ELLE, THE GOVERNOR’S DAUGHTER, knows she lives a life of privilege. But the expectations and pressure may be too much to handle. She wants to follow her own path, whatever that means.
THEIR CONNECTION IS IMMEDIATE, and so are their problems. Drix is not the type of boy Elle’s parents have in mind for her, and Elle is not the kind of girl who can understand Drix’s messy life. But sometimes love can breach all barriers, if only Drix and Elle can push themselves—and each other—to finally get what they deserve.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019After reading and loving Katie McGarry’s Pushing the Limits, I knew I had to read Say You’ll Remember Me!! I mean just look at that cover. I love the deep purple and magenta colors but also the font of the title. The cover works really well with the story. I didn’t realize it until now when I read it a second time. Say You’ll Remember Me is realistic, heartfelt, funny, honest, and inspiring. This is a story that will move you emotionally and will stay with long after you’ve finished reading it.
My favorite aspect of Say You’ll Remember Me are the characters!! Especially the main characters, Hendrix “Drix” Pierce and Ellison “Elle” Monroe. They are great when they’re apart but these two are fireworks when they are together!! They come from completely different backgrounds but can relate to each other on a deeper level. This made the story feel like a forbidden romance in a Contemporary book, which I liked. Hendrix Pierce looks like a bad boy but he’s actually a soft boy who loves his family and music. He’s made mistakes but he’s character development in the book was so sincere and profound. Elle’s character development was something that I wasn’t expecting until some shocking events that happened. She’s feisty, intelligent, passionate, and caring. This novel deals with a specific issue in society and shows how important it is for young people to use their voice. To stand up for who/what they believe in and truly make a change in the world. Katie wrote this aspect really well in the story!! Something else I enjoyed was the strong relationships that Drix, Axle, Marcus, Dominic, Holiday, and Kellen have together. It’s a family that was created by choice, not because all them are related by blood. They are a family because they love, care, and support each other. It was so sweet, powerful, and endearing! Everyone deserves to experience having such loyal friends/family. I loved how the dog entered the book. Thor is such a cute name for a dog. I love dogs so books that have pets in the story are great. All of these characters are heartbreakingly amazing and I felt like I was physically there with them or know them personally.
I need to mention the power of music in Say You’ll Remember Me!! Music plays a part in this book because the characters are talented musicians. I’ve always enjoyed reading about characters who have artistic and creative hobbies. I love listening to music while I read and associating songs which certain characters/books. Also, Katie McGarry makes playlists for her books. I have made playlists for my favorite books and it’s awesome to see authors do it too!! Say You’ll Remember Me is such a beautifully written novel. While I was I reading, I found myself thinking “wow, that’s a great quote!” multiple times. That’s how good of a writer Katie McGarry is!! I can see the improvement of Katie’s writing between Pushing the Limits and Say You’ll Remember Me. This book is definitely become a favorite of mine and worth reading. If you looking for an authentic and genuine YA Contemporary Romance, I highly recommend Say You’ll Remember Me!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2018When Drix is accepted into the governor's Second Chance program, he knows he will have to walk a straight and narrow path to take advantage of the opportunities the program gives him. There isn't any other option for him. Even though he was incarcerated for a crime he did not commit, he knows that's his past condemns him in society and his future success depends on conforming to the rules of the program.
Elle wants to escape from her parent's rules and the shackles of being in the public eye for a little while by playing games on the carnival midway, and fate intervenes when Drix ends up saving her from two men verbally harassing her. He's immediately taken with her, and life gets interesting when he finds out she's the governor's daughter.
The relationship between Elle and Drix grows gradually as they find common ground. Both are shackled to some extent and when they end up traveling together, their friendship grows into something more and that causes all sorts of trouble for the campaigning governor and Drix.
I loved the political aspects of the story, as it is very timely with what is happening in the world today. Elle walks a fine line between portraying the image her parents want and what she wants in her life. Wanting to be with Drix doesn't exactly fall into her parent's rules, but she sees him anyway, and in the process secrets are revealed that can change Drix's life.
There's a lot going on in Say You'll Remember Me beyond the political aspects. There's also the value of strong family ties, and learning to put the past behind in order to move forward. Drix struggles with quite a bit in this story, and he is just amazing. He has a strength of character that made me totally fall for him, and the way he treats Elle is just impeccable.
Elle was a little bit harder to get to know, but she was strong too, especially when she had to be. And when she was together with Drix, it was clear that she was happy.
Overall, I really liked this story of two young adults from different socioeconomic classes and how they meshed together in spite of their background. If I had any complaint, it would be that I think this book just scratched the surface of these two characters. It left me wanting to know more about them.
Say You'll Remember Me is everything I've come to expect from Katie McGarry --terrific young characters finding their way and learning to make difficult decisions as they enter adulthood. The main characters are always the heart of the story, and there's a sweetness to Drix and Elle that I just wanted to gobble up as I read this book, and that's why I'm rating this 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars She does it again
From reading her very first book, Katie McGarry has had me hooked, addicted, call it what you will, but if she writes it, I will read it. Her style of writing, grammar, may not always be the best, but her stories and how she weaves them makes that all fade away. Her characters leap from the page. They are real, they grow, and theirs struggles, their pain, and their joy, hits you where it needs to and hits you hard as it should.
I bought this book in hardback the day it arrived in the bookshop I was working and started to read it. Then we moved house and it has taken me three years to find & finish it. Every page has been worth the wait; nothing disappoints.
Elle and Drix come from very different worlds, socially, economically, they couldn’t be more different. Yet they recognise in each other what some can’t or won’t see.
Each has their own private and not-so-private chains and nightmares that hang heavy round their necks because for both those burdens are tied to family. Trust, betrayal, loyalty - what do they mean and with whom do they lie?
Yet again, this author has taken me on a rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows, but then she always has. I will admit to crying near the end - you’ll have to read the book to find out why.
If you have never read a Katy McGarry book, then you’re missing out on so much.
Read this one.
