She Was Supposed to Be Gaining Independence.
What She Found Was Even Better . . .

Confirmed bachelor Lieutenant Jack Hennessey has long worked with the tribe and is tasked with trying to convince them that the mission school at Fort Reno can help their children. When a message arrives about a recovered survivor, Jack heads out to retrieve her--and plead his case with the chief once more.

He's stunned to run into Hattie Walker, the girl who shattered his heart years ago, but quickly realizes he has a chance to impress her. When his plan gets tangled through translation, Jack and Hattie end up in a mess that puts her dreams in peril and threatens to destroy his life's work.

"Genuinely heartfelt, this engaging plot and endearing cast bring Fort Reno to life . . . Readers will appreciate the masterful levity and authenticity Jennings incorporates into the tale as well as her compassionate, respectful depiction of the Native American tribes and their culture during the tumultuous time period of the Indian Territory."
--Hope by the Book

"The plot is lively, the irony entertaining, and the development of Hattie and Jack's relationship heart-warming."--Historical Novel Reviews

A witty and suspenseful story full of laughs and love!
Old friends, long since become strangers, find themselves tethered together in the most unlikely of circumstances.Calvary Lieutenant Jack Hennessey is proud of his work with the Arapaho on the reservation near Fort Reno. He considers himself a friend and student of their culture and has even begun to learn their language. So, when he receives word they have a white woman in their custody who was the victim of a stagecoach robbery, he is quick to respond to her aid.But he is blindsided when the fear-filled, mud-covered woman is a girl from his hometown, Miss Hattie Walker. The same Hattie he was sweet on for years--not that she’d ever paid him much attention. Trying to impress her with his knowledge of the Arapaho, he attempts to arrange a ceremony to transfer her from the custody of the Arapaho to the U.S. Calvary. But with his limited knowledge of the language, he doesn’t understand the ceremony is one of marriage until it’s too late.Hattie Walker is determined to travel to Colorado to prove to her parents she could make a living with her talent. If she could sell one painting, then she wouldn’t be forced to settle down and marry. But when her stagecoach is robbed and she is the only living survivor, her plans come to an abrupt halt. Left with nothing and terrified of every noise and shadow, she is relieved to see a familiar face in the cavalry officer who rescues her from the Indian reservation. Her relief is short-lived when she realizes he accidentally married her. How will she ever submit a painting in Denver if she’s stuck at Fort Reno?Knowing if they disregard the Arapaho’s marriage ceremony they will be disrespecting the tribe, Jack’s commanding officer insists they pretend to be married until Jack can be transferred out of Indian territory. So, while Hattie is pretending outside of the home in front of the troops, Jack is pretending the one woman he’d wanted as a wife isn’t living and sleeping in his house. As they pass the time until the transfer orders can be received, Hattie and Jack discover there’s more to each other than what they remember from childhood. And when Hattie helps Jack with problems surrounding the school for the Arapaho children, she begins to understand why he is willing to live in such a barren and dangerous place. Will Jack give up his career’s work of helping the Arapaho so Hattie can continue on with her dreams or will Hattie discover what her heart desires most is not selling a painting? After reading the first Fort Reno book, Holding the Fort, I have been waiting to read Jack’s story. I enjoyed the camaraderie and humor between Lieutenant Jack and his commanding officer, Major Adams. Jack is an interesting hero. He’s swoon-worthy (of course!) and a gentleman, but he’s also a bit of an academic or, as Hattie sees him, a bookworm. He may not wear spectacles, but he is definitely an atypical hero. It’s refreshing to have a leading man who has a lifelong devotion to expanding his knowledge as I’m a bit of a self-proclaimed nerd myself.I always say I MUST like the heroine if I’m to really enjoy a story. It’s easy to like a dreamy hero who moves heaven and earth to be with the woman he loves. But to root for the romance in the book, you have to believe they deserve each other, which means you need to like the heroine, too!Hattie may be a little selfish in the beginning as she is focused on her goal of being a successful painter. She left the security and familiarity of her hometown to expand her artist’s eye. But the world Jack introduces to her makes her grow exponentially as a woman and provides a newfound depth to her paintings. I loved watching her transformation and adored her tenacity and wit, despite her secret insecurities when dealing with Jack’s intellect.I also enjoyed how Hattie seemed to be the one with the most courage in the relationship even though Jack is an officer in the United States Calvary. You’ve got to love a girl who’s willing to stand up for what she wants. The story had plenty of laugh-out-loud moments as well as sweet and simmering romance (you’ll love the rollerskating scene, I promise!). It only took a couple of chapters to have me completely hooked, and I was scrolling through the pages late into the night.

