Jo and Kate were best friends forever, since meeting at the age of eight at boarding school. They would do anything for each other…but their relationship was full of jealousy and manipulation. They come from very different backgrounds; Jo's family are from Barnsley, her father is from working class stock and his successful construction business allows him to provide what he believes is the best education for his children, whereas Kate - or Catherine Bayden-Jones, is from old money.
The two women stay best friends for the next 30 years. Kate is married to the handsome Tom with a 6-year-old daughter, Alice. Jo widowed 2 years ago when her husband, Richard passed away suddenly and unfortunately wasn't able to have children which she so desperately wants.
This psychological thriller is set in both past (boarding school) and present, with a gradual buildup of tension with a realization that not everything is as it seems. To say more would be to risk spoilers.
The complex flawed characters are well drawn and realistic. I found myself racing towards what turned out to be an explosive and exciting ending, a twist that I didn’t see coming! Looking forward to reading more of her novels. Very enjoyable read.
Many thanks to the author and The Book Club Reviewers request group (FB) for my digital copy.
However, to be fair, I thought that it was a well-written, well thought-out novel with some interesting plot twists. I must also admit that I am new to psychological thrillers and do not usually read such dark tales, so perhaps this just isn't the right genre for me.
Basically it is a well-known story about love and betrayal with some surprises thrown in but I had a little trouble keeping concentrated while reading. There is so much not going on... there is so much thinking aloud, and drinking, drinking, drinking. This is the second book in a short time I've read where thirty-something people seem to fill their days with drinking. I have nothing against having a glass or two with friends, but I think it is too easy to have all characters do and say stupid things because they are drunk all the time.
So all in all a nice read but it lacks that 'special feeling' that would have earned it a star more.

Jo and Kate meet at St. Luke’s private school and immediately strike up a friendship. They’re inseparable, they stand up for each other, and this carries on into later life. But as both of the girls grow older, their lives take them in different directions. Kate has made a success of her life, married to her teenage crush she now lives in a beautiful house, Jo meanwhile is single and has gone through some dark times, but their friendship has still remained intact.
What immediately kept me on my toes was Kate’s husband’s advances towards Jo. Tom becomes desperate to sleep with her, but she doesn’t want to destroy her friendship with Kate, it puts her in a very uncomfortable position. If she comes clean and tells her friend, then that will probably destroy Kate’s marriage. During these scenes, the atmosphere became very tense, and I wondered just how far Tom would be prepared to go to get what he wanted, and if Jo would succumb to his feelings for her.
This is a very dark book. As more details of the characters emerged, I began to understand that they weren’t the type of people who I first thought of them to be. There are some shocking revelations about Kate and Jo’s past in this book, some which readers may find upsetting. From previous novels I’ve read by Caroline England, I can see that friendships and relationships is something she is very good at developing. I became more invested in Jo and Kate as more details about them came to light I just had to keep turning the pages to find out what was going to happen to them next.
Caroline England’s writing grabs you from the very first page and pulls you into this dark tale about how friendships can turn toxic. This is a tension filled drama that will keep you glued to the page. Dark and twisty, Betray Her makes for an excellent read.
If you ever went to boarding school as a child you have to read this book. Even if you didn’t, it is full of such interesting characters (as are all her books), such subtle tension...just engrossing.
I couldn’t put it down so decided it was more important to finish it than to work today!
Her last novel, My Husband’s Lies, opened with someone teetering on a hotel window ledge. In the short prologue to Betray Her, a day out in the country takes a nasty turn. No spoilers here, but there’s nothing like a huge shock right at the beginning of a novel to keep you turning the pages! It’s also a reminder that in England’s dark and twisted version of suburbia – or in this case the countryside – life is a dangerous business.
Jo Wragg and Kate Bayden-Jones have been best chums since their first day at boarding school, despite coming from different sides of the track. While Kate was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, butcher’s daughter Jo has to endure the taunts of girls and teachers alike. ‘The Barnsley Ragamuffin,’ according to Matron!
Thirty years on, Kate still seems to have it all; handsome hubby, adorable daughter and an exquisitely furnished farmhouse in the Peak District. Now in her late 30s and widowed, Jo longs for a child…
Moving between past and present, the story is told through Jo’s eyes - unusually for England, whose first two novels employed several narrative voices. From the start, however, there are hints that all is not as it seems. A twisty-turny rollercoaster ride right up to the shock finale! Gripping stuff - her best novel yet!
