About the author
Zoë Kim stumbled upon voluntary simplicity and minimalism 9 years ago through Zero Waste Home. She's a regular mom of four who found herself stressed and exhausted, spending more time doing things with her stuff than doing things with her family. It was in that stress and exhaustion that her desire to live lighter was born. As she shed her layers of possessions she began to see the real cost of her stuff—and it was way overpriced!
Zoë Kim is the creator of Raising Simple, a website that inspires families
to own fewer possessions to make room for what matters most.
She is passionate about helping other families let go of what’s weighing
them down so they can find and experience the freedom in owning less.
She lives outside Atlanta with her family.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2017Love and highly recommend... exactly the help so many of us need.
Zoë Kim is a voice of calm and reason to help guide you through your journey to a saner, happier life. Among the books I've read on this topic, this one is the most helpful. The author's writing style is clear and friendly, totally non-judgmental, and naturally inspiring. You easily sense that she's speaking from her heart and personal experience. Rather than press readers to follow her precise path, she provides you with useful questions and practical tools to discover what you need to know to find your own best path forward.
There's an abundance of practical suggestions and thoughtful approaches here, all clearly laid out and presented in a logical order. This book will surely inspire many people to give minimalism a sincere try. And, I believe most will have a realistic hope of succeeding and maintaining a level of "less" that improves their family's lives because of the thoughtful guidance about the emotional aspects of making the transformation within yourself and within a family.
I highly recommend this book if you truly want a calmer life, one that allows you to focus on what means most to you. Families will find guidance in this book that I've not seen elsewhere, and even if you don't have a young family, the book is extremely helpful and definitely a worthy use of your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2020For those who are looking into living a more minimalistic life or creating a more minimalistic home, this book is helpful in guiding you in finding your “why”, helping you to draw out what it is that you value and are seeking for in your life and home and provides a helpful step-by-step, room-by-room guide as to how to accomplish that!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2022Not really looking to go minimalist but wanted some tips on downsizing and decluttering. This book is very helpful. It changed the way I look at my stuff and is really making it easier to get rid of the excess. Some of the tips really work great too. Love the closet/hanger idea for downsizing clothing. Winter is almost over so it won't work for this season but I plan to use it for spring/summer. I have been trying to declutter for months now and get stuck on certain items/areas and this book really helped break through those mental blocks. Definitely recommend reading it whether or not you want to go minimalist or just need to declutter.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020This book felt like cotton candy fluff. There's some good stuff here, but it lacks the concrete, practical advice that I've enjoyed in other books. It's a fast read, which I appreciate. It's definitely geared to middle class families. I personally got more out of books like The House that Cleans Itself by Mindy Starns Clark and FLYlady website by Marla Cilley.
It's not a bad book. It just wasn't the best option for me. Look forward to reading more books about minimalism by Joshua Becker and maybe Joshua Fields Millburn ans Ryan Nicodemus.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2018This is a great book. I needed to pare down a lot of items in our home and the idea of minimalism attracted me, but I knew I could never be the type of person who owned one pair of shoes and lived out of a backpack. This book makes it clear that minimalism is NOT about 'living as miserably as you can with the least amount of items' (paraphrased) but rather, keeping only the items in your life that create value. From the author's perspective, that means whether you own one or twenty of a similar item, as long as it's adding value it's fine. This viewpoint allowed me to feel the freedom to practice mimimalism in my own way, donating bags and bags of items while not feeling guilty for keeping the items I still like and value.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2017It was helpful to get me started. A little la-de-da in spots but you just roll your eyes and take from it what you can use. Within several days I had gotten rid of 13 bags of stuff from my bedroom and I have been dilligent about not bringing new things in.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2023This wasn’t a hard read and was laid out well. It does give some insight as to how to live a simpler life! Very motivational which is what I was looking for.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018This book is such an easy read. It won't be earth shattering by any means. If you are practicing minimalism already or have spend a bit of time on blogs and searching the Internet- much of what this book shares, you'll have already read about. But its useful anyway because it pieces out the different areas of your life you might be looking to simplify and gives you real and practical tips to approach them. Its a good motivator or if you are brand new to minimalism- a great starting off point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good and Simple
Simple concepts. No major revelation but some good advice. She does give a bit of insight on decluttering a few areas I had not thought of as I walk through my house.
