About the authors
I'm an illustrator, mostly of books for children and young adults. I create book covers and interior illustrations and enjoy drawing fantasy, spooky, historical and animal themes.
When I was small I was desperate to get to Narnia. I had a habit of walking into other people’s wardrobes, which must have been awkward for my parents. Eventually I discovered the next best way of travelling to other worlds was to lose myself in drawing them.
I love illustrating children’s fiction. Getting lost in a good story and expressing the characters, setting and atmosphere through drawing is still the best kind of escapism I know. It also means I no longer feel the need to walk into wardrobes.
My work is informed by a love of nature, myth and history, all of which can be found in abundance where I live, on the Devon-Dorset border. The beautiful landscape of the West Country, the stunning scenery of the Jurassic Coast and the wilds of nearby Dartmoor provide a constant source of inspiration.
I've been a freelance illustrator since 2001, but I came to it the long way round. After graduating in graphics and illustration in 1992, I worked as an animator on some of the earliest digital media productions for clients around the world. In 1995 I joined the BBC and was part of the R&D team that developed the Corporation’s first website. I later founded Codename, an award winning media production company, before I finally returned to my first love and picked up my pencils in earnest again.
I live with my wife and two children, near the pretty seaside town of Lyme Regis, on the south coast of England. When I’m not working I enjoy hiking, camping, fossil-hunting, playing the guitar and rummaging through second-hand book shops.
I grew up in a cold, dark house in the north of England that overlooked a graveyard. It explains a lot I think. I've always had a fascination for things that go bump in the night and my reading - and later my writing - naturally veered in this direction.
I've so many favourite authors it seems unfair to single any out, but I do love Alan Garner and Susan Cooper. They made me believe that extraordinary things could happen to ordinary children. I was also very aware of landscape and seasons in their writing and this is something I try to emulate.
After stints in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, I'm currently living in the Pacific Northwest of the US, which is rainy, misty and smells of pine. I like being both outdoors and indoors, depending on mood, activity and weather. Autumn is by far my favourite season
If you've read any books from the Aveline Jones or Shadowhall Academy series, thank you very much, I hope you enjoyed it!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2022I was so happy that my fave characters from the first book returned, yet the story is full of new thrills and intriguing characters. The author has a knack for making even minor characters feel warm and likable with just a few strokes. I particularly appreciate the Aveline books' fascination with real folklore and history. This book never talks down to readers because they’re just kids. The author respects his audience enough to make the story really spooky in places, sad in other paces, and triumphant in others. Highly recommend.

Aveline isn’t spending her summer break at the beach like she’d hoped. Instead, she and her mother are staying in a cottage in the sleepy village of Norton Wick.
While Aveline is initially concerned that this holiday will be boring, it turns out to be anything but. Conveniently located at the end of the garden are The Witch Stones, an ancient stone circle with mysterious origins.
Aveline, with her love of things that go bump in the night and anything else that would be of interest to Mulder, is in her element. Harold, her friend from Malmouth, is coming to visit for a few days with his uncle and Lilian, Aveline’s aunt.
Together, Aveline and Harold hope to solve the mysteries of the stone circle and the strange bottle Aveline found in the garden.
“Old bottles with things inside them couldn’t just be ignored.”
Before Harold arrives, Aveline makes a new friend, Hazel Browne. That’s “Browne with an e.” She also meets the local vicar, Alice, who’s fond of bowler hats and rainbow socks.
I was glad when Harold showed up because, although I was initially intrigued by Hazel, her possessiveness didn’t endear her to me at all. I never connected with her so found it difficult to see beyond her abrasiveness, even after I understood where she was coming from.
I enjoyed the magic in this book and definitely considered indulging in dessert with Aveline and Hazel.
Aveline and Harold’s first response, regardless of the ooky spookiness they’re facing, is to find a bunch of books and do research. That affords them kindred spirit status with me for life.
I love both Aunt Lilian and Mr Lieberman, who I met in the first book, but they didn’t have much of a role in this one. I had been looking forward to getting to know Aveline’s mother but I didn’t really get much of a sense of her personality. I hope to get to know the adults better in the next book.
I absolutely adored Keith Robinson’s illustrations in this book. The cover image was dark, mysterious and creepy. I particularly loved the magpie featured at the beginning of each chapter.
Although I definitely got sucked into the mystery of the first book more than this one, I love Aveline and can’t wait to hang out with her and Harold again in The Vanishing of Aveline Jones.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2021This was such a fantastic sequel! I loved how Aveline deals with something different this time, but just as eerie & hauntingly amazing. I love a good witch story, & this delivered. I stayed wondering if a certain character was good, bad, or somewhere in the middle. Such a quick read, didn’t want to put it down. VERY atmospheric. The writing makes you feel like you’re really there-whether in this little town, at the witch stones, where she is staying, & other places-loved it! This kept me in suspense, & I loved how the story unfolded, & everything we learned about the town, the witches, & the witch stones along the way. I was so happy so see Harold too! I remember reading a small preview for this one when I finished the 1st book, & how it said she’d be traveling somewhere. And I was worried that meant he wouldn’t be in this book(since I loved them together in the first book). So I was very relieved to see them in action together again. Plus a couple other familiar characters make an appearance. I absolutely love Aveline, & I can’t wait to see what she & Harold get up to in the next book. Highly recommend. Another beautiful cover by Keith Robinson too, along with beautiful chapter head illustrations!💜

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2022Not since Harry Potter have I had as much fun reading a middle school book series.
The Bewitching of Aveline Jones is the second book in the series. Aveline’s mother has booked a cottage for the two of them for a little vacation. Behind the cottage, on the other side of the garden is a stone circle, known by the locals as The Witches Stones.
Aveline meets a girl her age, and they become friends, but Hazel is mysterious. Will Aveline and her friend, Harold, solve the mystery before it is too late?
Such a spooky little book with characters that already feel like my friends. The third book in the series is supposed to come out in October of 2022.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful cozy halloween read.
Unlike the first part, this one is set in early autumn. Aveline jones is back with her curiosity for the paranormal and this time an ancient site called the witch stones has grabbed her interest. She is soon befriended by a girl named Hazel who is pretty smart and wise. But her bestie Harold is back and will protect her from all harm........Even if its Hazel!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tremendously good read!!!
This is a wonderful story, very easy to read and yet, the sentences are not simplistic, the vocabulary is rich.
I advise anyone who likes reading to grab this book and spend a good time going through the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning sequel to a solid spooky series
This book was absolutely fantastic and everything any child between 8-11 (and older) would be fine reading. This is a brilliant follow on from The Haunting of Aveline Jones, in this book Aveline is on holiday with her Mum and she comes across a mystical stone circle and a surprising new friend with a difference.
There are some fantastically spooky scenes in this book and I found it thoroughly enjoyable as a middle grade book reviewer and I am confident in saying that i think any child will absolutely love this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor condition
Very poor condition for new book.
Cover has lots of sticky residue on front and back, also lots of pages are waved by what looks to be water damage.
