For fans of the Chronicles of Narnia comes the first book in the Wildwood Chronicles, the New York Times bestselling fantasy adventure series by Colin Meloy, lead singer of the Decemberists, and Carson Ellis, acclaimed illustrator of The Mysterious Benedict Society. Now in paperback!

Wildwood captivates readers with the wonder and thrill of a secret world within the landscape of a modern city. It feels at once firmly steeped in the classics of children's literature and completely fresh. The story is told from multiple points of view, and the book features more than eighty illustrations, including six full-color plates, making this an absolutely gorgeous object.

In Wildwood, Prue and her friend Curtis uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval—a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

The bestselling trilogy from Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis consists of Wildwood, Under Wildwood, and Wildwood Imperium.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Meloy has an immediately recognizable verbal style and creates a fully realized fantasy world…. Ellis’s illustrations perfectly capture the original world and contribute to the feel of an instant timeless classic. Further adventures in Wildwood cannot come quickly enough. — School Library Journal (starred review)

WILDWOOD is an irresistible, atmospheric adventure - richly imagined and richly rewarding. — Trenton Lee Stewart, New York Times bestselling author of The Mysterious Benedict Society

This book is like the wild, strange forest it describes. It is full of suspense and danger and frightening things the world has never seen, and once I stepped inside I never wanted to leave. — Lemony Snicket

A satisfying blend of fantasy, adventure story, eco-fable and political satire with broad appeal; especially recommended for preteen boys. — Kirkus Reviews

WILDWOOD is a beautiful object and a beautiful read. One half fairy tale, one half coming of age story, one half unrepentantly gorgeous work of art, this book is overflowing with gifts. — Jonathan Safran Foer

Dark and whimsical, with a true and uncanny sense of otherworldliness, WILDWOOD is the heir to a great tradition of stories of wild childhood adventure. It snatched me up and carried me off into a world I didn’t want to leave. — Michael Chabon

From the Back Cover

Prue McKeel's life is ordinary. That is, until her brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken to the Impassable Wilderness, a dense, tangled forest on the edge of Portland. No one's ever gone in—or at least returned to tell of it.

So begins an adventure that will take Prue and her friend Curtis deep into the Impassable Wilderness. There they uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval—a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

Colin Meloy is the charismatic lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists, a highly celebrated (and uncommonly literary) band that has sold in excess of 1 million records. Colin has been recognized as much for his musical abilities—his ear for inventive and timeless melodies and his lilting vocals—as he has been for his unmatched lyrical prowess. Crafting each song as a vivid, imaginative story unto itself, he’s become one of the most distinctive and appreciated voices of our time. WILDWOOD marks Colin’s debut as children’s author. I listened to the book (Amanda Plummer narrates and she is excellent). But I also wanted a physical copy as it really is a classic story. It is an imaginative yarn woven through Portland's giant park. I enjoyed the universe building. It was a bit more violent than I expected it to be. Might be better for teens and adults, than young kids. Unless they are mature readers... I would have done fine with it when I was eleven as I was already reading Homer by then... but some parents/kids might find the amount of bloodshed a little surprising. But it is a big tale of politics between three geographical entities and two young kids who find themselves at the center of things. I liked Curtis's evolution from clueless but well intentioned, to a boy with confidence and direction.

For the past several years-since eye surgery-I have been buying my 'books' primarily from Audible. I decided to purchase this good in paper format due to the number of negative comments about the narrator on the Audible book. I'm quite glad I did!

I've been reading this aloud to my 9 year old grand daughter, who is a big fan of her own collection of Audible books which I have purchased for her. The fast couple of weeks, I've been reading this delightful book to her before she falls asleep. We snuggle down in my bed and I read while she listens. Words she doesn't understand, she asks me about and she seems to enjoy, very much, my reading to her. This is something I used to do to my own children in the 1960s-70s-and 80s, when my children were younger.

Reading aloud, one grasps a true sense of this novel, the adventure of Prue and her search for her brother, Max. Their discovering of what the Wildwood really is and so on. I find this book wonderful for such a read and have to admit to reading ahead because I was caught up in the story and didn't want to stop.

The prose in writing is almost surrealistic - as a Portland, Oregon native, the referencing he streets and cities that I'm familiar with is, additionally, a nice experience. Portland isn't like New York City, where novel after novel is based in the surroundings so having little Portland drawn out and put to good use is wonderful.

I hike in Forest Park, where the Impassable Wilderness/Wildwood is located. Since I began reading, my hikes have become more interesting as I try to decide if a scene takes place here or there. Kudos to the author for imagination and for "writing what one knows".

The last time I became so drawn in to a story based in PDX was the Grimm TV series. The Chelsea Cain mysteries are also based here but I didn't enjoy the referencing quite as much as Wildwood.

The author has a wonderful imagination and being able to pen a longish novel that appeals to both a 71 year old grand mother and a 9 year old child is indicative of a real talent. Kudos and keep those stories coming!

This is one of the best books I've ever read to my kids (and we read constantly!) They loved the story and were hooked from early on, and the illustrations are perfect as well. The characters are all interesting and have depth, and the adventure the kids go on is fantastic. Living in Portland I especially loved the way the magical world of the story is weaved in with the real world, making it seem like the impassible wilderness really was just a short walk away. We've started on the next book (Under Wildwood) and are loving it as well, but I'll review that one as soon as we're done.

Thank you for writing and illustrating this! (I would love to see Wes Anderson turn this into a movie by the way...)

From The Decemberists, Colin Meloy has brought us the next fold in his genius! His music has always been very narrative so it is no wonder how enjoyable his book is. Taking place in the forests around Portland, there is a world you are completely unaware of! I dont think I have ever been pulled into a book so fast. The story starts out with a baby being kidnapped by a murder of crows. How could you not want to read on?! What possible use for a baby could crows have?! Each chapter just pulls you in further and further and every moment is magic. I'm excited to read the sequel Under Wildwood and am very excited for future Wildwood books as well as anything else Colin Meloy thinks up in teh genius head of his! I highly suggest buying this book and devouring it upon it's arrival on your doorstep.

The illustrations are what attracted me at first, I follow Carson Ellis’s work and love it. When I opened the amazon package and saw the book I felt so thrilled, it is a jewl in itself. The story is full of amazing characters, it is witty and there are plenty of surprises.
