Missionary Stew follows political fundraiser Draper Haere on a quest to uncover the secret behind a right-wing coup in an unnamed Central american country. He seeks the information in order to get dirt on his boss's opponent in the 1984 US Presidential election.

Haere's pursuit of the truth repeatedly puts Haere's life in danger, as the powers-that-be stop at nothing to keep the episode buried. Along the way, Haere carries on an affair with the wife of his candidate and enlists the aid of Morgan Citron, an almost-Pullitzer winning journalist who has recently been released from an African prison where the prisoners where fed human flesh--the titular missionary stew.

Together, Citron and Haere face up against cocaine traffickers, Latin American generals, corrupt US officials, and Citron's estranged, tabloid-publisher mother.

This is a big wonderful mishmash of a story. By the time I was halfway through, I didn't recall who was after whom or what the McGuffin was, but that made it no less entertaining. It gets sorted at the end.

Morgan Citron, a journalist recently released from captivity by the Central African Empire's cannibalistic emperor, is at loose ends. He takes a job as a property manager in Southern California. One of his tenants is the ditzy daughter of a Florida tycoon formerly in the cocaine trade.

Draper Haere is a political operative, a fundraiser for, among others, a young governor considering a presidential run.

Haere narrowly dodges death while driving with an old friend about to let him in on a big secret. Various powerful forces seem not to want the secret told. Haere thinks knowing the secret can get his guy elected president.

Citron's mother is a tabloid publisher who worked for the OSS during the war.

The book has all of Ross Thomas's usual charm. Like the offbeat names: Velveeta Keats, Baldwin Veatch, Jack Replogle, Draper Haere and more.

There are the ties to real history. The inside baseball on political skulduggery. The allusions to political history, like LBJ's unprintable advice on how to win an election.

Haere collects furniture with political pedigrees. This piece belonged to Huey Long; that one, to John L. Lewis. There's a guy that Haere believes may be related to James G. Blaine. You know, the Continental Liar From the State of Maine, who lost to Grover Cleveland.

There are the characters' colorful and weird sex lives. Who they do it with, it dawned on me at the end, was a clue separating the good guys from the bad guys. Thomas takes a deeper look at this than some might. Can a good guy have an extramarital affair?

Most of all there's a relentless whimsicality. No one pulls this off quite like Ross Thomas.

This book (which I just re-read on Kindle) has a special place for me because it was the first one of Thomas' books I read. Caught by the catchy title I quickly realized I was in the hands of a different kind of master. By the time I hit lines like 'the disease he no longer suffered from was curiosity" I was hooked and would go on to devour every book Thomas ever wrote and pray that more would somehow come to light.
If you haven't got started on the remarkable bibliography of this engaging American crime/politics writer, this would be as good a place to start as any. Rank him with greats like Elmore Leonard, Thomas Perry, Laurence Shames, Lawrence Block... the guys who do crime fiction different, and better.

Being an avid mystery fiction reader, I do not know how I overlooked Ross Thomas. I was introduced to him last year by Amazon, who suggested him as an author I would enjoy based on previous orders. How right you were! Since then, I've enjoyed 13 Thomas novels. Everything about them is appealing: the titles, the interlocking relationships among his characters, the expected unexpected twists of plots, the subtle droll humor and the uncluttered prose style which grips until each novel's all-to-quick ending. An enduring American literary icon. Ross Thomas, I'm pleased to have met your novels.

I trust you remember who ran for President again in 1984. One character calls him a fascist. This is set in central America against the background of the goings on there, by a writer who knew how it was and describes it beautifully. My favorite Ross Thomas among all my favorite Ross Thomas'. Don't miss it!

Ross Thomas just had the knack of creating unusual situations, and unusual characters, and then having everything interact toward a satisfying conclusion. This book is another one of his well-crafted thriller-type writings, where you are introduced to a disparate cast of characters who seem totally unrelated to each other but, by the end of the book, all fit nicely into the confines of the plot. This one is a bit more gruesome than some of his, for there are several deaths, but they are all in the service of advancing the plot line. Read this book and see a master of the genre at work!

Ross Thomas rarely misses a beat, and this book hits all the right notes. It is classic Thomas: lean, ironic, and plotted like a Rolex, complicated and reliable.

The story is a good four-star tale. I have purchased this in book form twice in the past. I was pleased to see it in the Kindle Store, and I bought it again. I enjoy having my books available to me at any time. My issue is the apparent total lack of concern when the file was created. Mr. Thomas wrote so well that total immersion is guaranteed. Sadly, this Kindle file has so many grammar issues that the reader is jolted out of the story repeatedly. Whatever software that was used to create the digital copy of the manuscript left far too many hyphenated words in the middle of a sentence, and an almost comical number of three-word run-ons, suchasthis. Folks, this file costs ten bucks. Even if only nine other buyers are found, haven't we paid enough for an editor to load the file in a word processor and look for errors? I don't want to appear naive as I say that a company selling books should be more protective of its authors; we all know that the books sold here are a simple commodity, just like the gigabit switch I bought here last month. Still, shouldn't someone be trying to convert these books accurately?

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant Thriller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 2, 2010
Anyone who has read a Ross Thomas novel will know what to expect: elegant, stylish prose, cunningly-plotted adventure and a fair few surprises along the way.

This is the tale of Morgan Citron, from a vile African jail to US political wrongdoing and murder to a South American revolution. There are good guys and bad guys (and his blackmailing, ex WW2 spy, tabloid editor mother is one of the worst) and there's enough twists and turns to distract anyone from the mince pies -- or whatever you're eating at the time you read this review :)

Don't buy it if you want graphic sex and guts spilling on every page, do buy it if you want an example of a novelist craftsman at his best.
