The first mystery book in a rollicking new historical cozy series! When Lady Adelaide's dinner party is visited by lady death, she'll have to partner with the irksome spirit of her dead husband to crack the case…

"A lively debut filled with local color, red herrings, both sprightly and spritely characters, a smidgen of social commentary, and a climactic surprise."―Kirkus Reviews

A delightful English cozy series begins in August 1924. Lady Adelaide Compton has recently (and satisfactorily) interred her husband, Major Rupert Charles Cressleigh Compton, hero of the Somme, in the family vault in the village churchyard.

Rupert died by smashing his Hispano-Suiza on a Cotswold country road while carrying a French mademoiselle in the passenger seat. With the house now Addie's, needed improvements in hand, and a weekend house party underway, how inconvenient of Rupert to turn up! Not in the flesh, but in―actually, as a―spirit. Rupert has to perform a few good deeds before becoming welcomed to heaven―or, more likely, thinks Addie, to hell.

Before Addie can convince herself she's not completely lost her mind, a murder disrupts her careful seating arrangement. Which of her twelve houseguests is a killer? Her mother, the formidable Dowager Marchioness of Broughton? Her sister Cecilia, the born-again vegetarian? Her childhood friend and potential lover, Lord Lucas Waring? Rupert has a solid alibi as a ghost and an urge to detect. A debaucher in life and an annoyance in death, Addie knows she can't leave Rupert to solve the murders of her sweet old gardener and a naked neighbor by himself.

Enter Inspector Devenand Hunter from the Yard, an Anglo-Indian who is not going to let some barmy society beauty witnessed talking to herself derail his investigation. Something very peculiar is afoot at Compton Court and he's going to get to the bottom of it―or go as mad as its mistress trying.

I loved this book. It is very witty and fun to read. The plot is well thought out and easy to read.

This is a fun read. The characters are charming and fun. Compared to cozy mysteries written in the era in which this story is set, I’d have to rate it a 3, but as a contemporary book set in that era, I’d have to give it a 4. There are so many bad, silly, and poorly written cozies now, that one like this can be considered a find! I enjoyed it, and would think that many other readers would, also.

Nice pacing, interesting characters, and a completed story within a promising series. The story line caught me quickly and the book is a nice length. The long list of characters in the beginning almost threw me. A reference might be nice, but I don’t want to feel I NEED one. I did not, so all is well.

Four stars minus. This book is the first in a series of historic 1920’s cozy mysteries featuring Lady Adelaide Compton as the amateur detective. Lady Adelaide is young, wealthy and a recent widow. Her dead husband was a cad and in an unusual twist, he is only mostly dead. Lady Adelaide is hosting a house party weekend at her home in the English countryside when her ghostly husband pops up. Not surprisingly, he is only visible and audible to Lady Adelaide. The weekend is barely underway when the first body is discovered. The first book in a series requires extra effort by the author since this book must set the stage, introduce the continuing characters, and tell a story that is entertaining so that the reader will want to buy the next book. Our author did a good job. The pacing is brisk, and the reader does not get bogged down in too much introductory material. There are murders, but no gory details. The language is mild. The list of continuing characters is short, but they have potential- especially Inspector Devenand Hunter from Scotland Yard. The biggest weakness is a lack of complexity and richness. Perhaps it never aspired to more. It’s fine, it’s light, it’s quick, it’s inexpensive, and it’s forgettable. Sometimes that is exactly what you want to read.

If anyone is trying to decide whether to jump into this series, go for it! The characters and dialogue are a delight, the plots lively and enticing, throughout the series. I wanted more-more-more when I'd finished the last one. This is the most fun I've had in a long time, in historical mysteries.

It was kind of like a "Topper" takeoff. So parts were fun ... but way too many characters to track back and forth. I did enjoy parts, but I was glad when it I was done. Not seeking out the next in the series.

This was a different kind of ghost story where the deceased ex husband was able to gather information and move items. I look forward to reading more in the series.

If you like a good mystery that is light reading and a time frame from the 1920 - 30's, then this book is for you. It is the author's first and I am really looking forward to the next one to see how our heroine gets on now that she is an independent widow. I hope the next book is not one that is a year in the making.
