The Dunsmuir Saga Paperback – January 1, 1994
The Dunsmuir Saga brings to life three generations of the legendary Dunsmuir family of Vancouver Island.
Robert Dunsmuir -- canny, acquisitive and imaginative -- became the richest man in British Columbia; his sons struggled to consolidate the family fortune; his grandchildren spent it. Award-winning author Terry Reksten brings the members of the Dunsmuir family and their colourful saga to life with her lively writing, vivid anecdotes and careful research. A selection of 50 historical photographs depicts the Dunsmuirs and their grand style of life.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2011I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to know more about this interesting, and very human, family......and also the time and area in which they lived. My husband and I took a tour of the Castle while on a vacation to British Columbia, and were fascinated not only by the imposing structure, but also intrigued by the family who called it home. Of course, the Craigdorraigh castle is in some ways merely a small part of the history of the Dunsmuirs, and this book lays out the entire story of the young couple who arrived in British Columbia at a pivotal time in it's history, and their life stories are tied very much with the development of this beautiful area. I really feel I have an understanding of what really transpired during this time in British Columbia, and my information comes from this wonderfully researched and well written book. So often, a book of this nature is written by someone who may be completely enthralled with the subject matter, but is, sadly, not able to put all the pieces together in a cohesive thorough and very readable way! Terry Rekston is to be congratulated on an excellent book! The time period simply comes alive as you read her words...... And it is written so clearly that you are able to get a picture of what each individual was like, and their significance......or lack of lasting significance.......within the family structure. This was a very large family, and it goes through several generations....... But they were so interesting, and each so unique, that you come away with a clear picture of each person's strengths, as well as, weaknesses. I notice she has written several books and I have already ordered another title about the city of Victoria.......I look forward to reading all titles by this author.....she is that good!
A history of a family this influential and important in the development of the area, must include a true representation of the time and conditions in which they lived. This was one of the wonderful surprises about this book....... The social, political and economic realities of the time are explained in a very interesting and informative manner........ This is how to make history come alive! I am so very glad I got this book, and can definitely see myself reading it again in years to come, it is the kind of book where you notice more things with each reading....... I think it would make a marvelous movie some day!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2015Not worth the money! Expected a "story", but was sad to read only mining factoids. LOVED visiting the castle, though.
