Night Winds (Kane Book 468) Kindle Edition
Where once the mighty Kane has passed, no one who lives forgets. Now, down the trail of past battles, Kane travels again. To the ruins of a devastated city peopled only with half-men and the waif they call their queen. To the half-burnt tavern where a woman Kane wronged long ago holds his child in keeping for the Devil. To the cave kingdom of the giants where glory and its aftermath await discovery. To the house of death itself where Kane retrieves a woman in love.
The past, the future, the present - all these are one for Kane as he travels through the centuries.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024As a kid I got one of the books in this series in a grocery store on a whim. I was an avid reader already... and was completely blown away!
I could never find most of the rest in the series without spending a lot of money for beat up paperbacks. I did get a couple of others over the years, but never the complete series.
Thank you Kindle! For pocket money I got all the books digitally.
The original artwork on the paperbacks was about 1000 times better ( Frank Frazetta) so don't let the dorky covers on Kindle fool you. If you long for fantasy novels with some edge to them look no farther. Gandolf the Grey would simply be crushed if Kane were coming, Conan would tremble. ( Both great reads of course, no disrespect) It's Kane all the way for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2023KEW really knew how to weave tales, and these are among my favorites, each a standout. Marvelously detailed story lines, loads of atmosphere with well-conceived characters, I've come to favor them over any of the Conan stories, they're that well written. RIP, Karl.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2015This collection of dark fantasy stories center on the mysterious figure of Kane, a tautly muscled red-haired killer of men. If that description intrigues you, you're in luck, friend! You will hear it many times!
Kane is quite a remarkable fantasy protagonist, as he is straight up a monstrous villain. No tormented anti-hero here: the necromancer is petty, cruel and violent -- though luckily for bystanders also often quite uninterested in their goings-on. His status as a cursed immortal makes him the entry character to each tale, and rarely the object of the plot's progression. If anything, he's more of a wild card in whatever volatile situation is dropped: which faction's side will Kane choose in this story, and will they benefit from it at all? There is no knowing!
Though the setting is a sword and sorcery one, the stories vary in subgenre from horror to war to adventure, even crime! It's also a treat to try and puzzle out how many days/weeks/centuries have passed since the last short. Through Kane's eternal life, Wagner infuses the tales with a nihilist quality that might put some off (Is "Undertow" five-hundred years before "Lynortis Reprise"? Who can tell, humans are still stupid jerks!), but the variety and breakneck pace of the stories will keep anyone interested in gothic horror fantasy engaged to the end. Which comes in at under 200 pages, by the way!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2015Plenty of surprises in these collections of "Kane" short stories. The mood is dark (I can't read too many of these in a row, as I find the evil inherent in the characters a downer) and somewhat mystic at times. The main character, Kane, is the Cain of the Bible, who has lived centuries and become a supreme warrior and, at times, wizard. Hard to deceive, because he really has seen it all. But nearly every time I thought I had the ending of one of the stories figured out, Karl Edward Wagner surprised me, mostly to my delight. Again, though, I need to mix these with some Terry Pratchett to avoid melancholy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2015Dark, moody, foreboding, provocative and yet entertaining series of books written by a master of the genre. If you like your heroic fantasy written around someone who is the very opposite of a virtuous hero, and an original human from mankind's dawn, but still possessing daring, courage and an ability to occasionally feel for other humans, this series won't bore you.
I once owned all the first print copies of all the books in this series, and foolishly let them when down-sizing my library by many hundreds of older books. Stupid, right?
I've waited quite a while for the publisher to release these books in Kindle format. Don't miss out on adding them to your Sword, Sorcery and Fantasy library while you can.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2016I recently discovered the great Karl Edward Wagner. I got me the Centipede Press complete Kane stories and all the Kindle versions, I do this often. The Centipede Press volumes are beautifully published and have stories not included in the Kindle but of course they are pricey. All Kane series is excellent and the short stories are top notch, they are really special. Night Winds along Death Angel Shadow are one of the best collections of dark fantasy short stories I ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sword and sorcery stories
Kane, swordsman and sorcerer, who features in several fantasy novels and shorter stories by Karl Edward Wagner, is the subject of this story collection from 1978. His adventures take place in a brutal, dark sword and sorcery world of the type familiar from stories about Conan and similar fantasy barbarian protagonists: a mix of ancient and medieval technologies, ancient ruined cities and more medieval towns, isolated inns and fortresses separated by monster-haunted wildernesses. Kane is immortal, though capable of dying by violence. He somewhat resembles Conan; but he differs in being portrayed much more as an anti-hero, learned, and comfortable employing magic. Arguably he more closely resembles Michael Moorcock’s Elric, a roughly contemporaneous creation. Kane’s immortal existence alternates between ennui and adventuring to break the monotony of his unending and ultimately lonely existence.
