Spend the day with a grandma and granddaughter in this charming picture book about the magic found in their favorite accessory, a perfect gift this Mother's Day!

When Grandma Mimi comes to visit, she always brings warm hugs, sweet treats...and her purse. You never know what she'll have in there--fancy jewelry, tokens from around the world, or something special just for her granddaughter. It might look like a normal bag from the outside, but Mimi and her granddaughter know that it's pure magic!

In this adorable, energetic ode to visits from grandma, beloved picture book creator Vanessa Brantley Newton shows how an ordinary day can become extraordinary.

Vanessa celebrates self-love and acceptance of all cultures through her work, and hopes to inspire young readers to find their own voices. She first learned to express herself as a little girl through song. Growing up in a musical family, Vanessa’s parents taught her how to sing to help overcome her stuttering. Each night the family would gather to make music together, with her mom on piano, her dad on guitar, and Vanessa and her sister, Coy, singing the blues, gospel, spirituals, and jazz. Now whenever she illustrates, music fills the air and finds its way into her art. The children she draws can be seen dancing, wiggling, and moving freely across the page in an expression of happiness. Music is a constant celebration, no matter the occasion, and Vanessa hopes her illustrations bring joy to others, with the same magic of a beautiful melody.

Not a very engaging story

Not a very engaging story
The book was fine, the pictures were cute, but the story was kind of boring. It starts out with the little girl saying that her grandma's purse has all kinds of magical things inside. But grandma's purse just has a cell phone, hair pins and photos in it. I just thought it would have more interesting items. As another reviewer said, the words don't flow very smoothly either. "Will you show me what's inside? Yes she will!" It comes across a little forced. I can't see my daughter requesting to read a book about hair pins and an old cell phone. I would return it, but I've read that most returns to Amazon end up at the landfill, so I'll probably donate the book to the library.

I loved reading grandma's purse. the story in itself is magical thinking of all the times when I was young and the times I spent with my grandmother. always looking for hidden treasure in her purse which meant my favorite candies that she knew I loved. the beautiful illustrations as well sweeps you into the story and you get lost until the end. I give this book on a scale of 1 to 10 a 20:)

The board book copy is shaped like a purse! The vibrant colors and warm writing are engaging. When I gave this book as a gift, the proud new owner carried it around even after it was read to her. She was under two years old at the time.

This is such a sweet Grandma and granddaughter story, with the incredibly-relatable premise of going through Grandma's purse, where treasures abound! It reminded my daughters of their grandma, and they really enjoyed the story. Vanessa Brantley-Newton is also an incredible illustrator! We also own Mary Had a Little Glam and One Love, and I recommend those as well!
