Two men. Spies. An American. A German. The year is 1942. The world is at war.In New York City, the German spy is following Nazi orders, climbing the corporate ladder. He has it all. A loving wife. A good job. A tidy house on Long Island. Everything is perfect. Until one night when his wife discovers his shocking secret. In Germany, one of the U.S. Army’s deadliest commandos parachutes to earth. His mission: wreaking havoc from behind enemy lines. But something goes terribly wrong during his jump, leaving him with a lethal injury and a crucial choice. It’s kill or be discovered. He makes the ruthless decision, killing two innocents without hesitation, knowing he’ll never be the same again. Two years later, sufficiently chastened, the two men independently claw their way back to relevance. Through meticulous analysis, the American learns of the German’s existence. He’s a soldier now, wearing the American uniform, murdering senior officers under the cloak of battle. As the parallel plots converge, the American doggedly stalks the German spy. First to Europe. Then to France. The killings intensify. A major. A colonel. A general. The hunt narrows from division, to regiment, to company. It’s a hunt for a vicious killer. It’s a hunt for the American’s doppelgänger.

From the Author

Of all my books, Doppelgänger was the easiest to write.  In fact, I finished the first draft in about 45 days.  I'm a fast writer--but, even for me, that was lightning-fast.  I think what made it so easy, and so fun, to write was the dueling characters mirroring one another.  Both characters have a dark side which also helped speed things along. (My bad guys always fly off my fingertips.)  I hope you'll findDoppelgänger as amusing to read as it was to write.

This is not my normal genre for reading, but I am so glad I decided to read it! I am female, and while I almost abhor romance novels, I'm not attracted to books about war either. This is not really about war, even though it is used for the author's canvas. The two main characters develop & evolve beautifully, and I so much appreciate that they do not fall into any sort of stereotype. An exceptional story & I highly recommend.

This story is quite a fun read. Very entertaining to the inquiring reader's mind. The author's descriptions and character development is more than adequate and follows the excellent storyline very well. The occasional swap between the German language and the English is smooth and nicely explanatory. During World War II, there was a scramble for intelligence and espionage on all fronts. The story is very intriguing with two agents (and more), two different intentions and plans - or are they? The more the reader gets into the story the more the reader is drawn into the tangle of the story. There are many turns and twists of the story that keeps the reader rolling many solutions and answers, but what is the real story? Each page has another possibility. Well written and well told. Good read.

After reading The Diaries and finding out it was MR. Driskells first book I had to read this to see if it was a "onehit wonder" it was not, this book is a HOMERUN. Having a whole semester dedicated to WWII in college history class I was afraid going in that I would be dispointed with its authenticty to timeframe and I was pleasently suprised. MR Driskell's knowledge of equipment,
weapons and munitions of the time is superior and and his placement of real life characters to time frame and theater were spot on.This was a supenseful thiller whos sensational characters took you right to the edge but never over the top of being believable and the plot twist at the end will blow your mind.I am not much for looking for hidden meanings or layers in characters nor do I want to be, however if you are looking for an edge of your seat thriller that will keep you enthralled and guessing to the end and true to the time period it is written then this book is for you.

I have read lots in this genre - and had great hopes for this book after the first 50 pages or so. The author grabbed onto a great concept - a "high concept" for a book of this type. Seemed to me he lost his way a bit, and in the end the book was a letdown.

The positives - the core characters are fascinating - and the story of their selection and training is well done. There are some appearances by historical figures which add some spice to the book.

The negatives - a plot that seemed to me to have too many "game changing" moments - could have done well with half that number. At the end, a sense of confusion and ambiguity - not the "moral ambiguity" which I have come to value in many good books. Rather, an ambiguity about the reason the author felt obligated to keep making major paradigm shifts every 40 pages or so, until it was a bit dizzying to keep up.

If you like surprises and guessing what happens next - this might be a good book for you. If you more enjoy a high concept book in which the author keeps the pedal on the metal all the way through - this may not be your thing.

This book had more twist and turns than a roller coaster. One great read having you turning pages as fast as you can. Never saw the last real twist until it hit me between the eyes. Very well written by an author with a great mind. Details where nicely done and time frame was right one.
Best read I have had in some time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is intrested in the period of history of early nineteen forties.

This is my fourth Driskell book. Loved it. The text flows like smooth silk and I really think I am in Germany during the War. I am not a military guy so the detail helps me get into the plot. Nice twist of an ending also. I particularly enjoyed the glimpse into the two main characters minds and their struggle with the job of war, that is killing. Who deserves to be killed? just soldiers or are civilians fair game? Does the end justify the means??
All in all a great read.

It's too bad Amazon doesn't allow 4.5 stars. The only reason I rated this below Driskell's other novel, The Diaries, is because I enjoyed his main character in that novel so much. This novel was less about loving the main character and more about being mesmerized by the cosmic collision of the two main characters. When it finally happened (and being mindful of not spoiling it for future readers) it absolutely knocked me out of the bed. Driskell pulled off a Deaver-esque twist that I'm still thinking about. Overall, Doppelganger is a very fast, very fun read that will leave you spinning after you're done reading. In fact, I may go back and read it again.

This is the 2nd book I've read from Mr. Driskell. I was blown away by his 1st effort, and this one does not let up. This is a gritty story that (early on) gives you the sense of where it is going, but the fun was in finding out how he will get you there. It is also written by someone who is very historically versed, which assists in an already engaging story-line. The pace never slows and provides a big payoff at the end. Great read. Can't wait for the next one.

Really enjoyed 'Doppelgänger'! Very clever interweaving story of two spies on opposite sides in World War 2 with one or two surprises. Well worth a read if you like World War 2 thrillers.