The collection consists of six stories. In ‘Undertow’ Kane is settled as a much feared sorcerer in an ancient city. His mistress enlists the help of a sea captain to try to escape from the relationship, which doesn’t work out well for anyone in this very sad but excellent tale. ‘Two Suns Setting’ is another sad, excellent tale, in which Kane, fleeing from his enemies into a cold desert, encounters a member of the fading race of giants. The giant wishes to find the tomb of an ancient king of his people in order to confirm their past glories and Kane agrees to help. ‘The Dark Muse’ is the story where the tile of the collection is mentioned and sees Kane helping a poet friend find inspiration by using sorcery to allow him to encounter a dark goddess, the muse of dreams. In ‘Raven’s Eyrie’ an injured Kane and the remnants of a band of outlaws he has been leading seek refuge in an isolated inn that was the scene of one of their previous crimes. Naturally vengeance is in the air, leading to a very exciting struggle against both human and supernatural forces. ‘Lynortis Reprise’ sees Kane helping a woman he encounters in the blasted landscape left after a titanic battle. The setting allows Wagner to provide some highly evocative and imaginative descriptions, along with a message about the senselessness of mass conflict. The final story, ‘Sing a Last Song of Valdese’ features Kane in a more peripheral role in a clever tale of revenge.
I previously reviewed an earlier Kane collection, Death Angel’s Shadow, as thoughtful, adult sword and sorcery. The same can be said of the later collection, which is however even stronger. Every story is good or excellent and they are better written and more original than in the previous collection. I would recommend any of the Kane books to fans of sword and sorcery but especially this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kane
Several short stories about Kane. I read this back in the 80's & bought it recently on kindle in a fit of nostalgia, & wasn't disappointed. Darker than your run-of-the mill fantasy fare

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Devil
Kane is an immortal, cursed by a God for the blasphemy of his past sins. He has lived many lives and as a result has become an expert in many fields - killer, mercenary, wizard, adventurer, king, thief, assassin - you name it, Kane's become adept at it.
So ultimately he spends his time wandering the landscape, amusing himself on different quests, completely ambivalent to morals, individuals or the pressing current affairs of the story's particular age..
Nightwinds is a collection of short stories featuring the anti-hero Kane.
Included are:
Undertow - A ghostly tale of love and imprisonment.
Two Suns Setting - An adventure tale, wherein Kane joins forces with the last giant of a dying race.
The Dark Muse - Kane helps a struggling writer to achieve greatness.
Raven's Eyrie - With a bounty on his head, Kane returns to a place he ransacked years before, but must turn from hunted to hunter if he is to
survive a demon lord and the wrath of a vengeful woman.
Lynortis Reprise - Kane returns to a forgotten battlefield, only to discover that for some the war continues.
Sing A Last Song Of Valdese - A group of travellers find themselves resting in an inn together, but although seemingly strangers, their histories may prove otherwise.
Overall my favourites were probably Two Suns Setting, Raven's Eyrie and Lynortis Reprise.. But with that said all of them are excellent.
Wagner has a very musical style to his writing and tales which is perfect for this kind of character and the lore that surrounds him. The stories are deep, dark and brooding, sort of horror fantasy filled with metaphor, but tales which also have a definite humour and charm to them which keeps them from becoming grim or too much like hard work.
Kane's a fabulous character, surrounded by other characters that are far from the usual cookie-cutter efforts you get in lots of this type of fiction.
These are best read by firelight, swigging mead from a drinking vessel made of horn, whilst shadows dance the walls.
Psychedelic drugs are optional.

A great read for sword and sorcery fans. Definitely a successor to Howard, in some ways actually better story structure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic
A haunting classic in the genre. Eerie and exiting at the same time. Absolutely brilliant.
