Purchase options and add-ons
Alexis thought she led a typically dysfunctional high school existence. Dysfunctional like her parents' marriage. Or her doll-crazy twelve-year-old sister, Kasey. Or even like her own anti-social, anti-cheerleader attitude.
When a family fight results in some tearful sisterly bonding, Alexis realizes that her life is creeping from dysfunction into danger. Kasey is acting stranger than ever: her blue eyes go green, sometimes she uses old-fashioned language, and she even loses track of chunks of time, claiming to know nothing about her strange behavior. Their old house is changing, too. Doors open and close by themselves. Water boils on the unlit stove, and an unplugged air conditioner turns the house cold enough to see their breath in.
Alexis wants to think that it's all in her head, but soon, what she liked to think of as silly parlor tricks are becoming life-threatening: to her, her family, and to her budding relationship with the class president. Alexis knows she's the only person who can stop Kasey—but what if that green-eyed girl isn't even Kasey anymore?

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2011Once upon a time there was a little girl. She was sweet and pretty and rich. Such a darling little angel, with blond hair and the greenest eyes. Everybody loved her and wanted to be her friend. They would come from miles around just to play with her at her lovely home.
Then one birthday she received a present. A beautiful doll that she loved very much. She would take her everywhere she went. She would even pretend that her dolly talked back to her.
Well, not everyone was quite so happy with her affection for her doll. You see, they were jealous. And jealousy can make people do bad things. Really bad things.
So, the moral of this story is to always remember to play nice. Because you never know when your actions may come back to haunt you. And if not you, then maybe your daughter or your daughter's daughter. Because an angry spirit does not forget and bad girls don't always die.

Bad Girls Don't Die is Katie Alender's eerie and chilling debut novel. Part horror, part mystery, this story will capture you right at the start, pull you in and make you look over your shoulder every time a slight breeze touches the back of your neck.
Alexis Warren is the school outcast who doesn't even fit in with the misfits she hangs out with. Her parents are absentee and her little sister Kasey, once outgoing and friendly, is now a thirteen-year-old weirdo with a doll collection. Even her home doesn't fit in, with its mish-mash of architectural details.
Ever since her best friend left town she has preferred to spend much of her time alone, taking pictures. So when odd things start happening around the house she thinks she must be going crazy. And when her sister starts acting even stranger she wonders if maybe she's not the only one.
But when her nemesis, cheerleader Megan Wiley, notices Kasey's odd behavior she has a different theory altogether. And if she's right, being crazy would be the least of their worries.
Author Katie Alender has written a compelling, suspenseful and creepy story that will make you think twice about ever owning a doll, moving into an old house or stepping foot into a dark basement. The story flows smoothly even as the tension builds and is interspersed with just the right amounts of sarcasm and humor to bring some light into this dark tale.
This story is a must read, not only for fans of the young adult paranormal genre, but for anyone who loves a scary story. It's got all the thrills without the gore and enough spookiness to give you the shivers.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2010I blew through this great little story in half a day, unable to stop until I reached the final page. Ms. Alender has created a complete experience for the reader, filled with fleshed out characters, a vibrant backdrop and an appropriate mixture of teen angst, romance and suspense. Alexis and Kasey (sisters) have a dynamic and realistic relationship which adds the appropriate level of tension and emotion to the more action based scenes.
The protag in this story is equal parts funny, quirky, charming, snide, intelligent and rude, an interesting combination of qualities but appropriate for someone of her age. What kept my interest piqued was her responses to situations did not always marry with my expectations and it was clear that the character surprised even herself on a myriad of occasions. There was a true evolution of character that transpired between first and last page and Alexis' metamorphosis from closed-off, snarky, troublemaker to thoughtful, caring and selfless friend proved as big an element of the story as the unfolding mystery. This transformation also added a level of depth to a story which could have easily veered into campy lit.
Though at times a tad predictable, it's easily forgotten as you breeze through the well crafted narration and realistic dialogue. On more than a few occasions I found myself "talking" to Alexis as she navigated the maze of puzzle pieces in her quest for the truth, saying "no, not that!" or "you've got it all wrong!" or "get out of the room!". In my estimation, when you have moments like that, when you feel the character is real enough to shout at, you're reading a well crafted piece of fiction.
End note: I've read quite a bit of Y/A lit, as it is my job to do, and this is by far one of the better stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2011Alexis is a pink-haired outcast. She may not have many friends, but she spends most of her time immersed in her photography. At night, both Alexis and Kasey notice a faint glow that can't be explained. It seemed to have been in the house, but through the viewfinder of her camera, Alexis realized that the light wasn't getting larger- it was getting closer. The next night, it seems as though her neurotic, oversensitive little sister, Kasey, changed. She's more put together and begins to speak differently.
Alexis can feel something different about the old house they've lived in since they were children, as if there was another presence. When strange things begin to happen, she pushes them aside, figuring that her sister had just gone off the deep end. Eventually, she realizes that there's more at stake than she realized. Lives are being threatened and she has to get as much information as she can muster up in order to save the people she never thought she'd get involved with.
I was torn whether to give this book a 4 or a 5 for rating. I enjoyed it a lot. It was a fast-paced read and the author kept the story interesting, with entertaining characters, dialogue, and unexpected twists and turns in the plot. Around the time I picked this book up, I didn't hear much about it and looking at the summary, I thought it was just about a creepy doll. Call me slow, but it didn't occur to me that it was about possession until someone mentioned it. There were even parts in the book where I had to stop reading just to gather what had just happened.
This was the perfect read for Halloween (especially since it took place in October, as well). I wouldn't call it a scary book, but it definitely had its creepy moments. You know, the ones where you check over your shoulder or snuggle a little closer to your cat. Or maybe that's just me.
I will definitely be looking into the sequel, From Bad to Cursed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this in middle school
Not scary but very good - story wise. I read the trilogy back in middle school - i picked up the second one (from bad to cursed) at the schoolastic book fair. The third and final one (as dead as it gets) is just as good and is a good conclusion. Great trilogy to get out of a reading slump too! The chapters aren't long, and they're easy to digest, and the book is only 346 pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fesselnder Auftakt einer Triologie
