The Terror : Civil War in the French Revolution Hardcover – May 1, 2005
The story of the Terror is a story of grand political pronouncements, uprisings and insurrections, but also a story of survival against hunger, persecution and bewildering ideological demands, a story of how a state, even with the noblest of intentions, can turn on its people and almost crush them.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018Though the dust jacket states the book is for a general readership, it was not an easy read. However, it was due largely to the enormously complex chain of events the author covered between 1791 and the moment Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself emperor. I found it difficult to keep track of the sheer number of participants the author covered in his book constantly referring to his cast of characters at the end of the book. The author did not simply relate the actions of a particular individual in the events of the Terror. He provided the reasons and thinking of that individual as best the reasons and thinking can be known. On a side note, even though murders, assassinations and executions abound, there is very little description of gore in this book. Perhaps the most frightening passage of the book appears in the conclusion of the author's introduction.
