I've been reading this series to my 8-year old after we were recommended it by a co-worker's kid. I've read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi both growing up and as an adult and I've been very pleased with the series.

This particular entry gives a lot of background and context for the Nightwing dragons and Darkstalker, one of the major characters of the second series of books. I'd recommend reading it either before or after the second story arc. We read it before and it gave us a pretty good idea of who Darkstalker was and what he was capable of, and I don't think it spoils much if you start with this one before Jade Moutain.

Like many of the other books in the series, there are some scenes that are unsettling and/or violent, so keep that in mind if you or your child want to avoid that kind of content. Near the end of the book there's one scene in particular.

I expected the series to just be a fun adventure series about a world full of dragons, and while it is that it also handles a lot of complicated and mature subject matter in a way that is both digestible to children and doesn't talk down to them. This book in particular goes pretty hard in that direction. While it's entertaining and frequently funny, it's also very sad and very dark at times. Darkstalker is a complicated and tragic character who serves as a surprisingly nuanced narrative about the nature of evil and what unchecked power can do to a person.

It's pretty good. I wouldn't start here, but it's a very satisfying side-story that ties in nicely with the rest of the series.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

I did not think I would like this book or even care about anyone. WOW was I wrong, again.

I highly recommend reading this after books 6-10, as it won't spoil anything that is brought up in the second series.  Darkstalker was a villain with good intentions, which made him really, really bad.  I don't think I ever realized how young he was when he did all the things that he did, but he was maybe seven or eight.  He had just become a full grown dragon, and he plummeted morally.

Seeing his backstory explains so much why he behaved and thought the way he did.  Growing up in a family with parents always fighting and screaming at one another, with a sister considered too odd, and people underestimating him or steering clear made his life lonely and dark, until Clearsight.  Despite both Clearsight and Darkstalker being able to see the future, Clearsight being able to see every future, this book proved just how much that power can fail you.  Clearsight did everything she could to steer them away from a bloody and dark future, and it failed.

There are so many lessons and deep concepts tossed around in this book and left up to the reader to think about that, having read this nearly two weeks ago, I delayed writing a review so that I could puzzle out the "what ifs" and my feelings on Darkstalker as a whole even more.

It genuinely broke my heart at the end when either Clearsight or Fathom read over Darkstalker's scroll to see the little spells he wrote for his family.  Blankets to keep his mom perfectly warm.  Paints for his sister than never ran out.  Those little things that were so utterly sweet and loving, and not evil.  Then for them to read the spells literally in between the lines that were for tormenting classmates, killing IceWings, and other horrific acts.  I didn't see the shift.  Was there a shift?  Was Darkstalker always a bad guy?  Was it because of his upbringing or his arrogance?  Or did something change him very quickly in his short life?

This book, too, pulls into question the concept brought up in books 6-10 where one of the characters argues that using animus magic doesn't leech your soul, but using the magic without a care for morality does destroy your soul.  It follows the concept that the more evil or bad things you do, the less your conscience twinges or tells you "Don't do that."  The more you rationalize that what you are doing is OK, no matter what.

I'm so happy that Fathom's life worked out.  I can't even imagine the PTSD he suffers from Albatross's mass murders or seeing his beloved Indigo dying in his arms.  I like that at the end of the book, he's shown to still spook from certain things, which makes sense.  He went through a nightmare and now has to deal with those memories for the rest of his life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot help but hope that Tui Sutherland will write more Legends novels.

My 10 year old has read the entire Wings of Fire series, so we were very excited to discover this special edition! When it arrived on the Kindle I didn't see him for the rest of the day. He tells me that you don't have to have read the main series to jump right into this special edition book and enjoy it, but he also says the book does make a little more sense if you've already read the series. The main star of the book is Darkstalker, who is featured in the rest of the series as one of the main villains. This is his backstory which explains how he starts out good and ends up on the dark side.

I haven't read the series myself, but I am a big fan of encouraging kids to read for the sake of reading. I also encourage some classics and high brow literature, but there should also be room for some fun books! This series has given my children plenty of ideas to chew on/think about it, so it's not just fluff. The books are, however, easy/enjoyable/funny reads. Before book nine came out earlier this year my then 9 year old spent the week rereading books one through eight - that should tell you something about what a fantastic and engaging author this is.

Two thumbs up for a series that encourages a love of reading in my son, and this new add on to the series that fits in well. I feel like sometimes special editions are only *very* loosely tied to the series and are really just a grab at capitalizing on the success of the main books. This book, however, keeps you feeling engaged with characters you already know and love.

This series as a whole has been such a large part of my life for many years, and this was one of the books that I've had on my list for a long time. The way she has always been able to tell these amazing stories and give her dragon so much personality while also making sure that this is book you never want to put down. All the small details that you miss the first time around. These books are as great of a read the 5th time as they are the first time you flip a page. Very thorough. <3

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK IN THE SERIES

HANDS DOWN, the best Wings of Fire book. A standout from the series.

A MUST READ.

It has a mix of everything, drama, complex moral developments from multiple characters, gut wrenching revelations and all of that is packed in one book. The most heartbreaking ending to a Wings of Fire book so far.

In my opinion the best way to approach this book is read all books 1-8 (ending with Escaping Peril) -> Darkstalker -> Winglet #4 -> Continue with Talons of Power.

I'd argue to truly grasp the depth of this book, it's geared towards more of an older teen / young adult audience. Brilliant Storytelling. 10/10

This is one of the best in the series. Just incredible! I recommend you to read this after book 8: Escaping Peril. Tui did a great job and the characters were so good. Just a great balance for mystery, thriller and romance!
