeous and informative introduction to seeds. Poetic in voice and elegant in design, the book introduces children to a fascinating array of seed and plant facts, making it a guide that is equally at home being read on a parent's lap as in a classroom reading circle. Plus, this is the fixed format version, which looks almost identical to the print edition.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 1-4–Another contemplative look at the natural world from the pair who created An Egg Is Quiet (Chronicle, 2006). This introduction to seeds and plants uses simple sentences that will stretch children's minds and imaginations. Each spread is devoted to the seed's many attributes, including adventurous, inventive, generous, ancient, and clever. The text then builds on these descriptors with interesting facts: It knows to seek the sunlight.... The author does not shy away from words that children may be unfamiliar with; rather, she constructs sentences that define these words in terms that children can understand: Not all seeds are eager to germinate. Some have lain dormant, or slept undisturbed, for more than a thousand years. Long's ink-and-watercolor sketches, full of rich color and intricate detail, merit high praise. Readers not yet familiar with cursive writing may experience some difficulty deciphering portions of the text independently, but this book is a wonderful addition to units that focus not only on seeds and plants, but also on writing and the language arts.–Maura Bresnahan, High Plain Elementary School, Andover, MA

From Booklist

In this follow-up to An Egg Is Quiet (2006), the creators offer another beautifully illustrated introduction to an aspect of the natural world. This time, the topic is seeds, and once again, Long's masterful watercolors dominate each spread, which includes text on two levels. Short poetic phrases in large print, aimed at younger children, give seeds accessible, anthropomorphic qualities: "A seed is sleepy"; "A seed is adventurous." Paragraphs in smaller print, which tackle science concepts and expand on the phrases, are geared to older readers. The format, with little space devoted to text, doesn't always allow for thorough explanations, and kids will need help with many facts and terms. But the elegant watercolor pictures, which include helpful charts depicting a seed's growth into a plant, will pull children into the basic botany, while the pages filled with enticingly detailed seeds, both common and exotic, will encourage kids to wonder about the plant world's mysterious, gorgeous spectrum of possibilities. The illustrations in this book are excellent, sampling plants from around the world, near and far. The writing is brief, but informative. Suitable for children, enjoyable for adults.

This little book will inspire your child to want to plant some seeds! The way the books illustrations bring such whimsy and magic to the seeds and sprouts is so charming! The Family Treasure Nature Encylopedias series is wonderful, charming, and beautiful! My children and I love these books. A seed is sleepy is a gorgeous book! The illustrations are quite beautiful. This book is chock full for great information for learning. The way this series is written makes it easy for younger and older children to enjoy. The way the words just whimsically dance across the page is beautiful. A great asset to your home library or homeschool library.

This series is beautifully illustrated and written in a way that gives the child a deeper understanding of what she/he is interested in. Well written and technical enough but keeps their attention. Gifted to 4.5yo granddaughter.

This book is so beautiful and perfect for spring/summer learning. I love that it grows with your child. The big font reads like a story for littler ones with shorter attention spans. Then there's medium sized font for another level of learning, and even a smaller size with lots of fun facts. It quickly covers germination, flowering and fruit, pollination, seed parts, plant growth, photosynethesis, and more. And for those who care, there's no mention of evolution in this book.

Nieces and nephews loved it.

I liked this book for many reasons: it presented seeds in a way that i feel is approachable to children and I liked that it included more than typical seeds. There was additional text to read with facts on most pages. There was more text in this book than the egg book which means this book is not appropriate for preschool whereas I do use the egg book with preschoolers. I also felt the increase in text, though being very educational, took away from focusing on the images and comparing the seeds. Some of the larger seeds were cut off on the edges of the page so you could not tell their true size in order to make room for the text. I also took off one star because the cursive font (the main text for the book) was difficult for the children to read and they needed help. If you use the book with children 7+ who have been taught cursive, then this book should be fine.

I just love books that are both factual and beautiful, and this is absolutely one of them. Really fills you with a sense of wonder at the magic of the natural world. Text is very accessible even though it describes complex things and illustrations are simply beautiful. If you enjoy this one, you'll also love the Nature Storybooks series published by Walker - similar blend of beautiful book and fascinating facts.

This series is amazing. The books are high quality and provide information geared to children on the various topics featured in the books. The artwork in these books is detailed, beautiful and captivating for children and adults alike. When this series was used in our kindergarten class, the children enjoyed them very much and they led to different inquiries and ‘research’ projects. Beautifully written and illustrated!

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy bueno para la biblioteca infantil
Reviewed in Mexico on May 11, 2019
