More terrifying than that is the beast’s master, a wild man who insists Joselyn is his bride by right, and plans to seal his claim in blood.
Dragon-rider, Hollen, has finally captured the woman of his dreams, though he quickly learns waiting for her was less than half the battle. His new bride wants nothing to do with him, and Hollen knows he only has one chance to change her mind.
Their wills pitted against each other, Joselyn will go to any lengths to free herself from this savage and fulfill her marriage contract. Her father’s life depends upon it. To win her over, Hollen will do whatever he must, even if it means keeping secrets.
Even as she plots her escape, Joselyn begins to wonder if one can also be bound by a duty to their own heart.

About the author
When Denali Day was trying to figure out “what to be when she grew up” she noticed all her written stories featured a scene where the beautiful heroine patched up the wounds of a gallant hero. So she decided to become a nurse. Twelve years and two degrees later, she realized all she ever really wanted was to be a writer.
Now she lives in the midwest with her adoring husband, a real life gallant hero, and their two wicked goblins (children). When she isn’t writing she’s reading and when she’s not doing either of those things she’s probably plundering the fridge for something she can smother in whipped cream.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2021I feel like the only appropriate way to start this review is to first tell you that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK, THE CHARACTERS, THE PLOT - HECK, THE WHOLE FANTASY WORLD IT WAS SET IN. However, this is an adult fantasy with some more heart wrenching and intense scenes so below I am listing a few trigger warnings just to be helpful for anyone in search of amazing Romance, but needs the heads up!
TW: Talk of non-con sex (never occurs between any of the main characters, only spoken about in past tense of others), attempted rape, and some gore.
Okay, now! Hollen The Soulless was an absolute RIDE of a book. If you've heard through the grapevine that this book is fairly LITE on spice PR is fade to black with the sex scenes... Then you would be very much correct my friends! BUT! I do believe that Denali Day did explicitly state in the summary and promo of the book that this would be the case. Therefore, I am still rating this a 5 star read, even if the buildup and cover had me alluded to more heavier special content. Which, with that said, do not let that deter you from reading this book! Now, another consideration to make is where you are in your reading. If you are looking for smut, then this ain't it - but say you just got done with Den Of Vipers because booktok told you to try it...and you need something a little cleaner - a break - but still want romance. Then this boo is perfect for you!
Yes I know, that was a very specific scenario. However, I feel that this book contains a lot of amazing qualities and genuinely great moments, but if it is read with the wrong expectations or mindset, than yes as a reader you will not enjoy it. My favorite part of this book hands down was the friendships, family ties and character development that not only the MC's had but all of the characters! I fell in love with Hollens brothers, and I cannot wait to read of their back stories and journey to romance in the next books. The youngest brother Sigvard absolutely captured my heart, and I have to know what happened to Ivan! Denali was very good at giving you a taste of all these characters and alluding to how much more there was to still discover about them. Furthermore, I have to give major props to Denali for the fantasy world and the political workings she built into this fantasy romance! Do not sleep on this amazing background and the political subplots occurring! It was genuinely so well done, which is something we don't always get in fantasy romance, but I do believe Denali could definitely handle even more high fantasy writings in the future. And I would love to see her do it! The battle scenes were intense and perfectly detailed, the cultural details of the Dokiri were realistic and fantastical, the emotional turmoil inside of and between the characters waa heart wrenching, and the loving devotion showed in the romance left me totally satisfied as a romance reader (ok, but yes, one sex scene would have been a plus). So to conclude, give this a shot! Especially if you're looking for a thicker read, because at 400+ plus pages this baby took me all day to enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2022The world and character building is great. The story is original and immersive.
I think the problems I have with this book are based on my personal preferences and aversions.
The main character is a child. Only 18. In that way of a child she is ignorant, blind, and stubborn. Her character drives me insane. I struggled to finish this book
However, I continued because of my love for the main male character.
Also, the flaws to her, are because she was an abused manipulated child. So, I saw the logic to her character, I just couldn't put the pieces together with the weakness of her character and the strength. They didn't fit right for me. I see how the author came up with her flaws I just felt her strengths should have squashed those particular flaws way sooner.
I also personally struggled with a couple scenes strictly for personal trigger reasons. The extent on one scene's violence in particular was just....gah 😖
IN THE END though, the girl saw reason and got her mind straight and I was mostly satisfied.
