Great finish, awesome colors, great story
This is just a bizarre and fun back that works in the wackyness of Marty McFly and Doc Brown helping humanity and a few surviving autobots battle the Decepticons. The strength of the story is its commitment to its premise and its big ridiculous ideas. The book doesn't have a whole lot of character insight or some great emotional connections. At four issues, it doesn't really need it. It just tells an audacious concept combing two great eighties franchises in one

The storyline predominantly follows the movements through time of Marti McFly and, from his perspective, things take place directly after the first ‘Back to the future’ film. The plot revolves around the idea that after a brief intervention by Rumble a chain of events is set in motion that results in the Decepticons ruling earth in Marti’s future. Most of the action is set in 2015, the same year that featured in the second ‘Back to the Future’ film.
Of course, story wise, things inevitably result in a big reset. Although this is the obvious conclusion it is the only really viable one and there is a lot of fun to be had in reaching there. Along the way the resolution also involves a favoured method from the third incarnation of another time travelling Doctor (such a thing might well be expected from the author).
The ‘Terminator’ crossover was based around a similar scenario, but that was treated in a much more serious fashion. This comic indulges in a little more fun with it, so feels significantly different.
The other Transformers crossovers have typically used similar core figures with, perhaps, the odd less well known one or two. This comic doesn’t do that so much. Starscream and Bumblebee still play substantial roles but a lot of others such as the likes of Megatron, Soundwave and Optimus Prime play much smaller parts than they usually do.
It is Rodimus Prime (who doesn’t usually get a look in during these crossovers) rather than Optimus who is the leader of the Autobot resistance in the 2015 setting. This is roughly in keeping with the eighties Generations 1 continuity.
However, just like Ectotron in the ‘Ghostbusters’ crossover, the main Transformer of the story is Gigawatt who actually transforms into the time travelling DeLorean of which there was a toy figure produced. He is a decent character but not as individualistic or memorable as Ectotron.
Gigawatt is not the only ‘Back to the Future’ inspired Transformer though. This makes for a couple of nice surprises. One of these, Skilz, also seems to serve as an occasional narrator. He would also make an interesting Core Class figure.
Other than Marti McFly the only other humans with major roles are Biff and, obviously, Doc Brown. Biff is used really well, but it might have been better if Doc Brown had a bit more interaction with the Transformer characters.
All in all, it’s an entertaining read worthy of two cult franchises that celebrates the thirty-fifth anniversary of ‘Back to the Future’.
