- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2014I have read many historical novels by celebrated writers (Robert Shea, James Clavell, Larry Collins, Jeffrey Archer). None of these authors tackled 500 years of history in trilogies or series. Kevin does it in one book, using a most imaginative instrument--reincarnation.
The story of Adam Avatar begins among indigenous Caribbean people (Arawaks, Caribs) before the arrival of Columbus. Avatar, in his ten incarnations, several of them in female form, takes readers through Spanish conquest and colonisation of the Caribbean, slavery, post-slavery and independence.
It's fascinating following Avatar's many lives, peeping into the private lives of the planter class, the slavers', royalty, clerics, whores... That the author holds the reader's interest intensely throughout most of the book is credit to his talent for storytelling.
His command of language and style put him among the pantheon of great Caribbean writers. He often slips into satire that is his trademark as a newspaper columnist. And his use of eroticism in parts of the book adds to its appeal.
This is a world class novel by a little-known Caribbean writer. Read it and you'd find he as good as, if not better than, the authors I mentioned above. I eagerly await Kevin's next novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2010Due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland, my book didn't arrive in the due date. They explained to me that the flights were canceled but they gave me the choice of a complimentary title or 10% off my next purchase with them. Three days after they emailed me, my book arrived. And i have a new book on the way. Customer satisfaction guaranteed :)

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2015Kevin insults the intelligence of his readership by presenting a rip off of Timothy Findley's 'Pilgrim' as an original work. It is essentially a shameless plagiarism of premise with a smokescreen of a West Indian historical context.
This may have been excusable if it were marketed for what it really is...a work of fan-fiction which attempts to satisfy the 'what ifs?'.
This novel 'jumps the shark' with gratuitous use of several explicit sexual scenes, which can be interpreted as both self serving and as cheap and desperate attempts to maintain interest....typical of fan-fiction (see twilight and fifty shades of grey).
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020For the life of me I cannot understand why this truly brilliant novel is not more well-known. Kevin Baldeosingh's The Ten Incarnations of Adam Avatar uses 50 year periods of the last 500 years to explore the history of conquest, colonialism and neocolonialism in the Caribbean. He does so through well-drawn characters from the indigenous populations, the various peoples brought to the islands such as Africans, Indians, Chinese, characters from the various colonial powers and white creoles and mulattoes. In each successive period he explores the character, culture and identity issues of the period as well as the various intellectual ideas from each period. Make no mistake, this is not a history book. It is riveting and alive. Buy it. People of the Caribbean this book will make you proud.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2018I am right in the middle of the story of the fourth incarnation so I'll have to update later to say if my love for this book has corrupted but I have been enjoying it so much I decided to review it anyway.
As a person of the Caribbean and a diasporic being, this book is everything. To have the history of the Caribbean explored with such depth of character, spanning many ages, it conjures up so many of the personal stories I had often imagined about the highly varied people and cultures that have created this highly complex yet tiny region of the world. Well Done!
