For everyone who has enjoyed playing and advancing characters in computer and online games, this series is for you. This is a side story about Frank, a member of 'original sin' who we all know as a weaker of the members of the guild. It is a side quest he undertakes to become stronger. He runs north of the twighlight throne into an unexplored portion of the map and discovers a realm to grow and learn more about his animal skills. It is a story of the trials and turbulations he undergoes to become a formidable member. The story line is probably the best side story in the series and rivals the storyline of the creation of the twilight throne. You get great character development and growth as Frank undergoes his challenges. I have read many good litrpg novels and judge them mainly by my willingness to put the book down. I couldn't stop reading this novel from start to finish and completed this book in one day(with very little sleep). It is well written and will keep you enthralled.

There are not many authors who deliver the goods every time. Mr. Bagwell's Awaken Online series is a remarkable study in consistency and quality. Characters are realistic and relatable. The situations they find themselves in constantly ask the reader to figure out a way to solve the problem. The solution is in the core values of the players. People find that the good thing is not always the easy thing, but there are rewards for doing things the right way. In a world where everyone from leaders to celebrities take the easy way and get caught out, the characters prove the basic human decency of the everyman in extraordinary circumstances. Characters overcome self doubt, crises of confidence and other obstacles both in and out of the game to become better people. It gives one hope that ... perhaps, this might be possible in the lives we lead every day. Great stories, artfully communicated. Well done.

I've really enjoyed the Awaken Online series and recently burned through book 2 up through this latest offering in about a week. AO was my first introduction into the LITRPG genre and still the best example that I've read (which is admittedly not a ton but still . . .). As much as I prefer following the exploits of our favorite "evil" overlord, Jason, I still like these side quest stories that flesh out the other characters. The writing is pretty solid (though the author tends to overuse the expression "add that to the list of problems") and generally well edited (a few errors here and there but nothing too distracting).

I don't want to risk spoilers so I won't get into the plot too deeply but it follows Frank as he continues his journey of confidence and self-acceptance. Frank is pretty relatable and even though I would have thought by this point in the overall story he would have already made enough gains that he wouldn't necessarily need this side adventure it is still a worthwhile and interesting read. Frank learns, he grows, and he becomes even more of a badass. If you like the story so far, I think you'll like this addition. I am very much looking forward to the three founding members of <Original Sin> reuniting with their newfound powers. As a side note, there are elements to Unity that reminded me of Jack London's works so props to the author.

Another amazing book in the Awaken Online Series. This is the third book in the series that ventured away from the main character, Jason's, story. First it was in "Retribution" where it followed Riley. Then it was in "Apathy" where it followed Eliza. In "Unity", it followed Frank. With exceptional detail, "Unity" makes you feel like you're in the story with Frank and feeling the same things he is feeling throughout the story. I'm excited to see how Travis Bagwell brings Frank's newfound strengths into play with Jason's story when the new book comes out. This series is a must read for gamers and non-gamers alike.

First, the technical review. The book is very professionally written and edited. No noticeable errors in spelling or grammar, at least nothing I noticed.
The story itself is fast paced and fun. It doesn't take long to get into it at all, and the story has both character development and action on equal measure.
Personally, I think this story was both necessary and very well done. Necessary because Frank was always kind of the weak link, the character I found it hardest to connect to. This story builds out his character and makes him much more relatable, much more in line with the rest of his team's personalities.
Plus, he's pretty freaking awesome by the end!
A must read for fans of Awaken Online!

Frank was in need and Trevor Bagwell really delivers in this supposed “side story.” Personally, the side stories about Riley, Eliza, and Frank are actually wonderful main contributions to this series and give us a break from being in Jason’s head. If your reading this and going “what?”, go and read the full series. You’ll love it! My respect for the author is growing in leaps and bounds as Alfred offers exactly what each player needs to become more than they ever thought they could be. The tone, the prose, the build to pivotal events, the romance, it all takes you to that spot every reader wants to go. The world recedes and you are the story, living the story, and your heart is beating in time with the story. I really can’t wait for the next book. It is going to be hard to wait. Maybe I’ll reread the series, like I’ve done The Lord of the Rings, or the Harry Potter series while I wait for the next book. I hope you find it as thrilling as I do!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about Frank developing confidence in the gaming and real world
Reviewed in Canada on January 2, 2023
Frank was a very engaging secondary character in the Awaken Online series, but in this shorter book he becomes centre stage in an ordeal that grows his character, in some ways, even beyond his dominant best friend Jason. Very well and cleverly written, exploring how real the virtual reality gaming world can be, and rewarding Frank with immense courage and unique game knowledge which will surely impact the future Jason stories. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars We all have a beast inside after all
Reviewed in Mexico on September 12, 2019
I love how this series deal with inner tumoil and warring emotions. This book here particularly hit me due a single question: Is really 'the best you can be' what you want to be? Now ask yourself, if perhaps, what you want is your worst? Not your worst for yourself. But the worst for others. That monster lingering inside you never let out? That perhaps has what you lack to be happy or whole. Either way it is still you, just bad for others.
  • BeastlyMuLLeR
5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best novels in the series so far.
Reviewed in Spain on July 6, 2019
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD. READ AT OWN RISK.

One of the best novels in the series so far. I could sense Frank’s potential the moment he was introduced in previous books, and the way we discovered through his past memories how he felt and thought of himself. Also, from the moment he found that book in the dungeon, it was clear it could turn him into an incredibly powerful character. And yet how Mr. Bagwell has managed to develop his character... is pure and simply AWESOME. Better than I could have imagined myself. The way Frank has evolved from an insecure kid beaten by even his own thoughts, to a self-confident warrior capable of confronting both his enemies and his own fears felt very natural, well developed and totally made sense.

And then there’s the awesome locations that Bagwell keeps gifting us. The world of AO is incredibly rich and full of potential for uncountable side quests. Bagwell always manages for each story to make sense on its own and yet allowing everything to build up and fit in perfectly.

Can’t wait to read the confirmed story on the Fire champion, as well as the next ‘big’ installment. I especially cannot wait to see what Riley and Jason will have to say to what Frank has become...
