Clive Cussler's The Devil's Sea (Dirk Pitt Adventure Book 26) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 11,816 ratings

Fearless adventurer Dirk Pitt must unravel a historical mystery of epic importance in the latest novel in the beloved New York Times bestselling series created by the “grand master of adventure” Clive Cussler.

In 1959 Tibet, a Buddhist artifact of immense importance was seemingly lost to history in the turmoil of the Communist takeover. But when National Underwater and Marine Agency Director Dirk Pitt discovers a forgotten plane crash in the Philippine Sea over 60 years later, new clues emerge to its hidden existence.

But Pitt and his compatriot Al Giordino have larger worries when they are ordered to recover a failed hypersonic missile from Luzon Strait. Only someone else is after it, too…a rogue Chinese military team that makes their own earthshattering discovery, hijacking a ship capable of stirring the waters of the deep into a veritable Devil’s Sea.

From the cold dark depths of the Pacific Ocean to the dizzying heights of the Himalaya Mountains, only Dirk Pitt and his children, Summer and Dirk Jr., can unravel the mysteries that will preserve a religion, save a nation…and save the world from war.

About the Author

Clive Cussler was the author of more than eighty books in five bestselling series, including Dirk Pitt®, NUMA Files®, Oregon Files®, Isaac Bell®, and Sam and Remi Fargo®. His life nearly paralleled that of his hero Dirk Pitt. Whether searching for lost aircraft or leading expeditions to find famous shipwrecks, he and his NUMA crew of volunteers discovered and surveyed more than seventy-five lost ships of historic significance, including the long-lost Civil War submarine Hunley, which was raised in 2000 with much publicity. Like Pitt, Cussler collected classic automobiles. His collection featured more than one hundred examples of custom coachwork. Cussler passed away in February 2020.

Dirk Cussler is the author of Clive Cussler’s The Devil’s Sea, and coauthor with Clive Cussler of eight previous Dirk Pitt adventures: Black Wind, Treasure of Khan, Arctic Drift, Crescent Dawn, Poseidon's Arrow, Havana Storm, Odessa Sea, and Celtic Empire. He serves as president of NUMA, where he continues his father's legacy of searching for important historical shipwrecks. He lives in Connecticut.

We have two adventures in the one book. Dirk, Jr. and Summer are on a journey to locate a lost ancient idol that disappeared when the airplane it was carried on crashed somewhere in the mountains of India. Meanwhile Dirk Pitt, while searching under the ocean for a destroyed secret rocket, is forced into a situation where China is attempting to steal a system that creates tsunamis and wants to use it to destroy Taiwan. A lot of adventure packed into this book.

For the author who got me into reading, there is nothing like a good Cussler book! I've not yet read a Cussler book that I didn't like! All of the teams and series are great!

This was a solid addition to the world of the Pitt family. It goes down like a fine glass of tequila, lots of fire during the middle and a warm glow at the end.

A CIA mission to evacuate the Dalai Lama instead takes relics from an important monastery but goes missing in the Himalayas, over 60 years later some of those relics appear on a plane in the Philippines right after a mineral survey ship causes a rogue wave with new technology that puts Taiwan in the crosshairs from squad of Chinese soldiers. The Devil’s Sea is the twenty-sixth installment of Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt series, the first exclusively written by Dirk Cussler after co-authoring the last eight.

In his first solo outing Dirk Cussler brought a tight fun narrative of two subplots that had connections with antagonists but independent from one another that showed off Cussler’s knowledge of the established characters and a great quality in prose. The antagonists are Chinese soldiers and intelligence operatives hunting down the remains for an experimental hypersonic missile while the others are after extraterrestrial minerals from certain meteorites needed to solve thermal issues with the missiles, ironically important Tibetan relics are made from these meteorites that happen to help China’s cultural assimilation of Tibet. This connectivity of the antagonists but also their independence from one another allows the teams Dirk & Al and the Twins to have their own adventures that are engaging and fun.

The Devil’s Sea continued the vibe of the Dirk Pitt series over the last eight installments as Dirk Cussler took solo control of the series, if this is a signal of how the series will continue then I’ll continue read it.

Gripping, and hard to put down from the moment you picked it up right up to the end. As you would expect from one of his thrillers it was full of twists and turns that you kept you guessing about which way the end was going to finish. Can't wait until I read the next one.

I saw the book on Amazon and wanted it at once. I ordered it and the next day it was in my possession. The price of some six euros was amazing for such a lovely book. I found the content of the book exciting and exhilarating and found it difficult to put down. Thank you Amazon for making it available to me, a person without transport.
