Bestselling author Georgette Heyer, the Queen of Regency Romance, introduces the most daring and dashing hero of all.

"Mad Nicholas" to his friends, "Scourge of Spain" to his enemies, Sir Nicholas Beauvallet is one of Queen Elizabeth's most dashing buccaneers and has never been known to resist a challenge.

When Beauvallet captures the galleon carrying Doña Dominica de Rada y Sylvan and her father, he vows to return them safely to the shores of Spain. But he has no sooner done so than he proposes a venture more reckless than any of his exploits on the high seas―he will return to Spain, where there's a price on his head, and claim Dominica as his bride...

Praise for Georgette Heyer and Beauvallet:

"Cinematographic with escapes, kidnapping, galloping sword play, and a breathless elopement."―The Times Literary Supplement

"Georgette Heyer was one of the great protagonists of the historical novel in the post-war golden age of the form. Her regency romances are delightful light reading, and her historical novels such as The Spanish Bride and An Infamous Army demonstrate how fiction and history can work together to make a valuable literary form."―Philippa Gregory, New York Times bestselling author

Beauvallet is set in 1586 during the reign of Elizabeth I. This is just one way it differs from Heyer's usual Regency era tales, another being that it's about a hero traveling into enemy territory to claim his love.

Having won a sea battle with a Spanish galleon, Sir Nicholas Beauvallet finds that Don Manuel de Rada y Sylva, the late governor of Santiago, is aboard with his daughter Dona Dominica. Don Manuel is ailing and if he goes with the vanquished Spanish crew on the long boat, he may have to wait months for another ship to take him to Spain, so Nicholas promises that he will deliver the two there himself. En route he falls for the feisty and independent-minded Dominica, who is initially aloof but gradually comes to love him as well. When Nick pledges that he will come into Spain before the year is out in order to claim her, she wants to believe him but doubts that even Mad Nicholas would be mad enough to do such a thing.

Nick can seem boastful but I see it more as certainty and confidence in his own abilities - he has never failed to achieve whatever feat he set out to accomplish. His self-confidence is hardly surprising, he learned his craft from Sir Francis Drake as part of that noteworthy's expedition around the world and he's had many successful ventures of his own since then. He's obviously brave, he's skilled with a sword and fluent in a number of languages. But more than that, he's audacious and can think on his feet. He's a master at using deception and charm to lull his opponents into complacency and then seizing on whatever opportunities present themselves. His men trust his "madness" because it has been profitable for them and they know from experience that he will never lead them into disaster. As his ship's Master says, he is "bird-eyed for opportunity, and blind to danger, and he laughs his way out of every peril..." He succeeds because he dares and because, like the deceptions achieved by Robin and Prue in the Masqueraders and Kit in False Colors, what Nick does is unexpected and, therefore, it's unlooked for.

Dominica took a little warming to because she was so obviously drawn to Nick even while she was still giving him the cold shoulder. Some of this was no doubt pride but some of it was circumspection, as when she replied in the negative when her father asked her opinion of Beauvallet, remembering how eager she had always been to hear of his exploits. She is in a pitiable position: having grown up in the relative freedom of Santiago's more relaxed social customs, her independent spirit will find no welcome in Spain where stifling rules and etiquette prevail for women. Even more dangerous are the Lutheran leanings she has secretly acquired, which place her at mortal risk should they become known in Spain where the Inquisition is in full swing.

To secure the fake papers he'll need to travel into Spain Nick seeks the aid of a distant French cousin, an old friend who accompanied Nick on his European ramblings in younger years. Nick gets what he needs but his typical good fortune leads him to something even better - after besting a Frenchman who was trying to steal his horse near the Spanish frontier, he discovers the man was the Chevalier de Guise, a courier for the powerful de Guise family who carries a secret, encrypted message to King Phillip in Spain. Nick doesn't hesitate to adopt the identity, papers and mission of the dead man, and they're off!

Dominica shows her own mettle and wits in holding off her ruthless aunt and guardian, who plans to marry her son to Dominica's extensive fortune, but her despair and feeling of aloneness are almost palpable before Nick shows up. At the same time, her fears about actually placing her life and future into Nick's hands and taking that irreversible plunge into a strange new world are realistic and understandable.

