The Naked Truth: A Memoir Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 185 ratings

Newly divorced and determined to reclaim her life, Leslie Morgan, bestselling author of Crazy Love and Mommy Wars, decided to spend a year searching for five new lovers in this “highly stimulating story of a midlife education” and “steamy, liberating tale of self-exploration and self-love” (Kirkus Reviews).

When Leslie Morgan divorced after a twenty-year marriage, both her self-esteem and romantic optimism were shattered. She was determined to avoid the cliché of the “lonely, middle-aged divorcée” lamenting her stretch marks and begging her kids to craft her online dating profile. Instead, Leslie celebrated her independence with an audacious plan: she would devote a year to seeking out five lovers in hopes of unearthing the erotic adventures and authentic connections long missing from her life.

Clumsy and clueless at first, she overcame mortifying early missteps, buoyed by friends and blind faith. And so she found men at yoga class, the airport, and high school reunions—all without the torture of dating websites. Along the way she uncovered new truths about sex, aging, men, self-confidence, and what it means to be a woman over fifty today.

Packed with fearless, evocative details,
The Naked Truth is a rare, unexpected, and wildly entertaining memoir about a soccer mom who rediscovers the magic of sexual and emotional connection, and the lasting gifts of reveling in your femininity at every age.

Review

"Leslie Morgan lays herself bare on every page and in every single way in this book. You will read it with your mouth on the floor, unable to budge until you turn the last page." —Cathi Hanauer, New York Times-bestselling author of The Bitch is Back and Gone

"Leslie Morgan invites us along on her fearless post-divorce ride, from the euphoria of rejuvenating sex to the thrills, confusion, and heartache of new love. This is a wise memoir (and a hot read!) for women seeking a new way to think about starting over in midlife with a sense of self-determination and adventure.”—
Julie Metz, author of Perfection

"Good news for women! Leslie Morgan tells us how women in their 50’s can have adventurous sex—divorced from the need for money, children or security—that is based on pure pleasure and fun. With her characteristic candor and clarity, Morgan describes her own experience as a divorced mother, and explores the dazzling ways that men and women can delight each other when social conventions and cultural needs are left behind
.”— Susan Cheever, author of Drinking in America: Our Secret History

"This book is a manifesto for smart middle-aged women who are done with this tired notion that we’re supposed to be invisible when, in fact, we’ve never been sexier in our lives." —
Kerry Cohen, author of Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity and Lush: A Memoir

"A funny and charming memoir about second acts in the life of the American female.”—
Molly Jong-Fast, author of Normal Girl, The Social Climber's Handbook, and the memoir, Girl [Maladjusted]

"A formidable, addictive storyteller, Morgan provides a highly stimulating story of a midlife education in the messiness of modern sex and love. A steamy, liberating tale of self-exploration and self-love that encourages readers to 'revel in your sexuality.'"
Kirkus Reviews

"This raunchy memoir is both funny and poignant."

"
The Naked Truth is proof of an experienced writer. ... an easy and compelling read." New York Journal of Books

"It’s a modern-day update to the classic Helen Gurley Brown book
Sex and The Single Girl ...It’s chatty and wry and funny, a Nancy Meyers movie in print, complete with an aspirational shingled beach house in Southampton." The Washington Post

I loved the author's honesty of feelings and thoughts throughout her story. She held very little back! How she got out of a dead marriage and managed to revive her self esteem is inspiring. She had help - close friends and new lovers were there to give her confidence but she found her own strength to figure out what she really wanted. It's an easy read - hard to put down. Very detailed sex scenes included.

The author reveals in detail and with total honesty the efforts she has undertaken to reclaim herself from the cumulative damage to her sense of self and her belief in her sexual persona resulting , she claims , her husband's demeaning and deprecating words and behavior.
Her rising from these lows to a belief in her self worth and a renewed belief in sexual attractiveness even to much younger men is told in uncensored, erotic , yet non- pornographic , detail.
However , the author fails to show the insights gained from her post-war divorce behavior or whether her endeavors will translate to meaningful personal groth.
Regardless , Morgan is a consummate storyteller and her story is well worth reading.

Reading this book felt like having a fascinating conversation over a bottle of wine with a good friend who shares with you her secret tales of sexual liberation post-divorce. It's a compelling story, which contains some surprisingly frank - but always authentic - intimate scenes. Leslie Morgan dusted herself off after a brutal divorce to an uncaring man, and found her spirit again, wisely realizing that she was in charge of crafting her future and deciding on a plan to find sexual fulfillment - and maybe a lasting relationship - along the way. Every moment of her story is alternately fascinating, funny, thrilling, sometimes awkward, but always honest, personal and ultimately appealing. She lets you into her heart and her psyche, and you empathise - and fantasize! - along with her as she meets her five lovers for trysts and contemplates where each relationship is heading. Her talent as a writer is clear in the way she takes the reader along for the ride through each relationship's arc, each rise and fall in the narrative of her personal journey. "The Naked Truth" is a book for our times, which will make an impact on a generation of women who are currently evaluating or re-evaluating their own relationships, or should be. And what's more important than that?

Author Les(…lie Morgan) in a prefatory piece says she has changed the names of some characters and some details so as not to cause anyone unnecessary embarrassment, so “Naked Truth” (NT) then is not exactly a autobio, nor a memoir; I guess that only leaves fiction as a closest descriptor. Character Leslie, hereafter C Les, is approaching 50, recently divorced, missing out on a lot of sex, and determined to make up for that. So she sets a goal of five lovers, preferably younger, much younger males. Five becomes the target for no particular reason, at least one that makes sense to me. And that is the plot summary pretty much highlighted in some book reviews of NT. It appealed to me - I was looking for a sexy read after a steady diet of crime fiction, history and politics for several weeks.

NT isn’t sexy despite a catchy title, an interesting plot of 25 words or less, and a striking book cover with a 20 second sketch of a reclining naked woman on the cover. It has several graphic scenes, but not anything especially memorable. C Les describes some intimate moments but tends to re-use some favorite words like “soaked” and “inside” a bit too much. While we all know there is no “i” in team, I can report there is a lot of “I” in NT; character Les seems to be all about “I”. And while she also uses the “love” word a good bit, I think C Les doesn’t have a clue as to it’s meaning. This story, for me, wasn’t at all enlightening – it was just sad. The message seems to be that women are looking for love, and we Neandrathals just want sex. Hmmm, interesting.

I believe C Les accomplishes her “5” goal, but I’m not sure. She gets a lot of great psychological advice from friends (I wonder how their marriages are, but I don’t think author Les shared that). I couldn’t keep track of who among the five, or six, was a repeat and who was a one-night stand. I was most interested in one guy who seemed to be on death’s doorstep but I don’t think we were ever told of his fate. And of course, there was the pilot….and the high school love…..and (yawn), it couldn’t end too soon. I see author Les has written other personal? fictional? accounts and she seems to have a faithful following, so I’m sure this book will do Ok.

Shipped faster than expected. A great read of the author’s journey of self rediscovery. Inspires many that libido is alive and well, albeit hiding at times. The author shares how she brought it out into the light, and how she made it a force to be reckoned with, healing from past emotional challenges.
I as hetro man, and relate to the messages inside. I admire the author’s take on finding one’s self after having the ground taken from beneath her feet. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a story of self redemption, self ownership, and for those who want to find their confidence as the author inspires.
