The Near Witch Paperback – January 28, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Brand new edition of Victoria Schwab's long out-of-print, stunning debut.
All-new deluxe edition of an out-of-print gem, containing in-universe short story "The Ash-Born Boy" and a never-before-seen introduction from V.E. Schwab.
The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.
If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.
There are no strangers in the town of Near.
These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.
But when an actual stranger, a boy who seems to fade like smoke, appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.
The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion.
As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi's need to know about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.
Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab's debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won't soon forget.

Is the long dead Near back to punish these men who chose to murder her, falsely blaming her for missing children a century ago, that she's not guilty of taking back then, or is she's just looking for peace and a respectful burial..Can they get her bones be found in time before another innocent victim is killed by these men that feel they'll never get their kids back, and now want to hurt a strange but sweet, innocent young man with his own past traumas.
The characters are loveable, but in Near only the women seem wise, but exist at a time when men rule by brute force and thick headedness.. Does Lexi get help before it's too late and get back the stolen children...You'll devour this book in two nights, I did. I hope there's a sequel. I love this authors work. I promise you'll love this one too.
The end of this book has a short story that is some of the best writing I have read in years. I was riveted and my heart beat as it wrapped up explaining who Cole is. His story deserves a book in itself..You can start at the end and then read again. Amazing writing. Every sentence of "Cole's'" story is breathtaking.
The Near Witch is a lovely story about magic and witches and family, trust, and judgment. I loved how the story captures you and takes you to the moors. There’s enough detail about all the right things and enough ambiguity where there needs to be as well. I read the book quickly because, like Addie LaRue, you’re focused on the character and what she does and experiences. Schwab doesn’t bog you down with overly descriptive passages about things that don’t matter.
The Near Witch tells the tale of Lexi Harris in her small community called Near. Everyone knows everyone, so when a mysterious stranger enters their town, and unexplainable things happen, the best – and the worst – is brought out within the community.
This is one of those underrated books that, I hope, stands the test of time. The themes within it are present today in fear of the unknown, fear of strangers, fear of different beliefs, and fear of change. Be kind and be curious, but don’t assume malice before proof.
This was felt like a nice simple fable/fairy tale, which is also a particular favorite of mine. It had nice intrigue and a hint of magic. I think the characters lacked some depth to them. Like Lexi we got loved her family but I struggled to really connect with her.
A bit of insta love which I didn’t exactly mind but I also felt like Cole was a bit too vague. I liked that we got his story at the end though.
Not very original plot wise, but a lovely ride regardless!
I will always freely admit i am a massive VE Schwab fan. THE NEAR WITCH seems different than her other works. As her first novel, THE NEAR WITCH is smaller, a more intimate story. Her characters don't quite have the complexity she is now known for, but you can see the beginnings of everything to come. Lexi is stubborn and filled with angst and conviction. She's the character you want to root for. Cole's mystery is what seems compelling. The love story is alright, but it is secondary to the overall conflict.
There are many themes throughout: family, love, acceptance, isolation. Everything is brought together well but unexceptionally.
What truly sets this book apart is the absolutely gorgeous writing and amazing setting/atmosphere. Schwab has a lyrical storytelling quality that makes you feel the grass of the moors at your feet, see the wind blown trees, and connect with the natural rhythm and beauty of Near just like Lexi does. This has become one of my favorite books for the writing alone.
THE NEAR WITCH is one of those hauntingly beautiful books you should crack open on a blustery, rainy night. It is subtle, quiet, and unimposing, but settles around you like a comfortable blanket. There is something familiar in the tale of witches and young love that makes this simple story a treat to experience. I have a feeling I'm going to read this book again and again.

There are a wealth of good-to-great fantasy/fable storytellers in the market place, but Ms. Schwab has deservedly earned her place among the best. My collection of her books continues to grow, and I've found nothing yet that has been less than stellar. I am a fan!
Lexi, our young hero, is a force to be reconned with. She struggles to do what she feels is right due to the men of Near who overlook and belittle her, trying to control her. This was in utter contrast to how she was treated by the women around her, and I loved how those who knew her best encouraged her to be true to herself.
Schwab’s story of Lexi’s hunt for the truth seems to effortlessly take us through a whirlwind of emotions; anger, fear, faith, love and desperation, to name a few, with the help of a well rounded supporting cast, including my favourites; Magda and Dreska, to my least favourite; Tyler.
Covering a number of important themes, like prejudice, fear and belonging, Schwab sprinkles a little bit of magic to bring together this unique and lovely story.
The story is very nostalgic and well written. I wanted to know more about Cole, so it's good this edition has an additional story at the end.
I'm not a fan of first-person narrative though. The limitations of first person made some parts difficult to believe.
