In development as a major motion picture

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

A
Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of January 2022: In The Maid, Molly, a twenty-something maid working in a New York hotel, discovers notorious—and very wealthy—guest Charles Black dead in his bed. This is a problem for any number of reasons, not least of which is that it offends Molly’s sense of order, which is what leads her to clean Black’s room immediately. At sea when it comes to social cues, lonely, and reliant on her late Gran’s codes of conduct to navigate the world, Molly’s actions and curious demeanor see her propelled to the top of the suspect list. Guileless, earnest, and determined, the bulk of the suspense in this novel is watching Molly—as vulnerable as a toddler on train tracks—hunt down the real killer. Luckily, this endearing odd duck has more friends than she realizes, and that makes this mystery as charming and amusing as it is propulsively readable. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor

Maid in the Shade, Then the Sunshine
When my sister chose Nita Prose's The Maid to read for our book club, I thought it was Maid, the novel that became a gritty TV series. Naturally, I was relieved to find out that it wasn't that book. But once I started turning the pages of Prose's debut not-quite-whodunit, my concern returned.Twenty-five-year-old Molly Gray is a maid at a fancy hotel. But she isn't a clock puncher eager to trade her Pledge for party clothes after her shift. Cleaning is Molly's life. She takes unparalleled joy in "returning rooms to a state of perfection" and maintains a rigorous home housework schedule in the tenement she shares with her grandmother. Molly and her grandmother are best friends. Actually, Gran is Molly's only friend. Her wisdom, often dispensed as aphorisms, helps Molly navigate the daily challenge of social situations as well as the sometimes not-so-nice (i.e. cruel) colleagues and guests she encounters. So it isn't easy being Molly. And it gets more difficult when she finds a dead body while cleaning the penthouse. What happens next tests everything Molly knows -- and doesn't know -- about how people work. Their characters, their motivations, and their shockingly common tendency to bend the truth. Watching her forge through the forest that is this puzzle is painful, memories of her grandmother and other past moments mingling to reveal the extent of her struggles.Prose's story isn't so much about solving a murder mystery, or even the mystery of Molly herself. It's about understanding -- and ultimately respecting -- people who are different. Because as Gran herself often says, "We're all the same in different ways." By placing Molly in a dangerous situation, Prose magnifies her otherness, rousing our sympathies. But she also shows us that Molly has the rare kind of courage that just might save the day.Poignant and human and sometimes hard to read, The Maid is a metaphor for life's messes. In the end, I was glad we read it for book club.If only as a little reminder that we're each equipped with our own kind of mop.

I enjoyed this for the murder mystery and for the fact that the lead character is on the autism spectrum. The characterization of Molly, the maid, was respectfully done, I thought. She wasn't drawn weird like Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man, thank goodness! That was one movie I felt made autistic people look terrible.

Anyway, this novel is about Molly Gray, a maid in an upscale hotel who gets caught up in a murder investigation when someone she trusts takes advantage of her naivete. It doesn't make the fact that she's autistic the sole reason that she's been hoodwinked, but there's also the fact that she was brought up by her late grandmother and was very sheltered. Her personality is a combination of both the autism and her innocence, however, she's no dummy, which is delightfully revealed at the end.

Overall, I found both the mystery and Molly intriguing, and as a result, I was unable to put this book down until I finished it. I can totally see why it rose to such popularity last year! I definitely plan to read the sequel, too, ASAP! ☺

Throughout “The Maid,” I felt like half the time I wanted to throw my phone with its Kindle app across the room. How could Molly be so… daft? I mean, withholding information during police questioning, protecting people who didn’t deserve it (though in at least one case, probably did)? I get that the author’s intent was to have her lead character be different - possibly neurodivergent - but, yeesh!

Also, based on their speech patterns and mannerisms, are Molly and her Gran meant to be British ex-pats living in the US? (They wouldn’t call Dancing With the Stars by that name, but by its British one, Strictly Come Dancing.) And, don’t get me started with Juan Manuel…

However, despite these faults, I found “The Maid” to be a quick and easy read with a couple of twists I didn’t see coming. Definitely worth the time to check out, and I think I can see myself reading Book 2 sometime.

This book hooked me in right from the start!!! I absolutely fell in love with Molly (and of course the abundance of wisdom from her dear Gran!) I truly loved the way Nita created Molly's inner dialogue and her character development throughout the story was so special to watch unfold. Her mannerisms and "different" way of acknowledging things at face value was so refreshingly honest; more than once I found myself relating to her struggles and also thoughtfully considering her messages. Such an out of the box protagonist storyline, full of little inspirational nuggets, that WILK leave you feeling all the feels!

3.5 stars. After all the hype, I wanted to like this novel more than I actually did. However, I did enjoy reading it and was interested in learning how the plot would resolve itself, and what would become of each of the characters.
***spoiler alert***
From the outset it becomes evident that the main character, Molly, is on the autism spectrum but has carved out a life for herself in routine and hard work, even after the death of her beloved grandmother who was her guardian. Molly's lack of guile gives an interesting perspective to the events surrounding the death of a guest and the interactions with those immediately involved and we want her to succeed, even as others take advantage of her. Most of the characters were interesting and well drawn. However, there were several aspects of the novel which I found frustrating. Charlotte's character feels very much contrived as someone who conveniently becomes a savior. Mr. Preston alludes to knowing Molly's grandmother very well and knowing more about her family, yet this is never explained or brought up again, and Molly shows no great interest in finding out more, in spite of this absence of family being such a factor in her life. The character of Juan Manuel also feels somewhat contrived and I did not really buy into the romance.
In short, I enjoyed the novel and Molly's character, but had to look past some of the plot/character elements.

This was a short book with a classic hotel mystery. It was enjoyable to guess who did it. The main characters perspective was interesting to read, as I can sometimes relate. There was an unexpected romance and the social dynamics tied together in a way that warmed my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story.
Reviewed in Canada on April 7, 2024
This is a great story from a unique perspective. Molly has her own way of looking at the world, largely influenced by her grandmother bringing her up. Her no-nonsense approach to hard work, honesty and taking pride in her job is refreshing in today's climate of people being satisfied with just doing the minimum. In contrast to today's society of professional victimhood, Molly never complains, takes care of herself and triumphs in the face of adversity. I have the advantage of reading the first and second books as I write this review, and I can say without reservation these two books are some of the best books I have read this year.
