JA Andrews is a writer, wife, mother, and unemployed rocket scientist. She doesn't regret the rocket science degree, but finds it generally inapplicable in daily life. Except for the rare occurrence of her being able to definitively state, "That's not rocket science." She does, however, love the stars.

She began writing stories and creating coloring books because these sorts of things need an outlet. And now good markers are a deductible business expense.

She spends an inordinate amount of time at home, with her family, who she adores, and lives deep in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, where she can see more stars than she ever imagined.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

This book is a tale of quests. The main character, Alaric, a Keeper, is on a long-lived quest to save the woman he loves. His world is filled with creatures of all forms who are traveling on their own quest, including a hidden quest by a hidden figure.
The characters are likeable and well developed. The world is alive with forests, greens, color, and lack of color. It is frightening and beautiful. Andrews’ descriptions are impressive. One reason I loved this book so much was the descriptions the author used. But there is so much more. The journey is interesting, exciting, challenging and dangerous. The question is, are the travelers up to the challenge.

While all the elements of an epic fairy tale exist within the pages of this book, and the quests are not unusual, the way Andrews puts it all together, the development of the story, the characters themselves, the twists and turns are all hers. The writing is excellent and keeps the story going.

Alaric is searching for an antidote to cure his wife of an incurable snake bite. He encounters a group of travelers heading in the same direction and they join together as they move on, each with their own reason for the journey. The group consists of Ayda, an elf; Brandson, a blacksmith; Milly, a human; Gustav, a wizard; and Douglan a dwarf. Each character is unique and has their own way of adding safety and help to the group. While safety may lie in numbers, trust is the key. And trust has to be earned. As the group try to determine who is to be trusted and who is not there is one catastrophe after another, and trust is tossed around like a Mexican jumping bean.

Everyone has someone they trust as well as someone they do not. But the group is adhesive as they fight danger together and overcome obstacles until one member betrays them all, leaving them to die.

This book is a delightful read and fantasy lovers should thoroughly enjoy it. I certainly did and I look forward to reading the sequel.

A Threat of Shadows by JA Andrews is a book that aches with hope and redemption wrapped in a classic fantasy setting. I’m not sure if I can find words that describe this novel better than classic fun. As I was reading it I was often put in mind of Dragonlance and other classic fantasy from the 80s.

There is a lot to enjoy in this novel from Andrews, especially if you are a fan of classic, hopeful fantasy. The main character, Alaric, is a take on the classic brooding hero archetype. But whereas that archetype is typically a strong, dark, handsome warrior, in A Threat of Shadows the brooding hero is a scholar. It’s a twist on the classic trope that puts things into a different perspective and adds the hint of freshness. It certainly isn’t an entirely unique take, but it isn’t trying to be. It’s a fun take on a classic hero, and Andrews seasons it with a tragic backstory that, while being deeply emotional, doesn’t cross the line into melodrama. This is a story that is about the character of Alaric. While there are epic and important events that he participates in, the novel itself is his story from the inciting incident to the denouement. I tend to really enjoy character stories, and this aspect of Andrews’ novel connected with me. I should also mention that there are some cool character portraits scattered throughout the book that I enjoyed.

No novel is without weaknesses, however. For me, one of the largest is that while Alaric is incredibly well drawn, the side characters largely fell flat for me. I didn’t feel like I entirely understood their motivations. I also would have liked to have seen more depth to the setting. There are some interesting tidbits we receive throughout the story, but the world felt a little vanilla in the end. Perhaps the biggest issue, for me, was that I felt the story overall lacked some tension and suspense. This was not because the writing was lacking in any way nor due to a lack of dramatic scenes but rather because I was able to predict any twists or reveals before they happened. I’m not quite sure if this was down to the foreshadowing being a little too blunt or some other reason. It did lessen the dramatic tension for me, however.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Threat of Shadows and if you’re looking for a hopeful fantasy in a classic vein you should give it a read. While I hope for more depth in future books, the themes of hope and identity and redemption in this one really scratch that itch for something less dark. 8/10
    Goodreads: 4/5 stars.

5 – I loved this, couldn’t put it down, move it to the top of your TBR pile
4 – I really enjoyed this, add it to the TBR pile
3 – It was ok, depending on your preferences it may be worth your time
2 – I didn’t like this book, it has significant flaws and I can’t recommend it
1 – I loathe this book with a most loathsome loathing

Alaric has spent years away from the Keepers, an order of benevolent historians and magic wielders, attempting to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem, and he's running out of time. The poison infecting his wife is slowly overcoming his magical safeguards, and if he can't figure out an antidote soon, she'll slip past the point of no return...if she hasn't already. His only hope lies in an obscure memory of a Keeper from the past, but events are conspiring not just to keep him from saving his wife, but to resurrect an evil being long thought destroyed.

Great characters, a diverse cast, and a complicated hero you wanted to root for. Yes, he's done some questionable things, but his intentions were noble and his cause worthwhile. The world had a rich lore that left me hungry for further exploration (luckily, this is a series!). The magic system was interesting, and tied in quite well with the overall direction of the book. Editing was well done. I only noticed one or two errors in the entire book, and it's a hefty story! Long, but it never drags. I was only ever sad to not be able to read more in one sitting than I did.

Overall, an extremely well-written and engaging fantasy novel. Light-hearted when necessary, heavy and dark when called for. A fantastic balance. Could not recommend this book more.

This was a great read - strong character development, world building, magic. Enough suspense to keep me hooked and a few surprises. There was also kindness, courage, and friendship - something I think we all need more of these days. Off to read Book Two!

5.0 out of 5 stars First ever novel?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 26, 2024
I can’t believe that! I was so surprised to read the closing note by the author at the end of this first instalment of the keeper chronicles. Her first ever novel. Wow.
I think this is such a strong first novel and I wholeheartedly recommend reading it.

This is a pure fantasy, epic in nature, following a band of makeshift friends who set out to save the world, by necessity more than choice. We have a dwarf, an elf, a magician and a keeper, along with a couple of strong hearted humans.

Is the book troupey? Maybe a little but the character development is beautiful and unique enough to distract from that. Whilst the story may not be entirely unique, the writing is lovely. The pacing good and there is a skillful humour woven through the book that is such a pleasure to read. Before I knew it I was so invested in these brave and flawed characters, particularly our elf who was shadowed and not at all what I was expecting.

The magic system is unique (in my opinion) and is explained so well that you almost feel it yourself as you read. I loved that, I love this magic system and I loved this book.

I laughed and I cried in equal measure, what a treat to feel so strongly about characters that you find yourself weeping for them at 2 o’clock in the morning.

If this was this authors debut, I cannot wait to read more. What a beautiful, burgeoning gift she is developing. I want to see how she grows if this is her starting point!

    Five stars all day long.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely enjoyable read

I couldn't help but be marveled at this epic fantasy by J.A. Andrews. It has the usual fantasy tropes like elves, dragons, spells and all those Tolkien-like goodness. But there's a twist to the story with the "energy of life" and the Keeper concept. The characters are relatable and very much alive. The words and messages hidden amongst the lines are thought-provoking and intelligent. World building is not heavy, but for a fantasy fanatic, it's easy to visualise and I think it's a good thing rather than bad. I've read novels which sketch out every details of the world, only to get bored by it.

Anyways, I'll not spoil the story. Just go ahead and start reading this tale, the adventure of Alaric, a man set out to save his wife, and a company of other people who are on search for the same stone he wants. But, well, they're not the only people seeking it...
