Socialism: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) 2nd Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
This Very Short Introduction considers the major theories in socialism, and explores its historical evolution from the French Revolution to the present day. Michael Newman argues that socialism has always been a diverse doctrine, while nevertheless containing a central core of interconnected values and goals: a critique of capitalism; an optimistic view of human beings; and the belief that it is possible to establish societies based on egalitarianism, social solidarity, and co-operation. In this new edition, he draws on case studies such as Cuba, Sweden, and Bolivia, to consider attempts to implement socialism in practice, before discussing New Left challenges to conventional notions of socialism on such questions as feminism, climate change, and direct action. Rejecting the widespread view that socialism is an out-dated doctrine, Newman argues that it remains ultimately relevant in today's world.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021The author really did a great job describing socialism with respect to different countries. It's a real short history lesson.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024A lot of facts, history, some opinion, little to take away. I appreciated some of the history. The author's occasional use of "For" to begin a sentence, with no obvious grammatical role in the sentence, was a welcome reminder of Christopher Smart's "Juilate Agno" ("For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry"), c. 1760. Read that one if you haven't, at least the part about Jeoffry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable history of socialism
I found this to be a very interesting and readable history of socialism in both theory and practise.
Very little assumed knowledge and the author does an exceptional job of starting from scratch and working through to present day.
Head and shoulders above any of the other VSI books I’ve read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Read to see if I was backing the right party
I am indeed backing the correct party. I have been looking in to politics to see if my conservative views hold up. Upon reading this book I can say that they do. It started ok but then meandered through regimes and ideologies that showed nothing. I found it a slog to plough through even though it is only a relatively short book. If you are a socialist I'll think this would be an ideal book. As I'm not, it did nothing to dissuade me of my view, or give a good alternative to it.
