Beloved and bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with the spellbinding story of two young people with devastating pasts who embark on a passionate, intriguing journey to discover the lessons of life, love, trust—and above all, the healing power that only truth can bring.

Sky, a senior in high school, meets Dean Holder, a guy with a promiscuous reputation that rivals her own. From their very first encounter, he terrifies and captivates her. I stand up and look down at the bed, holding my breath in fear of the sounds that are escalating from deep within my throat.

I will not cry.

I will not cry.

Slowly sinking to my knees, I place my hands on the edge of the bed and run my fingers over the yellow stars poured across the deep blue background of the comforter. I stare at the stars until they begin to blur from the tears that are clouding my vision.

I squeeze my eyes shut and bury my head into the bed, grabbing fistfuls of the blanket. My shoulders begin to shake as the sobs I’ve been trying to contain violently break out of me. With one swift movement, I stand up, scream, and rip the blanket off the bed, throwing it across the room.

I ball my fists and frantically look around for something else to throw. I grab the pillows off the bed and chuck them at the reflection in the mirror of the girl I no longer know. I watch as the girl in the mirror stares back at me, sobbing pathetically. The weakness in her tears infuriates me. We begin to run toward each other until our fists collide against the glass, smashing the mirror. I watch as she falls into a million shiny pieces onto the carpet.

I grip the edges of the dresser and push it sideways, letting out another scream that has been pent up for way too long. When the dresser comes to rest on its back, I rip open the drawers and throw the contents across the room, spinning and throwing and kicking at everything in my path. I grab at the sheer blue curtain panels and yank them until the rod snaps and the curtains fall around me. I reach over to the boxes piled high in the corner, and without even knowing what’s inside, I take the top one and throw it against the wall with as much force as my five-foot, three-inch frame can muster.

“I hate you!” I cry. “I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!”

I’m throwing whatever I can find in front of me at whatever else I can find in front of me. Every time I open my mouth to scream, I taste the salt from the tears that are streaming down my cheeks.

Holder’s arms suddenly engulf me from behind and grip me so tightly I become immobile. I jerk and toss and scream some more until my actions are no longer thought out. They’re just reactions.

“Stop,” he says calmly against my ear, unwilling to release me. I hear him, but I pretend not to. Or I just don’t care. I continue to struggle against his grasp but he only tightens his grip.

“Don’t touch me!” I yell at the top of my lungs, clawing at his arms. Again, it doesn’t faze him.

Don’t touch me. Please, please, please.

The small voice echoes in my mind and I immediately become limp in his arms. I become weaker as my tears grow stronger, consuming me. I become nothing more than a vessel for the tears that won’t stop shedding.

I am weak, and I’m letting
him win.

Holder loosens his grip around me and places his hands on my shoulders, then turns me around to face him. I can’t even look at him. I melt against his chest from exhaustion and defeat, taking in fistfuls of his shirt as I sob, my cheek pressed against his heart. He places his hand on the back of my head and lowers his mouth to my ear.

“Sky.” His voice is steady and unaffected. “You need to leave. Now.”

“Whatever this is, I don’t want to analyze it. I don’t want you analyzing it either, okay? Let’s just be grateful I finally found you.”
I laugh at his last sentence. “You say that like you’ve been looking for me.”
He furrows his brows together and places his hands on the sides of my head, tilting my face up to his. “I’ve been looking for you my whole damn life.”

Wow! After that one I definitely need a "chapter break"! Usually when I love a book I find it easy to write a review because I can just gush about everything I loved, but with this book it’s because of the fact that I loved it so much that I am having trouble reviewing it. I know that whatever I come up with here will never do the book justice, I don’t think I have the appropriate words in my vocabulary to appropriately express how awesome this book was. Colleen Hoover never ceases to amaze me, I’ve loved all of her books, her unique storylines and endearing characters will suck you in, make your heart race and leave you breathless. This book was no exception, it was sweet, funny, poignant, heartbreaking and heartwarming. It’ll definitely hit you right in the feels and at times weigh heavily on your heart. The book dealt with some very heavy topics that’ll break your heart over and over, but there was just enough humor injected at just the right moments to help balance it out. It truly was a wonderful book about losing yourself and discovering the strength to find yourself again.

So I can’t really say too much about what the story is about because there are a lot of surprises that I wouldn’t want to spoil. There were some things I started to piece together as I went along but there were a few things that totally blindsided me. Basically we have Sky who is your pretty typical seventeen year old girl in that she loves hanging with her friend Six, is thinking about college and sneaking boys into her room to make out. At the same time she is pretty atypical because she’s lived a very sheltered life with no access to technology (no TV, no phone, no internet) and has been homeschooled up until her senior year of high school where she begged to finally go to public school. She also has trouble feeling anything with any of the boys she sneaks in to her room. That is until she sets her eyes on Dean Holder, rumored bad boy and completely hot. Their first meeting is equal parts thrilling and terrifying as his intensity is a little overwhelming. But she realizes that he makes her feel things she’s never felt before and that there is a lot more to Holder than it seems. As things develop between them, secrets from Sky’s past begin to come to light and there’s a major bombshell that is dropped that will shake her existence to its core.

“Let me inform you of something,” he says in a low voice. “The moment my lips touch yours, it will be your first kiss. Because if you’ve never felt anything when someone’s kissed you, then no one’s ever really kissed you. Not the way I plan on kissing you.”

