From the Inside Flap
John Bradshaw's compelling new book takes us into the heart of the family's mysterious power to impact our lives. It ex-plores how secrets are created, how they influence us (even if we don't know they exist), and the risks we take in exploring them.
At the core of Family Secrets is a step-by-step guide to uncovering the secrets of the past and present, using a tool called the genogram to chart key relationships. Through many fascinating examples, this unique book shows how to recognize crucial gaps and silences, reconstruct missing information, and decipher partial memories.
It also offers readers vital advice on how to deal with the truths revealed, plus ways to stay safely and honestly connected with our families.
John Bradshaw's six-part PBS television series, "Family Secrets," first aired in summer 1995, and will remain in syndication in the United States and Canada through 1997. A second new series, "John Bradshaw on Eating Disorders," is also in circulation.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2023He is brilliant about family dynamics and the roles we play and the secrets we keep.
I enjoyed waking up and being validated for what J was experiencing in my dysfunctional family. The freedom from living in truth, is worth it all! Deep bow to John Bradshaw and his incredible insight and easy communication to help us all untether ourselves from the family lies.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2015Excellent companion book to the other series by John Bradshaw. This goes into the intricate details of family dynamics showing the many relationships that exists below the surface (secrets) of consciousness knowledge. Highly recommended for those who want to study destructive family dynamics and destructive relationship problems within the family. Offers proven solutions and answers to a lot of difficult and familiar problems.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2006Family Secrets provides powerful tools for understanding the dynamics of families, and understanding how you may have become unknowingly enmeshed in patterns that can persist for generations.
The most valuable parts of the book are the techniques for uncovering family secrets, and the method for bringing all the information together in such a way that it makes sense. These techniques are practical and really work. I made several major discoveries about families I am involved with as a result of this book.
Bradshaw includes many new insights about how families work throughout the book.
Overall, highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2015I like the non-judgmental perspective of this book. Although I happen to believe that holding secrets may cause dis-ease or subtle health issues because we are not fully living in our TRUTH, I do respect the dilemma of holding back information for the sake of harmony and well-being of others. This book presents the choices we have, and suggestions for how to assess when to reveal, and when to keep hidden. I recommend this book simply because it opens up important dialog over the issues of family secrets and how they affect us.
In the end, I have to say it is always best to check with one's conscience, and follow the path to the greatest peace, no matter if you face rejection or abandonment. Our personal health - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual - trumps any other criteria. When we are TRUE to our deepest sense, then we are in a position to give the best help to others. This book is an oldie, but a goodie.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2009Great book, bad customer service. Bought this as a gift to send to another address. Took almost a MONTH to be delivered AND I called 7 times for info on shipping and could not get ANY info. Philadelphia book club never responded to any of my Emails and Amazon would not give me any info on phone numbers to reach them.
It should never take a month to go from Phil to Boston, AND there HAS TO BE a way to track the shipment

5.0 out of 5 stars but best to get all of the skeletons out of the ...
It's a darn long journey, but best to get all of the skeletons out of the closet, it serves you the purpose of beginning to know yourself, and free yourself from the dysfunctions that just get passed down the generations and the incidents and pain that is denied and shoved into a closet, swept under a rug, finally you are free.

5.0 out of 5 stars critical for people who are searching for answers in life
Family secrets- the path to self exceptance and reunion and family secrets- what you don't know can hurt you are essentially the same book with a different title as I found out when I bought both.
They are ecceptionally excellent books to work with for those of us in recovery from liufe issues and will blow your mind appropriately with the information contained and how to relate it to yourself. In my seventh year of recovery my mentor pointed me towards this book and I read it flat in 3 days and then re read it again doing the work set out in it along aside my mentor. It completely opened my eyes to things that I was tied to without realizing and how the sins of the forefathers are past down through the generations. It is a book that to read you must have linkage with a support network to deal together as the journey this book takes you is factual, obvious when it is explained as it is and a one size fits all personal journey for the individual. It totally changed my emotional recovery and more me to knew freedom and understandings I wouldn't have been able to see with out it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
The book unread and in mint condition. I came across the title in a Blog and the autor doesn't disappoint. I can recommend to anyone who wants to make an improvement in their lives and want to break through the Walls erected by family memebers and ancestors.
