Review
“A winner.” —Nick Bruel, New York Times bestselling author of the Bad Kitty series
“Super fun and utterly delightful.” —Gene Luen Yang, New York Times bestselling author of American Born Chinese
"Young readers will revel in the heroic antics, and older ones, like me, will be tickled by the Easter eggs strewn throughout. The sweet and funny nature of this book is expertly reflected in Yue’s energetic art and seemingly effortless line work." —New York Times
★”Neko Atsume meets The Tick in this laugh-out-loud funny, well-paced series starter…Yue’s expressive cartoons complement this enchanting story, the first in a series with a promising cast of characters—feline and otherwise.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review
“A little evil and a whole lotta fun.” —Kirkus Reviews
“A winsome mix of adventure, humor, and realistic middle grade problems, ideal for readers seeking the whimsy of Dav Pilkey’s “Dog Man” tempered with thereassuring tone of Raina Telgemeier’s work.” —School Library Journal
“A pro-girl comic to encourage adventure, entrepreneurship, and excellent, pun-filled pet names.” —BCCB
“Venable’s twisty plot swoops gleefully around Manhattan, touching on everything from animal activism to evolving relationships to a secret rescue mission, and combining to tell the story of one of the least boring summers ever.” —BookPage
“Realism and absurdity snuggle harmoniously, with such delightful dichotomies as grumpy moggy Moritz knocking over glasses as calico Jolie plays MMORPGs while donning enormous headphones.” —The Bulletin
"Sight gags, sly humor, pop-culture references, and a dollop of animal-rights activism combine to make Katie’s story a fun one." —Booklist

About the authors
Colleen Ann Felicity Venable has had many odd jobs—receptionist, book designer, bat hospital worker, lumberjack, secret Twitter ghostwriter for a very famous comedian, accidental creator of national holidays (National Pancake Day)—but she had her big break when she published Kiss Number 8, the first graphic novel written by a woman to ever be nominated for the National Book Award. She went on to win a pile of accolades and her most recent series, Katie the Catsitter, debuted at #7 on the bestseller list and has been nominated for fourteen state awards and counting.
Her other books include the humor/inspiration book The Swayze Year: You're Not Old You're Just Getting Started (co-created with Meghan Daly and illustrated by Tara O'Connor); picture books The Oboe Goes Boom Boom Boom (illustrated by Lian Cho) which won a School Library Journal Best Book award and Mervin the Sloth Is About to Do The Best Thing in the World (illustrated by Ruth Chan); and her graphic novel series Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye (illustrated by Stephanie Yue) which nominated for an Eisner for Best Publication for Kids and awarded “Best Book” recognition from Kirkus Reviews, NYPL, Bank Street, and the Junior Library Guild.
Colleen was named a Publisher's Weekly StarWatch Top 5 Finalist and now works as a full-time writer splitting her time between North Adams, MA and Brooklyn, NY.
Hi, I'm Stephanie Yue, and I draw things. I grew up in Atlanta, Beijing, and Hong Kong, and studied illustration in New York City. I got my start working at game design and animation studios while publishing my own comics. I've been working as a freelancer since 2008, taking on everything from comics lettering to sketch cards to coloring to website design. In 2010, I signed on with Barry Goldblatt Literary and I've been illustrating graphic novels, picture books, and chapter books for kids. You may even find my work in issues of SpongeBob Comics!
In my other life, I'm an extended overland scooterist, dedicated martial artist, itinerant blogger, and professional wanderer. I like riding two-wheeled things, eating and drinking all the things, and climbing things that probably weren't meant for climbing.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2023I recently bought this book for both my goddaughter (soon to be 10, finishing 4th grade) and my other honorary niece (just turned 10 and just finished 4th grade), who live on opposite sides of the country and have never met. Both girls love cats and fantasy novels, and they often like the same books (including the Familiars series and Wings of Fire).
Both girls are obsessed: their moms report that they've both read the book multiple times within a week. This book has inspired cat poetry and long kid rambles, including a convoluted explanation of why there are actually 218 cats, and how the other other cat isn't one of the 217.
Both girls are bookworms, so I can't say how this book plays to reluctant readers. One prefers regular novels most of the time (e.g. prefers the novel versions of Wings of Fire) but still loves this graphic novel. Both have decided this book/series is their new favorite thing. I am happily racking up all the auntie points... and buying them each book 2 to celebrate the end of the school year.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024My daughter, to my surprise as THIS was a surprise to her, loves this series. I will definitely be buying more as any thing to get her reading is great for me :)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2021This book is absolutely wonderful. I loved all of the cats and their quirky personalities. There was also a great storyline as well. Katie is trying to save money to go to summer camp with her best friends. She wants to do odd jobs to earn the money herself rather than accept the free voucher from her friend's mom. She has to learn to think on her feet to deal with all of the cats and their unique personalities and talents, in doing so she learns about herself as well. There was also a lot of humor in this story and I found myself laughing out loud at several points, mostly with whatever the cats were doing.
Highly recommend this graphic novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024Fifth Grader loved this and asked for the next book
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2024I liked the cats.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2021My almost eight-year-old LOVED this book. She tore through it in just three days. This is HUGE for her since she hasnt been a big reader despite all of our attempts to get her develope a love of reading. Whelp, this one did it. And I couldn't be happier!
The story is super cute and the artwork is awesome. My animal-loving daughter very much identified with the protagonist immediately. And she giggled so much at all the crazy anitcs the cats get into. Definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2023My 8 year old is into graphic novels and we got her this series for Christmas. She found it challenging at first, but was able to pick it up. It has fun appropriate themes, but reading level might be closer to end of second grade/ third grade. My daughter also reads Pizza and Taco, and PI Butterfly graphic novels for a point of reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super
I have to admit that I didn't expect this story to centre around a Superhero.
But then again, who has over 200 cats...?
So,with my disbelief well and truly suspended, the story fairly rockets along.
Saving up for summer camp by doing odd jobs, really odd jobs...
I really like the picture of Katie with her arms on the balcony, cats about her ankles and the mysterious figure in the background against the moon.
A classic scene that never gets old, brilliant.
Some parts of the story are a little far fetched, but well, why not.
It's only for entertainment and it certainly does that.
Oh,and as for the cats, they remind me of the animated Disney film The Aristocats where they can play musical instruments and dance,ha ha.
I suspect this would make a great bedtime story You know, sinc

I loved this so much! It was adorable and fun and has SO MANY incredible cats! My own cats might have been a little jealous of how much I loved this.
Seriously, read it!