Nick and Dominica have some nail-biting adventures, alone and together, before their final nick-of-time escape. An entertaining tale from start to finish, with Nick's enterprising servant Joshua Dimmock providing invaluable support and Joshua's running commentary on his and Mad Nick's antics providing comic relief.

What a fun book. In the chronology of Georgette Heyer's many novels, this comes fairly early. And the period is quite different from the bulk of her work -- it's during the 16th century, with lots of adventure at sea. The character of Beauvallet is the very definition of swashbuckler. His experience and good fortune as a privateer are legendary, and it appears that his men are so devoted that they'd follow him through the gates of hell. Lots of roguish, dashing behavior, with a bit of the dandy here and there.

His daring reaches its zenith when he travels incognito into the heart of hostile Spain to retrieve the woman he fell in love with on the high seas. Dona Dominica is a little flat -- somewhat stereotyped as the petite, ebony-haired, and easily incensed Spanish beauty. Beauvallet's companion Joshua, a man of subtle wit and enormous devotion to his lord, provides great narration here and there with a somewhat (but not totally) dispassionate voice. Nicholas Beauvallet's daring and charisma make this book a unique and rousing adventure.

This book is riveting! A gorgeous, breathtaking, at times hilarious adventure and love story you won't be able to put down. In other words, it's a Georgette Heyer novel.

I’m just reading through all of Georgette Heyer’s books for the first time, having assumed they were fluffy romance novels all my life. Boy was I wrong. They’re so much more than romances they’re in a class by themselves — full of endearing characters, sparkling, laugh-out-loud dialogue, adventure and fascinating history. The Regencies are so much fun, I assumed her other historical novels would be somehow less, and I was wrong about that too. Beauvallet and Simon the Coldheart have turned out to be two of my favorites. Not as much humor as the regencies but still very witty, and with an extra helping of swashbuckling adventure and unforgettable heroes. Be still my heart. All her books would be incredible movies, and it must be one of the world’s enduring mysteries that they haven’t been making and remaking them into movies for decades. Nobody writes such scintillating, ingeniously-plotted stories these days. I’m only grateful that there are so many of them to read and re-read forever.

I have so far read a number of Heyer’s novels and enjoyed them all , however Beauvallet is in a different league. A beautiful adventure story taking place mainly on the high seas and in Spain. The adventures of el Beauvallet will keep you on the edge of your seat , biting your nails or breathless , or whatever emotions you get when the plot gets so intense .I felt sometimes that I needed to stop and take my breath worrying what would happen next , El Beauvallet getting himself out of every intricate situation he finds himself in, holding the reader in anticipation of what might come next. The story is engaging from the first chapter until the last and does not drag at all. The type of story that flutter hearts and make you smile. By the end of the story you’ll have fallen in love with el Beauvallet. All the other characters are written well and contribute to make the story intriguing.I would have loved to know what happened next to Doña Beatriz. 👏👏👏

For me, it is not just the romance, it is the hilarious situations and the way the characters handle them, with a great sense of humour that makes the book entertaining and which is why I read Georgette Heyer.
Beauvallet is well-written, good plot, a lot of adventure but nothing quite as hilarious like the 'outrageous highway holdup' in 'Convenient Marriage', or the 'burgalry to look for the missing ring' in 'talisman Ring'.

A pirate adventure tale had not been on my radar…until I came across this book.

I gave it a chance because Heyer wrote it. Looking back, I am more than glad I gave it a chance.

Compared with other Heyer books I’ve read: stronger than some, weaker than others.

An enjoyable Heyer read. The hero is a swashbuckling character contemporary with Francis Drake. As well as being a well crafted romance, it gives an insight into Elizabethan England and the Spain of Philip. Language as usual is fantastic, educative and expressive and the story, though being relatively short is densely written so it feels like a longer book. A well with read

Disappointed, great for those who love Harlequin stuff. Nice feel for period detail but not for me. Stick to better writers like Patrick O'Brian or period authors like Austen.

I read about three quarters of this book. It really was not believable to me. Added to that there sad a part of a ship referred to as a companion when the correct word is companionway. I even found a copy of the book because I thought perhaps the wrong word was used only in the ebook. Nope, it was published that way multiple times originally. And tildes were omitted on the n in Dona. Plus there were several references to Dona Domenica's little hands. Why? Who cares that they were little. Basically, this book was a waste of my time.
