Full of heart and humor, a memoir about becoming a doctor that's unlike anything you've ever read before.
All Tony Youn ever wanted was to fit in. One of two Asian‑American kids in a small midwestern town, he was tall and thin with Coke‑bottle glasses, Hannibal Lecter headgear, a bowl cut, and a protruding jaw that grew even faster than his comic‑book collection. He finally got his chance senior year as he lay strapped in an oral surgeon's chair having his jaw broken and reset--a brutal makeover that led him to his calling.

Egged on by his overachieving Korean father ("Doctor never get fired."), Tony spent the next four years mired in the angst, flubs, triumphs, nonstop studying, intermittent heavy drinking, and sexual frustration of medical school. He entered a shy, skinny nerd with no nerve, no game, and no clue. He left a doctor.

Heartwarming and laugh‑out‑loud funny,
In Stitches is a universal coming‑of‑age story about a kid who found the best in himself by bringing out the best in others and finally learned to be comfortable in his own skin.

Loved it!
I loved the humor of this book! I’m in my young twenties and I found this book extremely inspiring. I love how the author speaks his mind. If you prefer politically correct books, this isn’t for you. The author is so descriptive, you feel like your experiencing his experience along with him. Can’t wait to read Playing God!

Dr. Youn shares his experiences while in medical school, and he leaves nothing out. He has a grand sense of humor, and the book is very funny in parts, but he's a dedicated young medical student and has great empathy for his patients. He's also obviously very intelligent, although he doesn't say that, but it's easy to pick up that information. He talks about everything related to medical school - his classmates, his instructors, his friends, his sometimes suboptimal living conditions, his girlfriend, his classes, and the doctors and nurses with whom he works at the hospital. An excellent portrait of a young med student with great empathy and skill and a wonderful sense of humor. After I read In Stitches, I had to get my hands on his second book, Playing God, which was also an excellent book. I would recommend both these books to anyone interested in medical school, beginning a career in medicine, coping with the immense body of work required, and the entire hospital staff, as well as his patients. Dr. Youn obviously has great empathy and always goes the extra mile for his patients. If I wanted plastic surgery, I'd definitely go see him.

Seeing the progression of Anthony from an insecure Asian man, through to the completion of medical school and his evolution to a competent and confident human being, is a warm, enjoyable read. You start rooting for his success. It is a hard book to put down. This is a fascinating look at what goes on in preparing to become a doctor. The thoughts, dreams, sacrifices and extremely hard work involved presented with a light, humorous touch by this very likable young man.

Although I had never seen nor heard of Dr. Youn, I purchased "In Stitches - A Memoir" after getting a "look inside" here on Amazon. The content captured my attention and had me laughing out loud, so I just had to order it.

I was about 6 chapters in to another book, a thriller by the fabulous Lisa Gardner when I received In Stitches. I decided to just glance over through Chapter one, to preview what I had waiting for me when I finished my current one. Well, let me tell you, I couldn't put it down. I ended up delaying the other one and reading this one first (which, trust me, with my sometimes scattered attention span, is not something I generally do).

Dr. Youn is a funny, direct writer who really takes you to his "into" his life growing up in a strict Korean family. I could envision each and every paragraph playing out in my mind. Halfway through reading it, I felt as if I knew his parents, his best friends at Medical School, and all the people he encountered - personally. His style is so witty and charming and he's such a sweetie you can't help but love him and root for him. I can't for the life of me understand why he couldn't land a date.

After I finished the book, I went to Dr. Youn's website and saw some of his work. He has turned into a very skilled surgeon who is highly respected among his peers. I know if I needed a cosmetic procedure, I would definitely book a consultation.

That being said, is there a Sequel in the works? I'd love to go beyond Medical School, to hear more about he and Amy and how they started their lives together, how he built his medical practice, etc, etc.

In the meantime, check out "In Stitches". It's a quick, light hearted read that should leave you feeling better for having read it.

I'd been watching for a price drop in this book for a while, and snatched it up when it dropped (probably because he's coming out with a new book). I like medical memoirs, particularly those with plenty of case histories. This one was a little disappointing in that respect, but I enjoyed it so much. I liked getting a glimpse into what it can be like to grow up Korean in America, what it's like to be a young man who can't get a date, and what it's like going to medical school and how important friends can be.

While this was an easy read, it was also a memorable one. There were patients you won't forget, insights that were moving, and it was often very funny. Once I actually had to get up and walk around the room, I was laughing so hard. That doesn't happen to me very often. I recommended this to my husband who is also enjoying it, and also to my book group. There are lots of things to discuss in this happy book.

I got my training as a RN in a large teaching hospital in the early sixties. As tiring as it was for me I realized the medical interns had it worse. Watching them for 3 long yrs I can really relate to this book. It is a good read and I may reread when I feel the need for a sentimental journey