Holder was AMAZING! He was seriously intense but incredibly sweet and had a heart of gold. He will make you swoon over and over. As you unravel the mystery surrounding him and his past, your heart will break. But the way he was there to help and protect Sky as her world crumbled, was so awesome. I loved their connection, it was so deep and emotional and I don’t think I’ve ever read a love scene that was more heartbreaking than their first time but at the same time so incredibly powerful. And holy wow, they definitely had the hottest non-kiss in the history of non-kisses. You have to read it to see what I mean! I also loved the banter and sarcasm between the two, his ego-deflating texts to Sky were my favorite.

“You don’t deserve words, Sky. You deserve actions.”

Sky was pretty incredible too. I loved experiencing the story through her eyes. I was right there with her so many times as she reacted to all of the craziness that was being thrown at her. I felt the same confusion and despair and got the same butterflies she did when Holder would do something amazing. I admired her strength throughout all of this, it would have been very easy for her to crumble under the circumstances but she was so strong and I know Holder said this to her a few times, but I was so proud of her.

“I live you, Sky,” he says against my lips. “I live you so much.”

I could ramble on and on about the book, but like I said earlier I know that I’m nowhere near doing it justice. This is a book that you really just need to read and experience for yourself. As with any of Colleen Hoover’s books, every word is so purposeful that you really have to sit back and take it all in. You’re going to want to read it fast to find out what happens next, but trust me that this is one that should be savored! It’ll find its way into your heart and will be one that you’ll think of again and again. This is a MUST read!

“F all the firsts, Sky. The only thing that matters to me with you are the forevers.”

Before I start this out I'd like to warn you it's going to be long, heartfelt, and very emotional. I first read Colleen's work (Slammed and Point of Retreat) last summer at my Dad's. I had just been really getting back into reading then and they definitely were a part of starting my blog and joining the reading community online. I loved them so, so much and her writing blew me away but with Hopeless I know for a fact I can't even find the words to describe how truly amazing this work of art is. It definitely shot Colleen up my list of authors to the tippy top with Ellen Hopkins. Reading is usually an escape for me but sometimes I'll find a rare book that I take something from, usually a lesson or piece of advice that helps me in life and gives me hope. Contrary to this books title it left me the opposite, full of hope. I've been reading almost nothing but NA Contemporary lately and it has gotten really old but Hopeless was so unique and different. It was a refreshing read and just what I needed.

I fell in love with Sky the minute she let me into her head, she is so much like me and so different at the same time. I promise you if she was real I'd be her best friend, her outlook on life and others around her is amazing. The fact that she doesn't let stupid bashing high school drama heads get to her and the fact that she is herself and doesn't care what others think is admirable to say the least. I love her relationship with her best friend Six, who is equally amazing. The banter between them and easy going humor filled relationship is so perfect, it was an element in this book that made me love it so much more. It's been said a million times and it will be said a million more, Dean Holder is one hot hunk of man that is hard not to love. Every girl says Holder is hers but really he's Sky and I envy her but at the same time I'm so happy she found him. The more I read these books the higher my expectation of my future husband gets. His feelings for Sky and how passionate he is about everything in his life is awesome for lack of a better word. He was so fun to get to know and I'm excited to see more of him in Losing Hope, the companion to Hopeless. To explain what goes on in this book is to give it all away, so I can't do that. If anyone were to talk about this book in detail it would ruin it. The secret, the big bomb that's always waiting to drop in these books is so unique and unexpected. Colleen truly made Hopeless her own and something new, I applaud her for that. Sky and Holder's relationship is undeniably one of my all time favorite love stories ever and it will remain that way for forever. The love they feel for each other feels so true and real that it's hard not to wish you had your own Holder. They're connection is so blatantly obvious and they make me believe in soul mates and happily ever afters. When s*** really hit the fan they didn't abandon each other, they didn't push each other away which is so common, they stuck together and helped each other through it. This wasn't just another one of those typical relationships you see in almost every NA Contemporary novel, it was unique and perfect and so amazing.

The ending of this book blew me away, I wasn't expecting what Colleen dropped in my lap as she was ripping my heart out and throwing it to the wolves. If I had expected such an emotional crazy story I would have grabbed myself some tissues and chocolate, holed up in my room, and then ignored everyone until I was done with it. Instead I found myself sobbing on the couch trying to explain to my mother why exactly I was such an emotional mess. The ending is so bittersweet for me, Colleen manages to twist so many lives and little details together in one book it's impossible to know what's coming next. In the end I was so sad for so many people but so full of hope that life can go no. Even though this is a fictional story their is so much truth within this book. Life is complete s*** sometimes and sometimes you don't feel like you can make it through but you can and you shouldn't ever forget that because even when there's nothing but ugly surrounding you, remember that there's always a tiny bit of beauty in the world. To say that this is a must read in my book is an understatement of the century. If you don't read this book and give it a try, you're insane. Thank you Colleen, for leaving me breathless and sharing yet another work of art neatly tucked in-between pages for me to devour. I will be patiently waiting for you to craft another piece of perfection for me to read.

    Favorite Quotes

"It's real, Six. You can't get mad at a real ending. Some of them are ugly. It's the fake happily ever afters that should piss you off." ~ Sky (page 107)

"I want your first kiss to be the best first kiss in the history of first kisses." ~ Holder (page 150)

"I'm not going to wish for a perfect life. The things that knock you down in life are tests, forcing you to make a choice between giving in and remaining on the ground or wiping the dirt off and standing up even taller than you did before you were knocked down." ~ Sky (page 475)

Plus so many more but my list would be endless, pretty sure this is one of my most highlighted ebooks!