Ever since Lt. Jack Hennessey was introduced in Holding the Fort, I patiently waited all year for his story, The Lieutenant’s Bargain. Okay, maybe not * patiently * considering I kinda stalked the mailman when I’d heard my copy was coming. But yes! This story, by the talented Regina Jennings, is fabulous. So prepare yourself for all my gushing!
After I got my hot little hands on this story, I could NOT put it down. The narrative was witty and humorous. The plot was vivid and engaging! And the characters—Oh my, these characters!!!!—were dynamic and so fun.

I totally loved that Lt. Jack pined over his longtime crush for, um, decades. It was adorable to read about a successful military man turning to mush at the presence of Hattie Walker. While this story contains a lot of charming banter and delightful scenes, the plot is not all just fun and games. There are elements of mystery and danger lurking between the pages that kept me intrigued and guessing until the final chapters.

The tender romance between the characters was never forced but unfolded organically and beautifully. The thread of God’s unfailing presence during scary times was woven seamlessly throughout the story, leaving my heart refreshed and strengthened. Basically, I adored everything about this novel and will no doubt stalk my mailman again for the third book in the series.

*I received a copy of this story. All opinions are my own.

The cover made me think this book might be a little hokey. It wasn’t The characters grew and matured. The story became more than you thought The romance developed predictably but still interesting,y.
I liked the vulnerablity of the Jack and even the immaturity of Hattie in the beginning..
The trauma Hattie experienced free more pronounced as the story evolved which is as it should be. But, it also showed how she worked through it which I liked.
Most of all, I liked that the end wasn’t rushed, the book didn’t just stop with their marriage being accepted. The story continued with a very pleasant ending. It think I liked that best. It didn’t feel rushed and cut off like so many. It resolved.
I was really pleasantly surprise at how good this book was. I will read more from this author. If you like historical romance you will like this book

"I'm not staying here. I can't. . . . . . Besides, this is the last place in the world I'd want to stay."

Dreams were over-rated, especially when you were hanging onto the edge of a gully in Oklahoma's vast Indian Territory, fearing for your life. Leaving a comfortable home in order to prove one's artistic talent in a large city like Denver, Colorado now seems laughable. News flash! A vicious killer is on the loose and Hattie Walker is at his mercy, if she manages to survive the night. Traumatized by a stagecoach robbery and subsequent murders of all the occupants save herself, Hattie is further terrified when it is a group of Arapaho Indians who come to her rescue. But then that handsome lieutenant arrives.

Lieutenant Jack Hennessey cannot believe his eyes; the woman (once a childhood classmate) who has filled his dreams for years has re-appeared, providing him with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate heroism . . . . except that there was a slight twist in the translation. When Jack and Hattie leave the Arapahos and head towards Fort Reno, their lack of juvenile attachment will become the least of their worries.

"You have to find what God wants you to do, and He's got plans for me as well." Plans, plans, plans. Enjoy every disruption of plans that this book happily provides, it's a lovely continuation of the author's "Fort Reno Series".

"The Lieutenant's Bargain" is an inspirational novel set in Fort Reno, and follows the lives of Hattie Walker and Lieutenant Jack Hennessey as they attempt to fulfill an unexpected bargain after Hattie is rescued by a group of Arapaho and safely handed over to Jack. The novel is clean and filled with unexpected twists. Although Jennings does mention the protagonists' belief in God, she is not preachy or includes Bible verses. Instead, she weaves in aspects of the Christian faith through the characters' strengths and flaws. The novel does not focus too much on the hero vs. villain trope; instead, inner battles are the main focus and light is shed on post traumatic stress. I definitely enjoyed the slow development of the protagonists' love and the characters were well-developed. For those of you who love history, Jennings includes an author's note that explains the history behind the novel. This is the first novel I have read by Regina Jennings and I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

I really enjoyed this book and haven’t been disappointed by this author. I like how she thoroughly fleshes out her characters so that the reader understands them and their point of view. I love the author’s twist on history which she will reveal at the end in the author’s note. This twist permeates the story, and it wouldn’t be the same without it. I love Jack’s heart, his nerdy start, and his sometimes endearing cluelessness. I love how Hattie grows, becomes wise as the story progresses, and demonstrates her wisdom several chapters before the end. I enjoy the historical glimpse of the Arapaho and despite some bittersweet moments as they adapt to change, I like that the story doesn’t dwell on the bad. i love catching up with previous characters, and I will definitely read any future books in the series.

I have enjoyed Regina Jennings's books since the beginning, but this was definitely one of my favorites. Two strong-willed, yet vulnerable main characters make the reader realize that things are not always what they appear and just because someone seems to 'have it all together' doesn't mean that they do. Jennings included a rich history of the people around Fort Reno and now I can't wait to go out there and visit it myself! A great read-you won't be disappointed.
