Purchase options and add-ons
Princess Puffybottom has the perfect life -- her subjects serve her delicious meals, clean up her "delicate matters" and wait on her hand and foot. Life is good . . . until Darryl arrives. Princess Puffybottom thinks he's disgusting, horrid and a true animal. Though she tries everything in her power to banish him (including hypnosis, trickery and even sabotage), it looks like this puppy is here to stay. Can Princess P. and Darryl find a way to co-exist? A hilarious picture book from acclaimed author Susin Nielsen, with adorable illustrations by Olivia Chin Mueller, Princess Puffybottom . . . and Darryl is perfect for not only warring siblings, but also anyone who loves cute pets (and some toilet humor).

"Nielsen's tale and Mueller's digitally created pooch and puss pair perfectly. . . . Princess and Darryl need a sequel." --Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews
“Beautifully illustrated with muted colors throughout, both Nielsen and Mueller have presented a delightful story of a pampered cat who learns to adapt to the changes within her family.” --School Library Connection
“Nielsen’s text is understated and funny. Children will relate to its simplicity and adults will understand all that is left unsaid about their children’s feelings.” --Imaginary Elevators
"Mueller’s frisky digital cartoons flaunt the pets’ differing personalities, making their eventual coziness all the more tender." --Publishers Weekly
“The humorous, entrancing illustrations relay part of the story not explained in the text and act as a visual punch line to the humour. . . . Children will love Princess Puffybottom’s antics.” --Resource Links

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2019This is a great book for kids who are adjusting to new family members and it’s a funny way to give them a little distance from their own situation and laugh. The world doesn’t always run the way we want it to. Princess Puffybottom is a very particular cat who likes being in charge of her family – or subjects, as she calls them - and she likes getting her own way. When Darryl comes to live with them, she’s a little upset. He’s uncouth and she does everything she can to sabotage his relationship with the family, but they keep him. Worse, he seems to want to spend most of his time with her and he likes her! So…sigh… she decides she might as well tolerate him. The twist at the end? Her family enters the house with a baby. We can guess there are more adjustments in store for the Princess.
I very much liked the book. It will make kids laugh and the illustrator provides marvelous pictures that capture a slightly spoiled, but typical cat and her adoring new puppy friend. Some adults should also be prepared for questions on the last page about same-sex parents.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2019Loved the story since I have a little princess just like this cat
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2019My Review: Having loved a black cat dearly for the past 15 years, I was instantly attracted to this cover. Munchkin is madly in love with our cat Valerie, so I thought it would be a fun book to share with him. This book was above and beyond anything I could have ever expected. This is kind of how my cat's life went, she was queen bee, ruled the house and had everything she could want, we brought home a big bouncy dog and she was not happy. It was so fun to read the progression in Princess Puffybottom's life and it was fun to revisit memories of our own household. I like how the message of change and new things can be good was subtle but clearly there. Also in the background we get to see a loving and stable relationship between two women, I love how it is there not hiding but also not being forced to the front. This is a very sweet story and it would be a perfect bedtime story for little ones. The soft illustration style and colors are soothing and the story is short enough to read to sleepy kids.
My Rating: I adored this story and while Munchkin didn't pick up on the subtler details he did latch on to the black cat being like our own and how the family has one cat and one dog. It was so cute and sweet that we can't help but give it a rating of Four Paws!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2019This is a cute story of the relationship between Princess Puffybottom and Darryl. Princess Puffybottom thought her fancy kitty life was just fine until one day her family brought a puppy home. She decides to do everything in her power to get her old life back, and get rid of Darryl.
I can totally relate to this story. It’s always chaos for a few days when a new pet is introduced at home, As much as I liked this story, I can only give it a four star because I was hoping for a bit more sassy cat and naughty puppy illustrations. The illustrations were good, but I feel as if they could have portrayed these naughty little pets a bit better to make it more entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2019Adorable illustrations and a very sweet story for little children. Princess Puffybottom lives an enviable kitty life until a new puppy enters the story. A spoiled but loveable cat who always gets her way does not want to share the young black couple with the puppy so she thinks of ways to get him into trouble, But then she notices that Darryl loves and adores her so why fight it?
This book is great on so many levels. It would be a great book for children to receive when there will be a new baby in the home, also to introduce same sex couples and above all sharing.
I highly recommend this children's book to all families with young children.
I received a finished copy of this book as a win from LibraryThing from the publishers in exchange for a fair book review. My thoughts and feelings in this review are totally my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this digital ARC.
If you know anything about me, you know that I love cats. Even if they are snobby, particular, and frustrating pets at times, they will always have my heart. This adorable story is about a pretentious cat rather annoyed at the new furry member of the family and her evil plans to send this new pet on his way. She's so wrapped up in her plan, she doesn't see something else happening in the background.
The illustrations are lovely and provide a great deal of inferential clues in the background with the words of the story simple, but funny and will certainly have kids laughing at Princess Puffybottom's antics. I would highly recommend for elementary students, in particular, K-2 classrooms.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019This book has bright, colorful adorable illustrations, a diva kitty with two mommies, and a cute puppy named Darryl, what more can you ask for? “Princess Puffybottom” is a book that I would recommend to everyone who loves animals and perfect for anyone who has children (and is great if you don’t), I don’t think you will be disappointed. This is a sweet book. I hope there is a sequel in the works, since the ending is left open for more.
My niece read this book and said she loved it and wanted there to be more, hoped there would be more. She loved Princess Puffybottom and Darryl.
I won this book from LibraryThing from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
My niece and I give this book 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome story about welcoming a new baby
My kids LOVED this book, and now a neighbour's kids are enjoying it! I LOVE how the illustrator took the story to a new level. If you're bringing home a new baby, or a new pet, this is the perfect book to help your toddler/kinder kid out!
