★ ‘‘An appealing introduction to an important culture largely overlooked in children’s literature in the United States’’ – Kirkus

In this tale set in the ancient Inka (sometimes spelled Inca) empire, Little Chaski has a big job: he is the Inka King’s newest royal messenger. On his first day delivering messages he stops to help several creatures in need along the way, causing him to nearly miss his sunset deadline. But the kindness he bestowed on these animals winds up helping him in surprising ways. Descriptive language and bold illustrations give readers insight into Little Chaski’s nervousness and excitement as he runs the Inka Trail, working earnestly to fulfill the responsibilities of his new role.

Review

★ ‘‘An appealing introduction to an important culture largely overlooked in children’s literature in the United States’’ – Kirkus

“If you want something set during the Incan Empire, finding the right book can be hard. This one might fill such a gap” – Betsy Bird, Librarian, @FuseEight

“Llanos shares her passion for Peruvian stories in this vibrant tale, set in an Inka kingdom, that explores accountability and kindness . . . Johnson's bold illustrations, in saturated colors and blocky shapes, add to the lively atmosphere, with plenty of historical and cultural touches nicely incorporated into the scenes” – Booklist

★ “Beautiful illustrations inspired by Peruvian folk art fill each page, bringing to life the beauty of the Inka culture . . . An excellent addition to picture book collections, providing a wonderful introduction to and a celebration of the Inka that will pull readers in from the start” – The School Library Journal, starred review

“Children will enjoy the action-packed story . . . This entertaining and informative book would be a good choice for elementary or public library collections. Libraries wanting to grow their multicultural collection should purchase” – School Library Connection

This book truly has something for everyone. Kids will love the story of Little Chaski and are sure to delight in the colorful illustrations as he runs along the Inka Trail to make an important delivery. Parents and teachers will love the informative aspect of the book. The story is fiction, but the back of the book gives information about the real chaskis of the Inka empire as well as the animals the reader sees in the story and more. It's the perfect book to plan a lesson around or to take you and your family to another part of the world (and another time!) without ever leaving home. Highly recommended!

Maria Llanos weaves a tale of Incan culture and lessons of kindness that is sure to please. Children come away with a bit of knowledge about Incan history and culture, the Quechua language, but most of all a love for the new messenger for the Inca whose kindness shines through as he dedicates himself to his new job. Fun read and wonderful illustrations by Mariana Ruiz Johnson. Highly recommend!

My kids (7 and 4) enjoyed everything about this book, the message, pictures and learning Quechua ♥️

There are so many things that I love about this book. I love the story itself with its focus on trying something new and not giving up. I love that the theme of kindness runs through the book. I love the Quechua words used throughout and the glossary at the end. In fact, I love all of the back matter because contains a lot of interesting information of the culture and history of the Inka. And I adore the illustrations which are bold, vibrant and full of movement. My five-year-old son loved the story too. His favorite parts were about all the Peruvian animals that Little Chaski encounters. We’ll definitely come back to this book again and again.

I love Run, Little Chaski! It has an endearing main character, engaging plot, and captivating setting. Peruvian-born author Mariana Llanos wrote a tale about perseverance, kindness, and compassion set in the ancient Inka empire. The back matter includes a glossary of Quechua words, information about the Inka empire, chaskis, and the Inka trail. I especially love the heartfelt author’s note. The illustrations by Mariana Ruiz Johnson are bold, whimsical, and capture the little messenger’s journey and adventures in a delightful way.

This book is utterly delightful. The two Marianas, Llanos (author) and Ruiz Johnson (illustrator) beautifully captured the spirit of Peru and the vital role that chaskis played at the height of the Inka empire. Loved all the details of the Andean animals including the Peruvian hairless dog, which added vital touches of authenticity to the story. A gem of a book sure to inspire kids to learn more about the ancient civilizations of Latin America.
