(back cover)
From conception to publication, the fantasy artist uses a wide range of skills to create magical, mythical, and monstrous characters and worlds of wonder. This indispensable book provides a thorough grounding in the tools and techniques you will need to produce spellbinding fantasy artwork in both traditional and digital media.

Each unit is devoted to a different element of fantasy art: find out where to look for inspiration; how to visualize the unreal; interpret narrative; bend the traditional rules of anatomy, perspective, and composition to create dramatic effects; render and color your work using pencils, paint, and pixels.

Experiment with different genres and create truly magical settings with extraordinary characters, from terrifying ogres and trolls to mischievous imps and fairies. Take your work to the next level and discover how to become a professional fantasy artist with advice and tips on how to present, promote, and sell your finished artwork.

Many young artists--tweens as well as older--are fantasy fans and love drawing fantasy characters. This book, while designed for the professional fantasy artist, is accessible to young people for many reasons. First, it contains no illustrations that are inappropriate for kids. Second, it is organized so that it can be used several ways. Chapter intros give summary information, and then a series of illustrations with instructions on each technique provide deeper information. Each illustration has a caption that includes a title and a few lines of explanation. No matter how much or how little is read, something will be learned. Third, many techniques are taught in a step-by-step manner that makes even complicated techniques accessible to the interested student. I think this is an excellent book.

I waited for the UPS truck, then spent the next hour leafing through the book. He shows techniques and gives direction, but does not take your hand. Gives you the artistic adventure. Learning techniques of different media and applying them to the images floating in my head and not someone else's is perfect for me.... I didn't want to draw from images that weren't mine. I have my own style to develop.

This is a great book for beginners in the field of character development in fantasy art, but it is also a great tool to teach students how to understand the whole idea of developing and creating any kind of character they want. Some of the ideas and techniques are universal.

How anyone would rate this book below 5 stars totally boggles the mind.... it is a concept book for the most part... there are plenty of books on anatomy and drawing in general so this book only touches those subjects lightly... it gives you enough to help form your idea into complete sketches.... it's not a "how -to-" or "follow along" book... its primary purpose to to break down fantasy art into pieces and provide details on those elements... exploring and explaining the ingredients of well thought out and executed rendering... absolutely beautiful and a welcome addition to my library.. I salute the author

The superb illustrations in The Fantasy Illustrator's Technique Book by national award-winning artist Gary A. Lippincott are rich in detail. Lippincott also serves as the author. The book keys into the techniques of this well-known watercolorist. There are also illustrations of artists from the 19th - 21st centuries, so you see a wide-range of approaches from an historical perspective. The chapters present a clear and logical stepping stone to understanding from setting up the workspace to visualizing and design and layout. The Fantasy Illustrator's Technique Book offers a master class by a world-renown artist in the field of fantasy art.

This is not a how-to art book. If your looking for a book to hold your hand through step by step examples this is not it. It does have good notes on procedures. And I mean notes. Meaning, how to get from idea, to sketch, to flushing out a fantasy drawing and stuff before the final piece as well as how to start taking a subject that exists and transform them into things that do not exist (as in no reference photos exist), a few pages on perception and building up forms from cylinder shapes (my least favorite way) but it is all so brief. In fact, if you took all the text from the book and wrote it all as one, the book would be about 5 pages long. If that. There is an awful lot of wasted space on page design although every art book needs photos of art this is a little wasteful. That being said, it does say a lot with less, if you know how to read between the lines. Good qualities of the book: it's a typical art guide but had fantasy subjects instead of same old bowl of fruit and still life's which is an awesome breath of dragon lovers air. The brief descriptions are good ones just not enough. It made me realize that I actually know a lot more than I give myself credit. Which I won't lie, in order to progress as an artist it is very important to teach ourself how to teach ourselves. As a whole, I still liked the book, I just noticed I got less than 3 pages of useful notes, in big sloping handwriting, so that's how many stars I give it.

This is a light-hearted, profusely illustrated book on the making of fantasy art, with a nice gallery of other artist's works in the back.
It is, though, not necessarily a book for present illustrators looking to get into the fantasy market; it is really more for a young person just starting out. Artists who are further along with fundamental skills in drawing and painting would benefit more from John Howe Fantasy Art Workshop, a more in-depth and less elementary approach. But for lovers of fantasy art, either book is a pleasure to see.

This book brings all the elements of everything you will need to draw fantasy art from start to finish, including the tools and basic equipment to get you started. The book is packed with professional drawings and painted illustrations to guide and inspire you along your creative way.

I found this book inspiring and a creatively organized book to follow with examples and techniques throughout.

The book also gives some tips to find reference material to get focused on drawing fantasy art and also with a small couple of pages telling you how to get in there and sell your art to potential companies, although I would recommend other resources on the internet for detailed information about earning from your art.

A great read this book and one that I reference a bit for creative ways on drawing figures to which it suggested to draw figures with the use of geometric shapes and to me this sounds logical and it really does work!

This is a hard book to sum up really, not because it is difficult to read or not very imformative, because it is a compelling, imformative read from cover to cover. No the difficulty is that it covers so much and appears to offer a great deal to so many artists. My own interest is in Digital Drawing / Painting, something this book is not aimed at however, not only did I find much to use on the computer this book also made me want to try some of the more conventional techniques. The section on visulising and the whole approach to starting an illustration was quite refreshing. It certainly left me with an number of ideas for a few illustrations that magically appeared in my head while reading. Well worth a look if Fantasy Art is your 'thing'.