I struggled through the first twenty-some chapters, but I'm not upset I read it.
I don't think I'll jump to the other books but maybe one day I'll go in search of the other brothers stories.
So take this as you will. I'm confused with how I feel so.... 🤷🏼♀️
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2024This is a story of a broken, yet very fiery and STUBBORN heroine and her “barbaric” hero who loved her unconditionally and helped to heal and make her whole. However, it took a lot of patience on the H’s part and some tribulations for her to endure before she would finally admit her love for him. I very much enjoyed the story, but to me, the ending was bittersweet. He sacrifices a LOT for her.
I cannot say if I will continue this series. It was well-written and kept me engaged. I think my biggest disappointment-which will be to some reader’s satisfaction-was the complete lack of spice. It is a S-L-O-W burn, and when the fire finally combusts the reader is left without any real satisfaction. All of it occurs off-page, and the most detailed descriptions we are given are of their kisses. Still, a very good read. If you are into fantasy and romance without the spicy details, I think you will enjoy this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024This is a very difficult review for me to write because I am very torn on different aspects of the book. I really love the characters, the ideas for the story itself, and the various conflicts and resolutions, however, I felt like the book dragged on and on and on! It felt like I was listening to this book forever and there were things that could have been cut out to make the story flow more succinctly. Honestly, the only reason I finished listening to the story was because...First I wanted to know what happened to the main characters and Second the narrator was phenomenal! If it was not for the narrator I am positive I would have just quit reading the book all together. I enjoyed that the audible had the extra story and cut scenes/information from the author, that was a nice addition. I feel bad saying this however overall, I'm not sure that I would recommend this book. Although, the only way I would recommend it is if you are listening to it on Audible so that way you can hear Shane East's narration. That is the main thing that saved the story for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense, exciting and romantic medieval fantasy
What a fascinating story! I loved everything about this with a few minor exceptions. Hollen and his brothers were my favourite characters - each one had their own unique and interesting personality. I liked Joselyn too. She was torn in different directions between doing her duty to save her father and the growing attraction to Hollen. I enjoyed reading about the various customs in Hollen's tribe and all about wyverns and dragons.
Joselyn was travelling to meet her bridegroom who she had never seen before in order to save her father from the Kings wrath by having an arranged marriage. Suddenly a giant beast swooped down from the sky and grabbed her from her horse. She was taken by the savage who was on the beast's back to the mountain where he lived as he had chosen her for his bride. Hollen was an amazing character. He was so kind, patient and caring towards Joselyn waiting for her to accept him. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't mind the rape scene (which didn't happen) as it ramped up the tension in the story.
There was a lot of drama, danger, bravery, twisted people, loyalty, romance and my favourite of all - slow, slow burn. Although I like some steamy scenes in my books, I was so engrossed in this story that I didn't notice they weren't there.
One minor thing I didn't like was the expression "you lush" which is a very modern one and has no place in a medieval fantasy. Around 3/4 of the way through the book it seemed to drag a little and would have been better cut down. As opposed to this the ending was too short. The final thing I wasn't happy with was what happened to Hollen in the dungeon - I'm an idealist.
I was so riveted by this story from the beginning and am excited to read more from this author who is new to me. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from start to finish!
Hollen the Soulless is a well written and beautiful love story with great chemistry between the characters and impressive world building. Joselyn is courageous and stubborn, but due to her upbringing, plagued with feelings of worthlessness and misplaced loyalty to her family. Surviving the many pitfalls along the way, and realizing the steadfastness of Hollen’s love for her, Joselyn comes to the decision she owes it to herself to explore her love for Hollen and embrace all the possibilities of a life with him in Bedmeg. This is a fantastic story that kept me reading late into the night and captivated me until the last page. I can’t wait to read the brothers’ stories as the series continues.
I received an ARC via Booksprout in exchange for my honest review and enjoyed this book so much I have also purchased my own copy 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars wow what a story
I was just blown away by this book. It is slow paced and at the beginning I struggled to get into it. After the first major event I was hooked. I really appreciated how the story had time to evolve in weeks as opposed to they fell in love with each other in a matter of days. The writer really explored all angles and I was just so into the book. Towards the end I was almost crying for Hollen and the events that transpired but oh my it was so heart gripping. It I could read some parts though my fingers I would !
