I adore this book. A very original concept with gorgeous illustrations, great scientific information, and a poignant message about the connectedness of all life. It works on many levels and for many ages. At almost 5 years old it was a little bit of a stretch for my son to understand but he got it and I am sure this is a book we will return to for many years to come. Its beautifully done and inspired great conversations, deepening my son's factual understanding of evolution and sense of wonder at life.

Amazed at how simply this book portrays the huge message that all lifeforms are connected on a basic level. The book takes children through a journey through the development of a human being, asking children to guess as to what creature is taking shape (it has webbed feet, is it a duck?). At the end of the book, the author provides interesting facts about evolution that you can teach to your children (and learn yourself).

I doubt that any child (or adult for that matter) can figure out what is supposed to be happening from the illustrations. The point of the book, that all vertebrates and all life are related is a good one, but it would be hard to tell from the blobs of color on the pages. It would take a lot of explaining to get from the illustrations to developing embryos. The idea is good, and perhaps this presentation of it could work for someone, but it didn't do much for me.

This is one of those rare books that is illuminating for both a 5-year-old child and his 40-year-old mother. My son has recently started asking questions related to evolution, like "where did the first person come from?", and I'm really glad that I came across this gorgeous book. It helps us both to think deeply and marvel at life.
