Bloom (The Overthrow Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 614 ratings

"The perfect book right now for young readers searching for hope, strength, inspiration — and just a little horticultural havoc."—New York Times

The first book in a can't-put-it-down, can't-read-it-fast-enough action-thriller trilogy that's part
Hatchet, part Alien!

The invasion begins--but not as you'd expect. It begins with rain. Rain that carries seeds. Seeds that sprout--overnight, everywhere. These new plants take over crop fields, twine up houses, and burrow below streets. They bloom--and release toxic pollens. They bloom--and form Venus flytrap-like pods that swallow animals and people. They bloom--everywhere, unstoppable.

Or are they? Three kids on a remote island seem immune to the toxic plants. Anaya, Petra, Seth. They each have strange allergies--and yet
not to these plants. What's their secret? Can they somehow be the key to beating back this invasion? They'd better figure it out fast, because it's starting to rain again....

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What a story! Kenneth Oppel has written a thriller so exciting that the pages might well have been printed with adrenaline."—Wall Street Journal

"The book rockets off, and Oppel never eases up on the gas." — New York Times

"
A phenomenal kickoff to an enthralling trilogy. The conclusion is especially powerful, delivering an overwhelming roller-coaster ride of relief and horror." —School Library Journal, starred review

“Wilderness survival and alien invasion combine for
an exciting page-turner.” —Booklist

“Action-thriller led by three characters whose backstories continue to unfurl with intriguing detail…
will leave readers satisfied.”–The Bulletin

"In this
fast-paced thriller, Oppel spins a richly drawn, incredibly fascinating world. Beginning with the brilliantly unique premise of a botanical alien invasion, the plot unravels satisfyingly, building readers' curiosity by creating 10 new questions for every answer given. A thrilling alien-invasion novel based on a chillingly nefarious premise." —Kirkus Reviews

"BLOOM is a lightning-paced adventure that grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. This book is ridiculously fun ... and by 'fun' I mean terrifying!" —Jonathan Auxier, author of The Night Gardener

"Absolutely riveting. Superb storytelling, great characters and an environmental crisis — readers will hardly be able to wait for the second book in the trilogy."—The Globe and Mail

Steadily adds new horrors, potently escalating the story’s pace, stakes, and anxiety as the plants crowd out food crops, explosively release allergy-causing pollen, and begin exhibiting carnivorous tendencies." —Publishers Weekly

I read this book in a day. It's a great thriller, full of frightening surprises and exciting escapes. The main characters are relatable teens dealing with broken relationships and teenage stuff until a mysterious rain covers the land. The rain is followed by black grass growing incredibly fast all over town (and the world). The grass isn't the worst of it, though, but I won't spoil anything. As the terror increases, so do the mysteries surrounding the three main characters and the sudden changes they are experiencing. It's a combination that makes the book hard to put down. Really fun. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

My 13yr. Old had to read and write an assignment for her summer reading and chose this book. She gave it a 4 1/2 over all and said she is looking forward to reading the conclusion in the future.

my classroom. One of my students brought it in earlier in the year and shared a bit about it with the class. I bought a copy for the library, and it has been a hit. It's a good balance of action and suspense with three complex characters.

at 35 years old i am definitely not the target audience for this book. i came across it by accident, it was a recommendation from amazon based on one of my previous searches and i was intrigued (i believe absolutely that there's life on other planets). so once the final book was released i bought the trilogy. i've just finished the first book and wow! it was epic! it just flowed beautifully. there were no moments where my attention started to wander, no moments when the plot started to flag. this is easily the best book i've read this year and i would recommend it to everyone. now, if you'll excuse me, i need to go and read the next book in the trilogy. and then i need to read the next one. and then , most likely , i need to go back to book one and start it all over again.

Another great read from Kenneth Oppel. His characters are creative and yet relatable, the situation is dire, and the action never stops. And lucky us -- there are two more in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read in ages
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2020
I loved this book and will be reading it to my year 6 class in September. If you enjoyed The Boy in the Tower, you will love this one as the theme is very similar but I would say this one is more suitable for slightly older children. It has just the right level of gruesome detail that appeals to children without being too scary. The ending is satisfying but sets the reader up for the sequel which hasn't come out yet.
