    Corinna Luyken is the author-illustrator of ABC AND YOU AND ME (June 2023); THE TREE IN ME (an NCTE Notable Poetry Book and Indie Bestseller); MY HEART (A New York Times Best Seller); and THE BOOK OF MISTAKES (which The Wall Street Journal called “sublime”). Adrian Simcox Does NOT Have a Horse is a classic in the making, and I absolutely cannot wait to read it to my students when school begins.

In 40 short pages Campbell, walks her young narrator, Chloe, on a journey from being a judgmental literalist to being a (more) mature and empathetic person with an imagination. It's delightful to watch Chloe's mother model patience and lack of judgement for Chloe and to watch Chloe learn those traits and demonstrate them in her final attitude toward Adrian. Both the writer and the illustrator clearly love children, but they don't idealize them or present them in a cloying manner.
