nice illustrations and got a good chuckle out of it; packaging of the books could've been better though

nice illustrations and got a good chuckle out of it; packaging of the books could've been better though
After reading the various reviews about the three artbooks, I decided to go with buying the first two artbooks. As some other reviews have already said, you can even see the brushstrokes of the illustrations in the book (I like to see that kind of detail and Arakawa's comments on her paintings made me laugh) and the afterword at the end of the book gave me a good chuckle. I knew the books were going to be tall, so I had set aside some space on my bookshelf for them and they're a little over an inch taller than the Nausicaa box set I have. The only problem I had was in the packaging of the books when they were delivered from Amazon as a corner of the book was squished as you can see from my photo (would've been great if they had padded around the books instead of tightly wrapping it in a cardboard like envelope package).

Huge fan of FMA. The best part of the book was the little snippets she includes about what she was doing while she was making a certain piece. Personally I wished it was more behind the scenes, like explaining her thoughts and her process when she was making the series, but it's an art book so can't expect much from there. Still a great addition to any collection.

I got this as a gift for my weaboo of a girlfriend. The footnotes turn an otherwise shallow page flipping experience into a nice insightful look at the artist's thought process. Print quality is nice, and it's great that it's a hardcover with a nice finish on the cover. If you or someone you know like FMA, this book is an easy recommendation.

Bought as a gift set for my sister who is a big fan, she loved it very much

Should you buy these "art of FMA" books? Is it worth the money? Well, I was wondering the same thing. I bought the following 3 books:

1. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist
2. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2, and
3. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Anime

They're all the same publisher and size and look nice together on the shelf. The contents, as everyone here has noted, are 99.99% full color illustrations. However, for items 1 and 2, you also get small footnotes from Hiromu Arakawa. Her comments are very brief but revealing. I felt I learned something about what it's like to be a manga author after reading about her feelings about each piece. If you are a fan, an artist, or considering becoming a manga writer, you should read it! Item 2 has a hilarious afterword by her in the form of a comic strip. For Item 3, there is an interview with Yoshiyuki Ito, the character designer for the anime (which Arakawa worked on only minimally). Personally, I much prefer Arakawa's comments, she is just such a character! What must it be like to create the world's most loved boy and robot? She must be on cloud nine. Roll over, JK Rowling. I'd rather be Arakawa any day! Ahem. End of review.

In this book, Arawaka shows some beautiful illustrations from magazine spreads, book covers, and even a few sketches from PS2 game! Honestly, this book is a necessity for any FMA fan.

It's got scratches on the top. I'm unhappy that I paid full price for a damaged item, it should have been discounted.
