It's the eve of the Texas River Odyssey, and Sadie Scofield is finally ready for the 265-mile canoe race. It's three days of grueling, nonstop paddling, where every turn of the river reveals new challenges -- downed trees, poisonous snakes, alligators -- but the dangers are all worth it. Reaching the finish line is the only way for Sadie to redeem herself for last year, when one small mistake spiraled into disaster.
Sadie has spent a year training, and she's ready for anything . . . except for her brother ditching her at the last minute for a better team.
She has no choice but to team up with Cully, her former best friend turned worst enemy. Everything about him irritates her, from his stupid handsome face to the way he holds his paddle. But as the miles pass, the pain builds, and family secrets come to light, Sadie realizes she’ll have to work with Cully instead of against him. Last year's race was a catastrophe, but this year's race just might change her life in ways she never imagined.
With an unforgettable heroine and an immersive setting, Holly Green's captivating debut promises heart-stopping action and a swoony romance that will leave you cheering.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2023As an older adult, I definitely enjoyed this book. I've always been interested in the Texas Water Safari, upon which the book's boat race is based. The main character, who initially didn't trust her shipmate, learned and grew during the multi-day trek.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021I don’t suppose I’ll ever participate in a three-day canoe race, but thanks to this book I don’t have to. I already know what it might feel like. Every sight and sound and sensation felt so real, as did the characters. You really come care about them over the course of this book and their ending is completely satisfying. I highly recommend this gripping and immersive book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2023“It’s the draw of the Odyssey. Digging deep down and seeing what you’re made of. What you’re willing to do to succeed. And what, if anything, can make you quit.”
— In The Same Boat
I love outdoor adventure books and this one was good. The author definitely knew what she was talking about regarding the Odyssey, which is based on The Texas River Safari. You almost feel like you’re there with Sadie and Cully, although you’re really glad to be sitting on your couch while you follow their adventure. The race is unforgiving and brutal.
Sadie and Cully used to be best-friends until their dads had a major blowout six years before and their friendship imploded. Due to Sadie’s brother ditching her a day before the race, she ends up racing with Cully who she despises. This novel really focuses on the adventure part more than the romance and I really enjoyed it.
If you like outdoor adventure and YA novels, you’ll really like this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2021This is a riveting YA novel that I loved even as a 35 year old. The relationships between the protagonist and her rowing partner and her family drew me in. I honestly thought I might get bored of a few hundred pages talking about two people on a boat, but I was blown away. I read this in a weekend, and wish there was more!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2021I loved this book!! Favorite YA novel of the year by far. I sat down expecting to read a chapter or two and got sucked in almost immediately. Ended up finishing the whole book in one day! Definitely has re-read potential and I'll be recommending it to all my friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021This is everything I'm looking for when I open a book-- badass girl athlete, a new sport to learn about, and for bonus credit, plop a hottie she hates in the front seat. Devoured it, loved every moment.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021Gripping from start to finish. You're going to care about these characters. Trust me.
