Despite warnings from Lord Canterville that their new home is haunted and that several family have fled form it in the middle of the night the Otis family chooses to go forward with their relocation. Almost immediately the Otis Family discovers that the stories are true and that their house is haunted by the ghost of Sir Simon. It is Sir Simon's intent not to share the house with anyone, but the Otis family is not like previous families that Sir Simon has scared off in the past. Narrated by the ghost himself, this Gothic ghost story takes the reader on many unexpected twists and turns. Wilde at his comic best.

Physical copy not worth space on bookshelf
For $7, I expected a better quality printing of this single classic short story. The cover is matte, it's as thin as a pamphlet, there is no preliminary matter (title page, ect.); and, the last page shows it was printed the day after I ordered it.If you're debating on buying this versus a collection of Wilde's short stories for just a couple dollars more from a different publisher, go for the collection. Two stars for now as I have yet to read through it and see if there are errors in the printing.

I loved this book when I was young, but it doesn't *quite* hold up to adult reading. The expected tongue in cheek dialog and the story itself are engaging, but it somehow gross more like a rough draft, like Wilde fully expected to flesh it out a bit, but somehow forgot.

An amusing story in typical Wilde style of an ancient English ghost confronting a stolid down-to-earth American family who refuse to be frightened by his outlandish antics. The despondent ghost finally decides to return to the fields of the dead and is aided in this last venture by Georgina Otis, the lovely daughter of the American politician. In return, he gives her a box of priceless jewels which become the topic of all the high society dos. Written in ornate, nineteenth century English, the book is a treat for those interested in the beauties of the English language. However, the story which is sparkling and witty in the first half begins to pall, in fact, get rather tedious and overly sentimental in the second. All said and done, the book is worth a read if one can tolerate Wilde's wordiness.

I love The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Happy Prince, and having just watched the film about Wilde with Stephen Fry, I thought it was about time I read something else by him. This short story popped up and has made me want to read more of his work. It's eerie, macabre, funny and innocent, and I can imagine telling it to my little boys in a few years around a campfire.

One thing I'd say is this book says it's illustrated, but if it is the pictures don't show on my Kindle Fire HD.
