Layla Robinson is not crazy. She is suffering from unrequited love. But it's time to move on. No more stalking, no more obsessive calling.

What she needs is a distraction. The blue-eyed guy she keeps seeing around campus could be a great one--only he is the new poetry professor--the married poetry professor.

Thomas Abrams is a stereotypical artist--rude, arrogant, and broody--but his glares and taunts don't scare Layla. She might be bad at poetry, but she is good at reading between the lines. Beneath his prickly façade, Thomas is lonely, and Layla wants to know why. Obsessively.

Sometimes you do get what you want. Sometimes you end up in the storage room of a bar with your professor and you kiss him. Sometimes he kisses you back like the world is ending and he will never get to kiss you again. He kisses you until you forget the years of unrequited love; you forget all the rules, and you dare to reach for something that is not yours.

This story is about Layla Robinson, who is dealing with the pain of unrequited love and trying to move on. When she sets her sights on the new poetry professor, Thomas Abrams, things take an unexpected turn. Thomas is married, rude, and brooding, but Layla isn’t afraid to get close to him—despite the consequences.
Their chemistry is electric, and even though their relationship is completely off-limits, their connection grows into something deep and complicated. Layla is flawed and relatable, trying to move past her past mistakes, while Thomas is battling his own issues. Together, they create a bond that’s messy, intense, and full of tension.
The story is full of angst, and it’s not a smooth ride. It’s raw and uncomfortable at times, but that’s what makes it stand out. The writing pulls you in and doesn’t let go. The emotions are real, and the passion between Layla and Thomas feels urgent and undeniable.
The Unrequited isn’t your typical romance. It’s gritty, real, and full of that “will-they-won’t-they” tension that keeps you hooked. If you like intense, forbidden love stories, this one is definitely worth checking out.

No Spoilers. This was a good book, but it was really back and forth for me. When the main characters were interacting it was gold. Beautifully written. Some real poetry. But when the characters were individual, it was very immature for me. The MFC was borderline bonkers, and I found her “past trauma”, a bit anticlimactic, and very overly dramatic. What made up for the book were the spicy scenes. Each scene was different, and all were well written. Some of the language wasn’t for me, but I don’t fault the author or book for that. Overall a good read. I don’t regret reading it. I probably wouldn’t read it again, but I would recommend it to people if I thought they would like it.

Loved. I actually read this book years ago, back in 2017, and since that time I've read it another 3 times I believe, so if that tells you anything about how much I loved it....SAK is my go to author for forbidden/taboo or age gap reads, as she has such a way of writing that just completely sucks you in. She also has a real talent for writing such beautifully flawed and real characters that you can't help root for them, and this was the case with Layla and Thomas. Their love story was so angtsy and heartbreakingly beautiful, and I honestly wasn't sure how I wanted or expected the story to end, but felt it was perfect. If you're looking for a beautifully written forbidden romance with flawed, real characters, that pushes your boundaries, this is for you.

This is a new Author to me. I absolutely loved Medicine Man and couldn't wait to read more of her work. This one is...hard for me to wrap my head around. I love a good deeply twisted H, and there were a lot of things I really liked about Thomas, but I couldn't get behind this one.
    *******SPOILERS*******
I HATE Layla. She was unbelievably immature. When she got the flame tattoo around her belly button I died on the inside FOR her. That's so incredibly embarrassing. I would have run for the hills right then and there. It was hard coming after Medicine Man where mental illness is covered so thoroughly to this story where it's not even really discussed that Layla has deep mental health issues. She has no sense of self worth. She encourages and allows herself to be used by Thomas. Her idea of a goodbye is anal loving. No.
    Thomas, Thomas, Thomas...
I wanted so badly to love him. I did love his sarcasm and dry humor. I love that he's a poet and intellectual. I hated everything else. He never, not once, shows any kind of love or kindness towards Layla. Basically until the Epilogue he's still trying to make his family work with his wife who he endlessly cheated on. The wife who doesn't love or want to be with him. The wife who nearly killed their child and herself!!!! Why!!! Why would he show so much hatred all the time while he uses Layla and still pine over the woman who he knows doesn't want to be with him. Hadley needed help and wanted out. He should have supported her in that and then found and embraced happiness with Layla.
End of the day, there was NO LOVE felt or found between Thomas and Layla. Honestly broke my heart because I was digging Thomas's vibe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra dark chocolate
Reviewed in Italy on January 7, 2021
This story is like chocolate, the extra bitter kind of type, the pure chocolate with real cocoa beans, no milk, surrogate or other contaminating stuff, pure, indulgent and full of flavour, a chocolate that breaks beautifully when you bite into it and you hear the crack before tasting the bitter flavour, you smell the rich intense aroma and then when you put it into your mouth it explodes bringing your taste buds to life, and just like real extra dark chocolate it has a bitter after taste but it’s not the bad type of bitterness, oh no, it’s so good that it makes you beg for more, you want to go back to your chocolate bar and gobble it all up.
This author writes beautifully her words are pure pleasure, pain and sins and they are ugly sometimes because they carry pain, fear, distress just like real life.

