Purchase options and add-ons
New York Times bestselling author Tracey Baptiste and acclaimed illustrator Amber Ren take readers on a fun, creepy, storytime-ready romp through a forest filled with creatures from Caribbean folklore.
I’m looking for a jumbie, I’m going to find a scary one.
But Mama says jumbies exist only in stories. So Naya sets out on a nighttime adventure to find out for herself.
No such thing, say the friends she makes along the way.
But Naya is sure that jumbies are real. Some have big mouths. Or thick fur. Or glowing skin. Or sharp teeth. Kind of like her new friends.…
Looking for a Jumbie is a gentle, bouncy, and creepily fun read-aloud inspired by traditional Caribbean tales.

Review
"A vibrant and entertaining tale filled with mythical creatures from Caribbean stories that is perfect for Halloween and year-round." — School Library Journal
"The illustrations are colorful and dreamlike, and Ren pays special attention to accentuating the features of characters. A nice addition to offerings on being afraid of the dark, monsters, or nighttime adventures." — Booklist

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024My son is absolutely obsessed with this book! The engaging storyline and fun characters keep him entertained for hours. It’s become a favorite in our house, and I love seeing how excited he gets every time we read it together. Highly recommend for young readers!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2023Read this with my 8-year old granddaughter. She enjoyed reading it to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 20224.5 yr old loves this book, she loves the little girl and exploring, and learning that not everything that’s supposed to be scary actually is if she’s brave
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2023My almost-2-year-old loves pointing out the jumbies and bouncing along to the “looking for a jumbie” phrase. I love the theme of exploration (though we’ll talk about wandering from home at night) and the book has absolutely gorgeous, richly saturated pictures to explore.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2022Looking for a Jumbie is reminiscent of the classics Going on a Bear Hunt and Where the Wild Things Are but also completely unique. The language flows and rolls and the use of repetition makes it an extra fun re-read for kids.
In addition to being a great story time book, the authors note at the beginning help set the stage and can make for a launching off point for an older child to begin learning about Caribbean folk tales.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2022I bought four highly rated books for my nephew’s fourth birthday and this is reportedly his favorite! Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughters loves it
My daughter loves this book, it’s her favourite. If it were out to her we would read it every night. She sees herself as the main character. She can’t wait for the next one.
