- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2014I wasn't expecting this from Jason Webster. I found him to be a charming and intricate mystery writer. This is much more than that and I will never look at my trips to Spain quite the same way again. The Spanish civil war and its terrible aftermath are a blot on the history of the so-called civilized world. That Spain has emerged from under that slate grey cloud is testimony to the resilience of her people...the possibility that the clouds could roll back in is very real. Academics and scholars might tell you this too but reading this little book may bring it home in ways less intellectual and much more real than any text book. For me....I can only say thanks Jason...Hola and mucho gusto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Below Spain’s Surface
Jason Webster's, "Guerra," provides an overview of the events and players in the Spanish Civil War, interwoven with his own contemporary exploration of Spain’s past. We meet some larger-than-life characters like the transgender Kiki, and follow Webster on some fearless/crazy escapades in his quest to understand the reality of a war that Spain’s citizens have never really come to terms with. The book was published a few years ago when mass graves of Franco’s victims were just beginning to be dug up. Webster's troubling journey offers a glimpse of what lies behind those excavations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good look at the Spanish Civil War
I've read his previous books and enjoyed them so I knew 'Guerra' would be just as good, mixing his personal life and experience with his study into the subject be it Flamenco or here the Civil war. The Spanish Civil War is quite a complicated issue and I have never found any really good readable books on it and my Spanish friends never really want to talk about what happened so I was happy to see that Jason Webster had written a book on this thorny subject. Parts of it our quite depressing, I lived in Spain for many years and love the people and country so it is disturbing to see the dark side of a country I know pretty well, but reality often is shocking. 5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and informative
Historians, mainly British ones, have written at length on the Spanish civil war 1936-39 (see Paul Preston's The Spanish Holocaust if you want a really detailed account), but what Guerra! gives us is the human perspective while filling us in on quite a lot of history. He interleaves stories of events and personalities from the war with his own experiences visiting sites and talking to those in Spain whose lives were affected by the war. Now nearly 80 years away, the history of that period is being buried in Spain together with the remains of the hundreds of thousands who died as a result of it. The Ley de Memoria Historica was meant to reawaken those memories and record those events, but the law has been largely stiffled by the rightwing, still so powerful in Spain.
I hope this book will be translated into Spanish and inspire more such research in any language.
And too I hope knowing about war and the genocide that flows from fear and hatred of others will help us to step away from our darker side, to find a better way.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on the Spanish Civil war
I am biased because I live in Spain, but I never understood why I never heard in detail of the Spanish civil war, neither here, neither at school in my home country.
I was shocked by the atrocities. But this book did make me understand a lot about the Spanish culture and how it is today. Very, very interesting. But it is not a novel - although I thought it was an easy read, there are a lot of facts here.
Very recommended for anyone interested in the recent history of Spain, and understanding the country's psyche.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable account of the legacy left by the Spanish Civil War.
If you are at all interested in what happened in Spain during the Civil War but don't want to get bogged down in the detail of the many political parties and factions that were involved, then this book is a good starting point. Well written in a style which is very readable, it gives a real feel for the legacy the events of the civil war have left on the people of the country.
Gave it 4 stars, because the slant is very much from the republican side. When reading it, you need to bear in mind that there is a story to be told from the nationalist perspective. It's never easy to get a totally balanced view from any writer on the Spanish conflict, but to give you a real feel for the events, Websters book is a great opener.