Is love enough to bring a soul back to life? It has to be enough, if it’s real love it has to be enough, if it hurts in the wrong way then it’s not real love, because real love hurts but it hurts in the right way, the way that brings you back to life that leads you into the light.

5.0 out of 5 stars *5 Stars! FANTASTIC!!!
Reviewed in Canada on September 29, 2017
I almost feel like I can breathe again. Reading The Unrequited was an experience that kept my stomach tied in knots, my nerves rattled, and my heart aching, breaking, and racing. I’m not quite sure what I was expecting from this book, but I can assure you that I got so much more.

I’m at a bit of a loss for what to say in this review. This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I can honestly say that it won’t be my last. I love forbidden romances. Love them! I can’t help it. I am intrigued by relationships that should never be. It’s like watching a train wreck, you know you shouldn’t watch it, but you are drawn to its destructive nature. Saffron A. Kent has written a romance that should’ve never been. It’s wrong, complicated, messy, unstable, and obsessive - and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it. In all of the story’s destructive nature, there is an underlying beauty about the author’s storytelling that can’t be denied.

I had so many conflicting emotions going on while I was immersed in this book. I would teeter back and forth between feeling sympathetic toward the characters and hating them and their actions. Unrequited love isn’t a foreign feeling for a lot of people. We’ve probably all been smitten with someone who hasn’t reciprocated our feelings, or maybe we’ve been the heartbreakers. Either way, someone’s heart inevitably gets broken. Layla’s too familiar with unrequited love, and when she comes across a new man who she feels could take her mind off of her last heartache, well, let’s just say that this one is not exactly without his own set of complications.

Layla Robinson has been in love before, but it wasn’t returned the way that she had always hoped and dreamed. She’s an interesting character. She’s not a stranger to bad behavior, in fact, one might say that she’s a magnet for bad decisions. She’s a bit of a contradiction. On one hand, she’s impulsive, brazen, outgoing, and obsessive, but on the other hand, she’s uncertain, damaged, insecure, and very lonely. She feels destined to be unloved. I couldn’t help but like her. Did I agree with all of her behavior? Oh, heck no! She made me cringe, shake my head, and curse at my Kindle, but there was something about her that I just felt for. She seemed so small, hurt, needy, and utterly lost. At times I wanted to shake some sense into her and then give her a big hug.

Thomas Abrams is everything that I love to hate and hate to love. He’s moody, dismissive, arrogant, and is not above humiliating or belittling someone. And yes, while I found his behavior to be harsh and unacceptable, I was also drawn to the broken parts of him. Believe me, he was broken inside.

Layla and Thomas were two broken pieces who found each other. Was it pretty? Was it perfect, beautiful, sugary sweet? Absolutely not. It was complicated, hurtful, needy, and lustful. As I said before, it was a relationship that should have never happened. It was an inappropriate tryst between a married professor and his student. And with everything about them that just screamed wrong, I still thought that what they had could be right for them.

The Unrequited is a beautifully written story that kept me riveted to the pages. This is one of those books that you feel right down to your toes. It’s certainly not sunshine and rainbows, this story hurts, but it hurts so good! I felt as though I was living through it all right alongside of the characters. There is just something special and unique about this book that just hit all of the marks for me. I am looking forward to reading more from Saffron A. Kent in the near future. For someone who was at a loss for words at the beginning of this review, I certainly found them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly exceptional writing - amazing in all ways !!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2017
This is a new author to me and was recommended by a friend, so I was really excited to read it. First of all I love taboo of any kind and when you read the synopsis you may think it's just another teacher /student book but how wrong you will be !!!
This book is raw, passionate and full of angst. The book was poetic, the writing impeccable and consuming, the characters perfect albeit flawed in many ways, both hurting from the past they are trying to make amends for. Both suffering from unrequited love.

