When Jan Richardson unexpectedly lost her husband and creative partner, the singer/songwriter Garrison Doles, she did what she had long known how to do: she wrote blessings.

These were no sugar-coated blessings. They minimized none of the pain and bewilderment that came in the wake of a wrenching death. With these blessings, Jan entered, instead, into the depths of the shock, anger, and sorrow. From those depths, she has brought forth words that, with heartbreaking honesty, offer surprising comfort and stunning grace.

Those who know loss will find kinship among these pages. In these blessings that move through the anguish of rending into the unexpected shelters of solace and hope, there shimmers a light that helps us see we do not walk alone.

From her own path of grief, Jan offers a luminous, unforgettable gift that invites us to know the tenacity of hope and to recognize the presence of love that, as she writes, is "sorrow's most lasting cure."

Jan Richardson’s reflections on moments of grief is a gem. The poems are compassionate acceptance of deep tragedy, not at all flippant and without cliches. They are authentic.
    I highly recommend this volume.

This book is worth reading and sharing. Some grief seems so impossible to bear. When words fail me, this book seems to offer the comfort and sympathy many need.

If you have not gotten Jan Richardson's latest book of blessings (The Cure for Sorrow), you should. It is powerful, poignant, rich with meaning and emotion. It grabs your heart and gives you a gentle, all-encompassing embrace at the same time. It can be a beautiful gift for the widowed, whether newly or not so new. Or it can be for you, dear one, to remember than pain can come from many different places, every day, and get under our skin and affect us when we least expect it. I am aware as I process the Las Vegas shooting (I am in California and had friends at at concert who survived) that I am experiencing old grief and overwhelming grief at the state of our country and our dialogue. The love and the caring that has emerged from the stories of the ones who survived and the companions of those who didn't, in the midst of such a horrific event, is like the waves crashing on a ragged shore, both comforting and disturbing. I am so grateful that Jan has written this book, bared her soul and offered up these blessings that, as she says, are timeless. Buy two...or more. You won't regret a moment.

A friend who's a spiritual director recommended this book to me recently when I lost my beloved mother. I have been awed by the honesty, beauty, lyricism and power of Jan Richardson's poetic "blessings." While I have also found solace in other poems related to grief and loss, this profound collection is the one that takes my breath away again and again. I have wept with it, prayed with it, found hope in it. I've already recommended it to several friends. Jan Richardson unexpectedly lost her beloved husband, and should my husband predecease me someday, I'm sure I'll again find comfort in this book. But love is love, and grief is grief, and I highly recommend this book to anyone walking through painful loss of whatever kind.

Such a beautiful and moving book of poetry! I will recommend this and send this book over and over again. It doesn't just cover death and dying. It addresses many different types of losses that all of us go through in a lifetime! Love this book so much that I've already gone back to order two other books by the same author. Her insight into grief is personal and deep! Grateful for her voice and her pen.

After my husband died, a dear friend gave this book to me. A friend of hers had given her the book after her own husband had died. I cannot recommend this book more highly. It continues to give me comfort and assurance as I find my way during the days, weeks, and years.
Don't let the title (Blessings...) throw you off; it's not religious, just incredibly kind and true. Not a self help book in any way. It's the kind of writing you can read a little at a time, picking it up as you're ready.
