Purchase options and add-ons
Girls mean business in a brand-new series about friendship and entrepreneurship that Katherine Applegate, Newbery Medal-winning author of The One and Only Ivan, calls “A great read!”
All the great leaders had to start somewhere. And Teresa (“Resa” for short) is starting with the lemonade stand competition her teacher assigned to the class―but making it a success is going to be a lot harder than Resa thinks.
The prize: line-skipping tickets to Adventure Central. The competition: Val, Resa's middle school nemesis. And the biggest obstacle to success: Resa's own teammates. Harriet is the class clown, Amelia is the new girl who thinks she knows best, and Didi is Resa's steadfast friend―who doesn't know the first thing about making or selling lemonade. The four of them quickly realize that the recipe for success is tough to perfect―but listening to each other is the first step. And making new friends might be the most important one...
The back of each book in this middle-grade series features tips from the Startup Squad and an inspirational profile of a girl entrepreneur!

About the Author
Nicole C. Kear grew up in New York City, where she still lives, with her husband, three firecracker kids and a ridiculously fluffy hamster. She's written lots of essays and a memoir, Now I See You, for grownups; and The Fix-It Friends series and Foreverland for kids. She also co-wrote The Startup Squad series with Brian Weisfeld. She has a bunch of fancy, boring diplomas, and one red clown nose from circus school. Seriously.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2019Bought it, read it, loved it! Good story, valuable lessons, and not only do girls start down the path of entrepreneurship they are also learning to be resilient and to overcome drama and pettiness, and work as a team. I was extra pleased to see that there was some SoMo leadership in the book (not called out by name, but in action). I might be a 42-year-old reader but the friendship developed by the four girls made me sentimental for my best friends at this age. The book is not just a tool to teach entrepreneurship, more importantly, it is an approachable, enjoyable, value-driven story that will connect with young readers and show them a way to be that is not always modeled when you are a girl. Thank you for this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2019TSUS is a charming and engaging book for all kids who are naturally creative innovators! The characters are so well-developed, smart, real and simply lovable that I was sad when the book ended as i want to see what they are up to next. The StartUp Squad is a fun read for kids who will no doubt find the lessons we in business know really matter and teaches them to make it a natural part of their ideation. My kid had 3 "businesses" he had started by middle school and this book would have been so relevant and useful to him. TSUS definitely fills a void for smart empowered young leaders!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2019A great story on entrepreneurship that demonstrates the basics of business, as well as the social skills needed for success on a level that all kids can relate. Well written with very engaging characters that will keep you interested throughout. I highly recommend this book for all kids as it teaches many valuable lessons.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2021I won my copy from a Goodreads giveaway. I have put it in my school's library for my students.
I thought the lesson of this book was good. Learning to have faith and trust with our group to do their part in the project.
Resa had a hard time letting go of control. She didn't like some people in her group and didn't want to give them a chance. She learned that other people have good ideas and value, only then were they able to be successful.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2019Loved this book. Great way to put the concepts of business into terms that young girls can understand. Both my 5 and 9 year olds were inspired to start a business after this and have since come up with a few ideas complete with business cards, budgets and loan requests to get started. It’s a fun read with valuable lessons embedded.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2019Great storyline! A lot goes into starting a business and a friendship. Also love the complete and unapologetic lack of any romantic tangents - so refreshing! This book is well-written and perfectly suited to become a series. Hopefully there are many more to come!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019My daughter's 4th grade book club selected this book as their May read. She wasn't enthralled when I told her what it was about, but she read it in one sitting and really enjoyed it. She said, "It was actually really good." She's looking forward to the second book and was inspired to open a "business" at a recent entrepreneurial event for girls.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2019I. Love. This. Book. I love everything about it. I love the story. I love the message. I love the characters. I read it with my eleven-year-old son, and now he wants to start his own business using the tips and tricks he read about in The Startup Squad. This book belongs in the hands of every middle-grade reader-boy or girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong girls!
I just finished reading The Startup Squad. As a mother of a young girl, I am excited to see four strong, unique and beautifully flawed characters that girls can relate to. It’s a book that I will proudly put on my 9-year-old daughter’s night table for her to read. Thank you for putting stories in the hands (and hearts) of girls that allow them to see their true strength and potential.