Layla and Thomas are two phenomenal characters to read. They find comfort in each other but in different ways, damning the consequences their pull is like a giant magnet and is written so well I couldn't tear my eyes away. It starts off slowly building to a crescendo of feelings that slowly crawls under you skin taking over your whole body, your mind, your heart.

Thomas is an incredible man. He has so many layers that slowly get to be peeled back in this book and I loved him so much I can't express my feelings for him enough. He is arrogant, rude, standoffish, sarcastic, has a dirty mouth ( which I swooned over) but underneath it all his heart is as big as the moon, always thinking of others and trying to do the right thing by everyone. There were many times I disliked him immensely, then times I loved him so much my chest ached thinking about him. I was jealous of Layla, jealous of a fictional character; was I going crazy, this book makes your head spin with many unanswered questions at first.

Layla, is a complicated young lady that made a big mistake and has kept paying for it. She has lost the support of her friends and family and is very much alone. I liked Layla, one minute she was this needy young girl who didn't really know her own mindset and the next she was this sultry erotic sexually demanding woman who knew exactly what she wanted/ needed and boy did she take it !! A complex character to understand at first but she really did grow on me enormously and I did feel her pain but not as much as Thomas - this beautiful complex creature stole the whole book in my opinion. He is one of those characters that you know you will never ever forget. Together their chemistry was potent and extreme, sensual and erotic and made me want to climb Thomas like a monkey, it was so intense that I wanted what they had, so wonderfully captured in the pages and beautifully written.

All in all this book just blew me away and is an absolute MUST read ---

“God...what are we doing?” I pant into his shirt.
“The wrongest thing we’ve ever done,” he says, repeating my words.

    AMEN TO THAT !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Love Story - Favourite Read of 2017 💜💜💜
Reviewed in Australia on July 12, 2017
I was excited when I started this book. Thrilled to finally be reading more words from an author whose voice comes through so clearly in her writing. A voice I love. What I was not prepared for was just how much this book would play with my emotions.

During reading I make little notes and highlight quotes so I am ready to write my review. With this story. Thomas and Layla's story, I had so many notes I didn't know where to start. And as for favourite quotes - I think I highlighted half the book.

Saffron's dialogue (internal and spoken) is some of the best I have ever read. She has the ability to make you feel what the characters are experiencing. To make you hurt. Her sex scenes are better than any porn you will ever watch. Her characters are flawed and honest and their love story will grab you by the scruff and shake up everything you thought you knew about love. The darkness in her characters intrigues me and she will break your heart in the very best possible way. Gah! I loved it.

During this book I laughed -

“Let me tell you a little secret.” He lowers his voice and I find myself inching closer. “I’m not the helping kind.” He tilts his head to point toward her friends. “You should run along and play with people your own age and IQ level.”

    I cried -

It could almost be a story I’ll tell myself when I’m dying. The Harlot fell in love with the Fire-breather. It was beautiful and right. It was wrong and ugly, just like the earth beneath my feet. It was tragic and ecstatic. It was everything I’d hoped love could be.

    I ranted -

Turns out, my love is cannibalistic. Turns out, I don’t deserve to love anyone, much less have that love reciprocated.

    I swooned -

I love the way she says my name, like no one has ever said it before, like she invents me anew every time she says it. It’s f@#$ing magical, and she calls me magic.

    My panties caught fire -

If I get any wetter, I’ll leave prints on his desk, and this isn’t the time. I’m trying to be good, respectful.

And I had my heart broken -

Because I’m a girl who’s not supposed to be the love of someone’s life, not with my selfishness. I was meant to live in the shadows and secrets. I can be Thomas’ secret, for a little while, at least—until I absorb all of his pain and set him free.

It felt like the author spoke directly to me through the characters in this book. She did it in such a way that now that I am finished, I feel a little lost. I miss them and hope they are living happily ever after somewhere.

Saffron A Kent you have one of the clearest and most extraordinary voices I have ever read. I know it's only going to grow stronger with each book you write. I will leave you with a quote from Thomas himself, it matches my feelings about this book perfectly.

“I’m only going to say this once: there’s a difference between writing and creating art. Anyone can write, but only a few can create art, and for that, you need to find your own voice.
