Perfect for readers of Song for a Whale and Counting by 7s, a neurodivergent girl campaigns for a memorial when she learns that her small Scottish town used to burn witches simply because they were different.

"A must-read for students and adults alike." -School Library Journal, Starred Review

Ever since Ms. Murphy told us about the witch trials that happened centuries ago right here in Juniper, I can’t stop thinking about them. Those people weren’t magic. They were like me. Different like me.

I’m autistic. I see things that others do not. I hear sounds that they can ignore. And sometimes I feel things all at once. I think about the witches, with no one to speak for them. Not everyone in our small town understands. But if I keep trying, maybe someone will. I won’t let the witches be forgotten. Because there is more to their story. Just like there is more to mine.

Award-winning and neurodivergent author Elle McNicoll delivers an insightful and stirring debut about the European witch trials and a girl who refuses to relent in the fight for what she knows is right.

From the Publisher

My name is Addie. I am eleven years old, and I am autistic.

Centuries ago, being different was dangerous.

But I think different is good.

We need all kinds of differences in the world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A Peter Blue Book Award Winner for Best Story of the Year!

"This debut novel from neurodivergent author McNicoll will bring readers to tears and have them cheering for Addie as she learns how much she has to offer the world."
-School Library Journal, Starred Review

"The author, herself neurodivergent, imbues Addie’s unapologetically autistic perspective with compassion and insight."
-Kirkus Reviews

Whether they’re facing similar neurodivergent challenges or not, readers will appreciate Addie’s honesty, and they may follow her lead in reconsidering history.”
–The Bulletin

"The writer (autistic herself) busts some myths about neuro-divergency as she presents a flawed, loving, believable family and a convincing, nuanced, and very likable main character with a distinctive voice.”
–The Horn Book

This is an awesome book with great characters and neurodivergent representation! I have loved every book by Elle McNicoll that I have read so far. Also has been made into an amazing TV show where every neurodivergent character is played by a neurodivergent actress (available on the free BYU TV app). This book is not just for kids, although it was written for them; it is a wholesome and heartwarming read for adults as well. As a late diagnosed autistic, this is the kind of book that I wish I had read growing up.

A rare look into what it means to be autistic. A must read for anyone who lives or works with an autistic person and/or their family.

This is an important book for all to read. It’s entertaining, brings the reader through many different emotions, and teaches something to make our lives better. We each have a spark of Truth within. Do we have the courage to recognize it in others despite the norms in which we are embedded?

Addie and her sister are on the autism spectrum. This was an amazing insight to understand the obstacles, triumphs, and experiences that they, as well as other autistic people, experience. It also brings into view anyone who was singled out for being different. While facing some of the difficulties she faced, I still loved how she overcame and grew through her experiences.

A kind of spark is a very well written book but not exactly my favorite. I think it is a complete story but lacks in details

I really enjoyed reading this as I was late-diagnosed autistic. Obviously an easy read for a 20 year old but I love being able to relate to characters. Very cute book.

This book was a beautiful, poignant read full of heart and heartache, pain and hope.

It was an incredibly well-written portrayal of the struggles Addie faces, along with the beautiful friendship she develops with a girl who treats her with kindness and a desire to be understanding and supportive. Addie's family relationships are complex and nuanced and wonderful to experience through the pages of the book.

This is the type of story that I feel every kid, and adult, could benefit from reading, whether it helps them to feel seen, because they're different in some way as well, or helps them see a perspective they might never experience and gain greater understanding of a life that's vastly different than their own in some ways, yet with many of the same struggles of wanting to be heard, of dealing with bullies, and of wanting friends and family who see them and support them for who they are.

I felt like I learned so much through reading Addie's story, and as someone who struggles with sensory processing disorder, there were elements I could relate to, as well.

This is a good story for a preteen. The protagonist is on the spectrum but is accepted by her family and some others. Overall, she has a pretty good self-concept and she succeeds at the task she sets for herself. The reader will gain greater acceptance of difference and see that a young person's determination can pay off. In addition, the book addresses the historical treatment of witches in Scotland, paralleling that with current suspicion of those who are different.

This book is meant for middle-grade age, but I am 21 and bought this book because there is not a lot of of media out there that represents autistic girls. This book did that representation so well! I appreciate media about autism that focuses on the good aspects of autism, while still acknowledging the negatives. It was really great to read something that focused on what is often called the “autistic sense of justice”. I relate so much to Addie, the main character, and also to her sister Keedie. They are both autistic, and their autism presents very similar to mine. I wish this book existed when I was younger. I think it would have really helped me when I was in middle school. I definitely recommend this book, especially for autistic girls who are looking for something to relate to.

This book is going straight onto my daughter's bookshelf when she's old enough to read it, I think all young people, autistic or not, need to read this. Adults too if I'm being honest!!

I saw the CBBC TV show recently and it moved me to floods of tears. I'd bought the book even before the first episode was over.

A quick read being a Middle Grade book, but a real page turner, I was deeply immersed in Addie's story. And yes, I cried again!

The central premise of a neurodivergent narrator is appealing, but the style is based on "telling" rather than "showing" and the story never lifted off the page for me.
