Beckon the sea,
I'll come to thee....
Shed seven tears,
perchance seven years....

At the age of ten, Gwen Cooke had a strange encounter with a boy with dark, slightly tilted eyes. He came to her on the beach, whispered strange words in her ear, and then disappeared. Shortly thereafter, her family moved away from their seaside home and Gwen never saw the boy again.
Now seventeen, Gwen is returning to her childhood home. Her nana asked her to come. But Gwen knows it's time to go back for another reason: She yearns for the sea. Perhaps the sea itself is calling to her. Perhaps the memory of the boy and his haunting words are drawing her back to the place they met. Perhaps it's time for her to face her destiny.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–Gwen, 17, has returned to a small beach community seven years after the scandal that forced her family to flee. Now she's spending the summer working at her grandmother's inn and hoping to put the past behind her. The very first morning she's there, however, she meets Jesse, a boy who claims he already knows her, and knows what happened all those years ago. Overcome by her attraction to him, Gwen spends more and more time with him and realizes that he has secrets he isn't telling her. Her grandmother's tales of selkies foreshadow what is to come, and readers will probably guess the outcome long before Gwen does. If they can get past the sentimental title that belies the real story, the romance and mystery will keep them reading until the very end. Expect this to be popular where retold myths and fairy tales are in demand.–Ginny Collier, Dekalb County Public Library, Chamblee, GA

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. Unlike Farley's middle-grade Phantom Stallion series, her first YA novel is not equestrian in theme. Her focus, however, is still on a transcendent bond between a girl and an animal--in this case, a sea lion selkie. When Gwen and her parents abruptly move away from their coastal family seat, her clairvoyant grandmother predicts that forces "no mortal can imagine and no female can resist" will draw her back. Sure enough, when Gwen, 17, returns for a summer job, she falls for exotic wanderer Jesse and finds herself immersed in a modern, California version of a Scottish selkie myth. It takes time for her to acknowledge Jesse's sea lion nature (perhaps too long, considering his taste for raw bait); eventually, though, Gwen accepts his alien qualities along with the tragic knowledge that their time together is fleeting. Farley's numerous supporting characters and subplots lend more complication than meaningful depth, but Gwen's convincing, contemporary voice, by turns resolutely practical and head-over-heels for a guy who "kisses like an ocean god," will draw many teens into one of folklore's lesser-known beauty-and-the-beast romances. This is one of my favorite books. I have to read it every couple of years, so I bought the Kindle version to keep it handy. Excellent! It has well-rounded characters who seem like real people, not paper dolls. I was drawn into the story deeply and immediately. The legend is part of my ethnic heritage, so I was very interested in the selkie part of it, too, which was extremely well done.

Seven Tears for Seven Years is a delightful story that mixes a contemporary theme with ancient myth and magic. Set on the Oregon Coast, Terri Farley brings vivid characters to life and gives an authentic voice to each of them. This perfect YA level book has just the right amount of romantic tension and edginess without going overboard.

A seventeen year old girl, working at her grandmother's inn for the summer, falls in love with a boy/man who could possibly be a selkie. Her old friends become bothersome, the townie thugs are out to hurt the sea lions, and Midsummer's Eve is just around the corner. Lots of great atmosphere and a good story line will keep you from putting this one down.

This was a really, really, really good book! i am a lover of horse books, so i usually dont read a book unless it has something to do with horses, but when i first saw the cover of this wonderful book, i knew it had something special about it. but if you're a fan of Terri Farley's PHANTOM STALLION books, you may/may not like this book. if you are a die-hard lover of books about horses, you probably wont like this book since it has NOTHING to do with horses at all. but if you like a bit of fantasy, romance and myth, you'll just love this book. Both ways, you should really get it. The reason i gave it four out of five stars, though, is becouse it is a bit predictable, like other people said. but you probably wont guess the beautiful ending, though. All in all, it's a great book and you should read it.

Nice little book-I read it first so I knew what I was giving my 12 year old daughter-and it's fine. I think it's right up her alley. I read it in a few hours(not sure what all the adult raves are about) it's a simple and a little magical story, I think she kisses the boy? Nothing traumatizing, I think any preteen or teen would like this book. Girly and romantic

It started out cool but seemed like the author lost interest and wanted to hurry up and end it, it was just okay.

This is my most favorite book in the entire world - I read it every year in June (sometimes two or three times a year). I bought this copy as a gift for a dear friend of mine, and she loved the book, too! The ending is imperfect, but it is a selkie tale...

This book is simply awful. The plot doesn't kick in until 3/4 of the way through the book, and even then it's a very poorly handled romance. The characters are inconsistently described in both physical depiction and behavior. Horrible phrases such as "pathologically handsome" that don't even make sense are used both frequently and meant to be taken seriously. The protagonist is bland and wishy-washy. The Selkies don't even make sense within the internal mythology of the novel.

Please, I implore you, give this one a miss. This is a sloppy, poorly written excuse for a teen romance novel that just cannot deliver on what it aims to accomplish.

I really didn't like this book at all. I kept waiting for it to pick up and it never did. It was predictable and boring I really wouldn't waste your time. The only good part about this book, if you decide to read it, is that its short so its over quickly.

Found this book in my local library 15 years ago, when I was just 11 years old. I have read this book every few years since and the magic of it still enchants me. I wish there were a follow up book.
